1 LINK SUMMER 2017 FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Dear Friends and Colleagues, Alumni, community supporters, and friends of Leadership New Mexico joined to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at the 2017 Annual Dinner! This year we honored John Hummer, Core Class of 2004, Co-Founder and President of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, and Dale R. Dekker, Founding Principal and Architect of, with the Distinguished Leadership Award. The 11th Annual Golf Tournament was held the next day, Saturday, May 6, at Sandia Golf Club. JAMES M. Photographs of both events can be seen on the Events page on our website or on our Facebook page. Leadership New Mexico s programs have concluded for the year! The fifteenth Local Government Leadership Program class graduated at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in in April. The twenty-first Core Program class had their final sessions, the Environment and Natural Resources Session in Farmington in May, and completed the program year with the Government, Crime and Justice, and Leadership Session in Taos in June. The class graduated at the Taos Ski Valley with friends and family. Congratulations 2017 Graduates! My duties as Chairman of the Board end in July. As the year closes at Leadership New Mexico, we are planning next year s programs which begin in September. It has been an honor to serve as Chairman of the Board of this great organization. I look forward to continued participation as a board member, alumnus, and Lifetime Member in the years to come. I would like to extend an invitation to all Leadership New Mexico graduates to stay connected by joining the alumni program, if you haven t already done so, or by volunteering to serve on a committee. Russell Williams has taken the position of Performance Manager at Entergy in Jackson, Mississippi Steve Cowne has taken the position of Chief Nuclear Officer and Compliance Manager at URENCO USA CORE PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS CELEBRATE GRADUATION IN TAOS The final two sessions of the Core Program were held in Farmington on May and in Taos on June 7-9. The Environment and Natural Resources Session in Farmington began with a tour of San Juan Generating Station, followed by a community reception at Artifacts Gallery and dinner at the Farmington Museum. Participants heard from expert speakers about challenges and opportunities surrounding environment and natural resources in New Mexico. While in Farmington, the class also visited the Farmington Public Library, Merrion Oil & Gas, San Juan College - BP School of Energy, and rafted the Animas River. As is tradition, the Core Program class began their final session with a river rafting trip on the Rio Grande! The fun continued that evening with dinner and a community reception at Peoples Bank. This session s topics focused on government, crime and justice, and leadership. Participants visited locations around Taos including: FaraHNHeight Fine Art, New Mexico National Guard, and Taos Municipal Schools. Phil Bryson, On the Edge Productions, closed the program year with group interaction and team building. The graduation ceremony for the 34 members of the Core Program Class was on Friday, June 9. The class shared this celebration with their spouses and special guests who joined them for the ceremony at Taos Ski Valley. We would like to thank the Core Curriculum Committee members for dedicating many hours of volunteer time to make this another successful year for the Core Program participants. We appreciate this hard-working group of alumni! It was a wonderful evening with approximately 350 alumni, community members, supporters of the award recipients, and friends of Leadership New Mexico in attendance. During the reception, classes reunited, guests enjoyed music from the group Mariachi Nuevo Sonido, and everyone had fun taking photos at the Pink Mustache Photo Booth. The Local Government Leadership Program Class of 2017 had their final session on April 5-7 in. Topics and issues covered in the session were oil and gas, water, land, renewable and clean energy, cultural affairs, immigration, the court system, corrections, and children, youth and families in New Mexico. Phil Bryson of On the Edge Productions conducted group interactions and team building exercises for the class. The participants toured or visited the International Balloon Museum, the Publishing Company, the Canyon Club, and Isotopes Park. Finishing up the program year, the class celebrated their graduation at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History. Since 2004, Leadership New Mexico has partnered with the New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC), the New Mexico Municipal League (NMML), and the New Mexico School Board Association (NMSBA) to conduct this program.
