Prusiner, M.D., is Director of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Professor of Neurology and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco where he has worked since He received his undergraduate and medical training at the University of Pennsylvania and his postgraduate clinical training at UCSF. From , he served in the U.S. Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health. Editor of 12 books and author of over 350 research articles, Dr. Prusiner's contributions to scientific research are internationally recognized. Tim on harmonica and Steve Ruben on piano accompanied the Rotary Singers, leading the singing of What a Wonderful World. Carrie Condran LaBriola offered the Word of the Day - Integrity, meaning honesty, truthfulness, sincerity, and fairness. She related it to the first two steps in the Rotary Four Way Test: Is it the truth and is it fair to all concerned? Several guests, including some potential members, were introduced and Kent Borowick welcomed the three visiting Rotarians, including one from Osaka, Japan. A long series of event announcements began when Treasurer Eric Ball reminded members that dues for the second quarter are payable on October 1st and will be automatically charged to a credit card for those who are signed up on the website. Barrett Giorgis announced that the October Division will be hosting the Mount Sutro Work Day on October 3rd. San Francisco Rotaract Club Treasure and member of the District 5150 Rotaract Board, Jack Olson, announced a fundraising Chili Cook-off on December 6th. Jean Schore announced that October 1st is the application deadline for the Group Study exchange to Venice, Italy. Carol Christie reminded members that it is not too late to sign up for the Blue Angels Cruise on October 11th. The December Division, according to Cochair Ellie Giorgis, has a breakfast meeting tomorrow, the 23 rd. John Ringgenberg reminded members about the District 5150 fundraising event for The Rotary Foundation at the Bay Model in Sausalito on October the 18th and encouraged buying and selling raffle tickets for the event. Kevin Waldeck announced that the next regular Rotary Twilight Golf outing will be October 7th at the Presidio Golf Club and the Final Round is scheduled for October 16th at the Richmond Country Club. Cecile Chiquette encouraged members to attend the lunch meeting sponsored by the Greater Mission Club at El Valenciano Restaurant on September 30th. Continuing the marathon, Greg Gutting announced that he is performing in Rivets: A Musical Celebration of Rosie the Riveter & the Homefront Soldiers of WWII; final performances are September 25 th through the 27th. Finally, Jim Murray encouraged members to help recruit students for the 25 th annual CampEnterprise which will take place from November 6 th through the 8 th. Tim Hornbecker thanked Stephanie Deerkoski and Stacey Poole for organizing the successful New Members and Division Chairs event at The Carlisle on September the 17th. ine La Dow donated in recognition of all the volunteers at the successful Bike Build event on September 12th. 3 cats that appeared in the Peninsula Humane Society newsletter. Tim Hornbecker urged members to attend the District Foundation event on October the 18th and asked that raffle tickets be returned by the 12th (the 6th for the Early Bird Drawing). He reminded members that the goal is a $150 donation from "Every Rotarian Every Year" to The Rotary Foundation. The annual Super Bowl Pool will be another opportunity to donate. Loren Lopin introduced John Buchanan, Director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which comprise the de Young Museum and the CaliforniaPalace of the Legion of Honor. John said the museums have 2.5 million visitors a year and the current Tutankhamun exhibit at the de Young, which runs through March 28th, has created "Tut mania." John said the Tut exhibit contains 130 works of art, including things never seen outside Egypt. He thanked Wells Fargo for underwriting the Monday museum visits for school children. With 98,000 households as members, the Fine Arts Museums have the third largest membership in the country, after the MetropolitanMuseum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. As a preview, John said that, when Tut ends, the museums will host two back-toback exhibits from the Musee d'orsay in Paris, which is closing for renovation: Birth of Impressionism, May 22 nd through September the 6 th of 2010; and Van Gogh Gauguin, Cezanne & Beyond, September 25, 2010 through January 16, ine La Dow won the raffle prize, a sail on the Bay with Ed Gallagher. Loren Lopin announced that next week's speaker will be Leah Shahum, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. SF2 VISITS THE GREATER MISSION ROATRY CLUB The San Francisco Greater Mission Rotary Club in conjunction with The Centro Latino de San Francisco hosted San Francisco Rotary2 at this month's professional and people's luncheon. 14 Rotarians from San Francisco attended the event.
