Honoring education and philanthropy leaders in the region, Pioneers & Purpose has raised over $11 million for STEM education initiatives impacting thousands of public school students and teachers across the Valley. These initiatives help underserved youth get back on track for college and career success. [ABOUT SVEF] Silicon Valley Education Foundation is a leading advocate for public education in Silicon Valley, California s sixth largest school system with over 370,000 students and 18,000 teachers. SVEF focuses on the critical need for improvements in STEM education by leveraging resources and partnerships so all students can realize their full potential. Over 70% of rising high school seniors in California are not proficient in math and only 16% of our graduating high school seniors are proficient in math and interested in STEM careers. These statistics are even lower among minority populations. Through advocacy, direct service programs, and resources for innovation, SVEF works to transform Silicon Valley into a model for enhancing public education. SVEF s goal is to make Silicon Valley the number one region in California for students graduating from high school academically prepared for postsecondary success. 2

3 [2017 Pioneer Business Leader] Steve Luczo is the CEO and Chairman of Seagate Technology. Seagate is a $14 billion global manufacturing and technology company with 45,000 employees and global operations in 35 countries. Originally from Chicago, Steve first came to the Silicon Valley to attend Stanford University, where he studied Psychology and Economics as an undergraduate. He continued on and graduated from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In addition to leading Seagate Technology, Steve has since served on the boards of directors of Microsoft Corporation, Veritas Software, and VMware. Steve has also served on the Advisory Boards of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is currently a Senior Advisor to the Silicon Valley Japan Platform. Steve has a history of being very active in charitable and for-profit ventures, including through his own company, Balance Vector, Inc. Steve is a patron of Stanford University and Hospital, and the World Wildlife Fund, where he is a member of the board of directors. His charity initiatives are focused on global environmental issues and programs that help at-risk children in the urban centers of the United States and the rural areas of Sicily. Steve is especially passionate about equal access to quality education for children. Steve is a member of the SVEF Advisory Board. [ADVOCACY] [PROGRAMS] [INNOVATION] Through policy papers, education forums and collaboration with district leaders, SVEF works directly with school districts to reform policies that are holding students back from achieving their full potential. Through SVEF s advocacy efforts, seven of the eleven Santa Clara County high school districts have adopted an A-G default curriculum for all students. The A-G curriculum consists of 15 course requirements that prepare students for college success. These seven districts represent 60,000 - or 74% - of the 81,000 high school students in the County. In 2014, SVEF formally established the East Side Alliance (ESA), which aims to create a seamless K-16 pathway for over 85,000 students and more than 4,000 educators across the eight school districts in San Jose s East Side. SVEF delivers innovative programs that impact students directly to ensure they stay on track for high school graduation and college success. Elevate [Math], prepares targeted students for success in their next level math course. SVEF conducts 30 hours of professional development for participating teachers to build the capacity of our school districts. Since 2008, Elevate [Math] has put more than 12,000 underserved students back on track and provided Common Core aligned professional development to more than 600 teachers. The 49ers STEM Leadership Institute (SLI), funded by the 49ers Foundation and Chevron, is a six-year program, that takes academically talented and underresourced students and prepares research, impactful community projects, and entrepreneurial future leaders in the areas of STEM. SVEF, in partnership with the business and tech communities, SVEF brings innovative education technology into the classroom, ensuring that students are gaining the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century economy. SVEF s Learning Innovation Hub (ihub) is working nationally to research EdTech and lead EdTech effectiveness and implementation. ihub is in its sixth round of pilot testing with 100+ teachers using 30+ EdTech products in Silicon Valley classrooms, and with WestEd, evaluates effectiveness in participating districts. In addition, ihub s partnership with Code.org enhances STEM education by increasing access to computer science for Silicon Valley students. SVEF has teamed with PwC and school districts to conduct 27 EdTech Assessments in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. 5
