2 Promote. Connect will be a big year for the Munich Sister City Association as it celebrates the 25 th anniversary of the establishment of the relationship between Cincinnati and Munich. The Association has as its mission to promote exchanges between Munich, the capital of Bavaria and Cincinnati on many levels, notably with universities, municipal services, students, businesses, venture capital firms, and other cultural and civic entities. We will mark this event with an informative and festive meeting in Munich June 30th July 3 rd The festivities also include delegations from Bordeaux and Edinburgh which simultaneously celebrate their 50th and 60th sister city anniversary with Munich, respectively. Cincinnati City Hall, the Cincinnati Convention Bureau, the Port Authority, the University of Cincinnati, the Chambers, business and civic leaders will be encouraged to attend. Many people from Cincinnati have expressed an interest already. We are soliciting your support of the Association to: Join us and participate in the 25 th anniversary celebration and in particular the 2 day business networking program on July 2 nd and 3 rd. We will take this opportunity to showcase our city in front of prominent Munich political, university, and business leaders. Our goal is to arrange for you to meet with the best of the best, in your area of expertise that Munich has to offer. We will be hosting a reception on the evening of July 3 rd with Mayor Cranley of Cincinnati and will be displaying the best of the best that Cincinnati has to offer. Secondly, we kindly ask for your donation for this event to enable us to provide an ongoing facilitation of your business interests in Munich and the channeling of business opportunities to you here in Cincinnati. Munich and the State of Bavaria have a population of 13 million and nominal GDP of 466 Billion Euros (600 Billion US) and are the home of some of Europe s largest companies. We also want to create a program that will allow interns from Cincinnati to work at companies in Bavaria and invite German interns to come to work in companies here. Activities like internship programs and other exchanges contribute to a vibrant Munich-Cincinnati relationship. You are an important member of the community, no effort of this magnitude and international scope, in our opinion, would be a success without your kind support. We will be contacting you, in due course, to see if we could meet to discuss assisting us in our effort to promote Cincinnati businesses abroad. 3 EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES As the capital of Bavaria, Munich has been an important city in Germany for centuries. While it is an important business center, it also has a reputation in the field of education and research, a lively arts community and it is well known for entertainment. Since Cincinnati has a strong German heritage, Munich s culture and daily life feels familiar. Most Germans speak English well, so language is not an issue. That s why Munich was considered a great city to partner with Cincinnati and after 30 years of discussion (and outdoing other contenders like Chicago and Denver), a sister city agreement between the City of Cincinnati and the City of Munich was signed in 1989 by the mayors of both cities. This has been the foundation for many fruitful individual connections, agreements between universities, numerous cultural exchanges and several new businesses. The Program. Our organization focuses on developing connections. Whether your interest is to develop a relationship with like-minded professionals or establish new business connections or just make new friends our organization will work with you. The high school exchange program is an eye-opening experience that introduces young people to a wide range of international opportunities. The university exchange provides the foundation for students and professors to interact and the collaboration with businesses provides internships for hands-on learning experiences. This is invaluable in today s global economy, as the presence of international experience on a résumé places applicants ahead of those without. The Sister City relationship with Munich was instrumental in getting the first Hofbräuhaus in America here in the Cincinnati region. We were also able to open a Hofbräuhaus in Pittsburgh, and are currently in development for a Hofbräuhaus in Columbus. Eric Haas, Hofbräuhaus Managing Member Two interns from Munich in Cincinnati

4 The 25 th Anniversary Schedule for Munich June 30 and July 1, 2014 with Bordeaux (50 th ) and Edinburgh (60 th ) Arrival Sunday June 29 th, 2014 Delegation Hotels: Carat Hotel & Bayerischer Hof Monday June 30, AM to 12:30: Conference in the City Hall with simultaneous translators The mayor from each city introduces his city for 20 Minutes: - Organization, politics and administration of the City - Current projects & problems - Group discussion 1:00 PM to 2:30: Lunch 2:30 to 4:00: Tour of the City Return to the Hotel 7:00 to 10:00: Get-together in the Villa Stuck with bilateral discussions Tuesday July 1, 2014 Morning: Tour of a City Facility Suggested themes: Culture, Environmental Protection and Public Transportation or individual requests Late morning: Excursion into the alpine region or further Professional discussions Lunch: During the excursion Evening: Celebration in the Old Rathaus and followed by a reception in the foyer with programs from Cincinnati, Bordeaux and Edinburgh. Wednesday July 2 and Thursday July 3, 2014 Business meetings on these 2 days as requested by each company A reception by Mayor Cranley from 5-7 pm on July 3, 2014 in the Munich Ratskeller. UC will have meetings with LMU and TUM Funding: There is a long legacy of interaction between Munich and Cincinnati with many mutual educational and economic benefits. Highlights of this friendship as remembered by Ute Päpke, one of the association s founding members and current Vice President, are: 1. In 1987 Lord Mayor Georg Kronawitter visited for the first time. 2. In 1992 was the first Big Show in Munich. The Munich Sister City Committee took 52 students from the School for Creative and Performing Arts to perform at Gasteig, Photos by Connie Sullivan and 25 Quilts were shown in the Amerikahaus; concurrently there was a large display for businesses and a show in the Kassenhalle, entitled Cincinnati Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, designed and built by Hans J. Päpke.

5 3. Other notable activities: The Cincinnati Park Board and the Gartenbauamt in Munich have a longtime active relationship which has left its marks in the parks in both cities. (e.g the AirCastle in the Theodore M Berry International Friendship Park in Cincinnati). Every year the Cincinnati Mayor invites the Lord Mayor of Munich to our Oktoberfest. Since both start on the same day, Munich is represented by a member of its City Council. In the 80 s the Alte Pinakothek [a Munich Art Museum] sent an incredible art collection to the Art Museum in Cincinnati which included paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, etc.. The Cincinnati Mayors have provided companies in Munich with appropriate contacts and have enticed German companies to come to the Tri-State. The Universities, the City of Cincinnati and its citizens, CSO, high schools, teachers, students, the Art Museum, and companies of all kinds have benefited from this partnership. Due to its energy and passion, the Munich Sister City Association succeeded in securing a section of the Berlin Wall for the Cincinnati Freedom Center. The biggest difference between most American Sister Cites and their German counterparts is that the German side is publicly funded, while in the United States those associations are almost always a group of passionate volunteers. The festivities of the 25th anniversary will celebrate those past achievements and will lay the foundation for many more events to come. However, the biggest difference between most American sister cities and their German counterparts, is that the German side is staffed and funded by the respective city, while in the United States those associations are run and funded by a group of passionate volunteers.
