He began his talk with a story about a man who gave $50 - $75 to a few different organizations throughout the year and throughout his lifetime. When he died his attorney was the executor of his estate and was instructed to give donations to a variety of organizations in the sum of $250,000 each. The attorney shared with Dick how wonderful it was to be giving away money that built wings on hospitals and additions to schools. He also shared with Dick what a shame it was that the gentlemen who had died didn't have the pleasure of doing this while he was alive. This story impacted Dick to the point where he decided that he would give his money away while he was alive and could enjoy the growth and opportunity that it gave to others in need. He began by giving a gift with one stipulation: that the organization receiving it had to have every board member make a donation in that same fiscal year and that they had to raise the exact amount of the gift. He was pleased to know a year later that not only did every board member make a donation, but they exceeded the amount of the gift. He went on to donate challenge gifts to various organizations including Goucher College in Maryland and the ALS Foundation. In addition to giving philanthropic gifts he was an active board member and helped open an ALS branch in San Francisco. Dick has personally helped raise more than $15,000,000 dollars in charitable contributions and ended his talk by sharing: "shrouds don't have pockets and funeral precessions don't have moving trucks.
3 Give while you're alive and enjoy seeing your investment grow." Anita Stangl won the raffle prize of a bottle of Malbec. Newly-wed Ehlan Siddiqi and his parents. Mr. Siddiqi is the former District Governor of District 3280, Bangladesh THE ROTARY CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO HAS A NEW HOME The Club's weekly Tuesday lunch meetings will move to the Hotel Monaco, effective August 31. The hotel is located one block south of our current meeting space at the Olympic Club. The Hotel Monaco can be entered through the Grand Cafà at the corner of Geary and Taylor streets or the main entrance in the middle of the block on Geary. The regular meeting space will be the Paris Ballroom off the main lobby. Members can gather in the lounge outside the Paris Ballroom before the meeting, and a bar will be set up to serve drinks in the ballroom. Small meeting spaces are available for committee meetings before and after the lunch meeting. A book of five lunch tickets can be purchased for $150; single lunch tickets will be $35. Valet parking will be available for $5 for two hours. SF2 SUPPORTS DINING FOR SMILES
4 Alliance for Smiles is a partner organization of SF2. As a way to raise funds to support cleft palate surgeries, the Alliance for Smiles volunteers host 'Dining for Smiles' dinners across the United States. SF2 Rotarians attended the event hosted at Chef David McElroy's home. The meal consisted of 5 courses with wine pairings and was fabulous. The particular event will help fund the mission to Manila in the Philippines, home to Rotarians, Michelle Valeriano and Alex Wong. Michelle Valeriano's fiance, Steve and Michelle Tina Holcroft, Rotary President-elect of her club in Georgia, Theresa Nicoletto, Carol Christie and Theresa's fiance, Sasha Froyland
