1 Members Newsletter June 2018 President's Message It s been over half a year since I last wrote, not because we ve slowed down at the Association but, on the contrary, we ve all been busy with the year-end and spring festivities, as well as all sorts of engagement and service activities, as you may have been informed vide communications including our circulars. At the 2017 Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award (OWA) presentation on 28 Sept, Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR and officiating guest for the ceremony, stood firmly behind the power of women and encouraged us to press on with our dedicated, good work promoting not just professionalism and entrepreneurial spirit for the betterment of Hong Kong but also general womanhood and our unique resilience. As the saying goes, Nurture a woman and we would have nurtured a generation. Let s broaden and deepen the impact of our work continuously. To this end, I am pleased to let you know that we have started a platform to engage past OWA awardees to seek to synergise, where appropriate, between the Association and the OWA cohort. The first engagement dinner was held on 20 Mar when it was agreed that regular gatherings and suitable mentoring initiatives would be undertaken going forward. Please watch out for further news in this regard. Another highlight initiative that most of you should have heard about is our attempt to put together a Smart, Happy Families initiative to leverage the latest internet, AI and smart technologies to shape and promote more connected, communicative, happy families. Our partner in this is HKU s e-learning Centre and we are targeting thousands of students and families. Again, please stay tuned. On a broader note and looking at the community, much progress has been made, as you may be aware, by the current Administration to advance Hong Kong s economic development and education, as was pledged by the Chief Executive in her election manifesto. The stock market is poised to soar again given the acceptance of the Weighted Voting Right concept by the HKEx, among other things; the economy grew by a strong 4.7% in Q1 this year, following the upturn late last year. Relationship between the legislature and the executive government shows signs of improvement and more initiatives for the people are getting passed in LegCo faster than before. In terms of solving Hong Kong s biggest problem housing - however, no light is yet to be seen at the end of the tunnel. The Chief Executive appointed a Task Force on Land Supply last Sept comprising 22 members of the community and 8 senior government officials to seek to stage a community-wide engagement exercise to facilitate the shaping of consensus to secure adequate and timely supply of land for not only housing development but also to solve the shortage of economic-use land and community-use land for infrastructures such as roads, sewage, hospitals, elderly homes etc. The Task Force has launched a comprehensive, far-reaching education and engagement exercise in late April presenting for all in Hong Kong an important opportunity to work together to agree on how to solve this sticky issue for ourselves. It is time to drop the old objection-based engagement mode in which one keeps pointing out why there should not be any land shortage or why certain land supply options don t work. Instead, we have to, after grasping the essential information and data, choose and decide for ourselves the most acceptable options so there could be sustainable development for our next generations. I have to declare interest I am the Public Engagement Director for this land supply exercise but my dedication to the task and the cause goes far beyond my professional or business calling. I truly believe in what the Task Force is doing and would urge each and everyone of you, my friend and comrade, to lend this important initiative your best support. Sandra Mak President June

2 Recent Events Consultation on Smart Hong Kong Task force Luncheon September 15, 2017 A lunch discussion was held on Sep 15 to address the public consultation on Smart City Blueprint for Hong Kong. There was a presentation by our member Dr. Winnie Tang. Our core members including Environmental Committee members attended the luncheon. Press Conference of the 2017 Outstanding Women Awards September 20, 2017 The Press Conference of the 2017 Outstanding Women Awards was held on 20 September, announcing winners of the Outstanding Women Professionals Award and the Outstanding Women Entrepreneurs Award. We are delighted to have Helen Meng and Karen Chan winning the OWA Professionals category, and Jane Lee, Pascale Fung & Judy Chan winning the Entrepreneurs category. Congratulations again to each every one of them! June

3 2017 InnoTech Expo Sep 24 - Oct 2, 2017 The 2017 InnoTech Expo was hosted by Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from Sep 24 to Oct 2, With full support from the China Ministry of Science and Technology, and various HKSAR government units, InnoTech Expo 2017 aimed to showcase technological advancement in China and foster strong innovative and entrepreneurial spirit in Hong Kong. Our association is proud for being a Collaborating Partner of the Expo and also acted as collaborating organisation of the Expert Forum. One of the sessions under the Expert Forum ( 專家論壇 ) on Sep 26 was 太空 360, featuring China s achievements in space science and technology. Female astronaut Wang Yaping ( 王亞平 ) was the keynote speaker. With help from our member Merlinda Ng, a VIP tour for HKWPEA members and family was organized on Oct 1 with 30 enrolments. VR games and interactive designs were highlights of the Expo. June

4 2017 AGM cum OWA Award Presentation Dinner September 28, 2017 Our Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award (OWA) is a triennial event to honor and celebrate the achievements of successful women in Hong Kong. The Award recognizes women who have made significant contribution to their professions, Hong Kong s business environment and the society. This year is the seventh time for our Association to organize this Award. The Award Presentation was successfully held on September 28 with over 200 guests, preceded by our Annual General Meeting at JW Marriott Hotel. We are very honoured to have, the Hon Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBM, GBS, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as our Guest of Honour, and the Director General of the Coordination Department of the LOCPG ( 中聯辦協調部部長 ) 沈冲 to attend our signature event. The 2017 OWA awardees, Helen Meng, Karen Chan, Jane Lee, Pascale Fung & Judy Chan shared their intriguing stories with the audience, offering insight into their beliefs and missions while they strive for excellence. We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the working committee and members for their dedication and support in making the entire presentation ceremony a magnificent and inspiring occasion. June

6 Leadership Training Programm - ipresent with Confidence Oct 28-29, 2017 Big thanks to Chew Yen Tan who delivered an entertaining and practical session on Oct for 8 F.6 students on building presentation skills and self-confidence. The workshops were fun and effective at the same time. Students found themselves progressing and were grateful to have a great teacher in leading them to a brighter path. A Dinner to Remember: Boxing for Future Nov 6, 2017 Social Enterprise Summit (SES) 2017 Nov 7-8, 2017 This year, the Social Enterprise Summit (SES) celebrated its 10 th anniversary and our association was one of the supporting organisations. The grand opening was held on Nov 7. Mrs. Carrie Lam was the honourable guest of the Opening Ceremony to kick off the 2-day international symposium at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. HKWPEA was the co-sponsor of the Dinner to Remember, held on Nov 6 with the theme Boxing for Future at Jumbo Kingdom. We aimed to connect our guests to fight for systemic changes in society. A performance was incorporated into the dinner function, a vivid example of the diversity and vitality of Hong Kong. June

7 Leadership Training Programme - China CITIC Bank International Company Visit Nov 29, 2017 A total of 60 students from various secondary schools attended the company visit to China CITIC Bank International at the Quarry Bay office. The group had a fun filled evening by going through the essentials of job interviews in interactive discussions. The participants found the programme interesting and useful in equipping them for job seeking and career preparation. Special thanks to Helen Kan s continuous support and arrangement of this training session for students. Leadership Training Programme - Image Grooming Dec 2, 2017 Apart from presentation skills and interviewing skills, image grooming is another important part for helping the youngsters to build up their self-confidence. The Image Grooming course was held on Dec 2 and coached by Ms Priscilla Chan, Founder and Director of P.C. Image Consulting. The programme covered grooming, dress code definitions, do s and don ts in dressing and ended with a Q&A session. The youngsters were very enthusiastic and willing to learn. June

8 4th Biz Meeting cum Christmas Party Dec 8, 2017 The HKWPEA Christmas Party has really become one of our signature events now. It was preceded by the 4th Business Meeting held on Dec 8 and the party was attended by around 75 members and guests at the Full Moon, Macau Jockey Club. This year, initiated by our Foodever Wastenever Programme, we celebrated in the theme Green X Bauhinia which our beautiful attendants embodied. We highly appreciate the efforts made by the organizing committee. The party had plenty of joyful moments and lots of laughter rang throughout the evening. Special thanks to those who sponsored prizes for the party. June

10 Governance Partners Yangon Gathering Jan 5, 2018 Governance Partners Yangon (GPY), a non-profit social venture, invited our association to a small gathering with a delegation of female political and professional leaders from Myanmar on 5 Jan 2018 at the China Club. The delegation consisted of around 10 members of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar, including Members of Parliament. GPY assisted with some of the arrangements of this visit. Our president, Sandra Mak attended the roundtable gathering. Dinner Talk with Social Enterprise & Services Committee Jan 18, 2018 A dinner talk featuring the Social Enterprise Subcommittee, led by Committee Co-chairs Salome See and Selina Cheng, was organized on Jan 18 at Lingnan Club. The dinner talk was entitled Lead the helping hand - Social Service Initiatives of HKWPEA. During the dinner, they shared worthwhile projects that the Association has undertaken in recent years. 47 attendants gathered at the Lingnan Club for the uplifting sharing. June

11 Golden Age Expo & Summit 2018 Jan 26-28, 2018 Our member Rebecca Choy, also Chairperson and Founder of the Golden Age Foundation, invited our members to the Golden Age Expo & Summit Opening on 26 January. The Golden Age Expo & Summit 2018 was held between January at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event has been highly recognized as a collaborative platform for leaders of all sectors to come together and develop Hong Kong into a Smart Ageing City. The Expo showcased innovative products, technology and services catering for Golden Agers, i.e., people aged above 45 who are into retirement. The Summit is a cross-sector and cross-generation platform with over 85 speakers from 10 countries, covering 30 sessions of plenary discussions and workshops. 17/18 Family-Friendly Employers Award Scheme 1st Organizing Committee Meeting Feb 8, 2018 HKPWEA has continued to be one of the supporting organizations of the Family-Friendly Employers Award Scheme. The First Organizing Committee Meeting of the 2017/18 Family-Friendly Employers Award Scheme was held on 8 Feb at Pico Tower and was attended by Angela To. June

12 Hong Kong Shared Good Values Case Competition 2018 Apr 22, 2018 The Hong Kong Shared Good Values Case Competition aims to inspire young people to become innovative future leaders who are aware of and embrace shared values. Through the promotion within campus and other media channels, the competition invites college students and working youth to submit proposals aligned with selected companies core business ventures after an intense mentorship session. HKWPEA is pleased to be one of the supporting organisations of this competition. Angela To, Yuen Mei Chow and Deborah Wan attended the opening ceremony held at the City University on Feb 24. Yuen Mei and Deborah also provided mentorship for competing groups, which both won places in the Grand Final on Apr 22. Women s Commission, Reception to celebrate Intl Women s Day 2018 Mar 8, 2018 The Women s Commission hosted a reception to celebrate International Women s Day on Mar 8 at the Central Government Offices. The ceremony was officiated by Mrs. Carrie Lam, and attended by representatives from local women s groups, non-governmental organisations, the business sector and the WoC s Gender Focal Point Network. Sandra Mak and Marina Wong represented our association to attend this function. June

13 Leadership Training Programme - Company Visit to HKT Mar 15, 2018 Around 30 students paid a visit to HKT on Mar 15 at the Lai Chi Kok Centre. They were readily absorbed in the advanced facilities and innovative technologies of the enterprise. The session offered a rare opportunity for the students to understand about HKT services and functions of their network operation center with live demo. OWA Awardees Reunion Dinner Mar 20, 2018 The OWA Alumni Committee was set up with co-chairpersons Caroline Mak and Grace Tse, supported by Marina Wong and Angel Hon. The Committee serves to create a platform for OWA Awardees to connect with one another and with HKWPEA. The first OWA Awardees Reunion Dinner was held on Mar 20 at Viola Ho s social enterprise restaurant Shou Zen in Sheung Wan. Profit from the restaurant s operation goes to children in need of speech therapy. Many awardees stayed for dinner, including Magdalena Wong, Ella Cheong, Sandy Yip, Vivienne Tam, Karen Chan, Jane Lee, Rosie Yeung, Augusta Cheung, Deborah Wan and Polly Cheung. International Women s Day Reception by HK Federation of Women Mar 21, 2018 The HK Federation of Women hosted a wine reception celebrating Int l Women s Day at the Government House on 21 March, with the Association as a committee member. Our Vice President, Helen Kan represented HKWPEA to support the event, along with Agnes Koon. June

14 5th Biz Meeting cum Spring Dinner Mar 23, 2018 The 5th Business Meeting cum Spring Dinner was successfully held on 23 March at the Full Moon, Macau Jockey Club. As our association was working on the project Smart Happy Families, the project convenor, Dr. Amanda Lim, took the opportunity and briefed us on the progress of the project proposal preparation. Everyone dressed up in Chinese-style to celebrate the Year of the Dog and enjoyed a festive evening with fellow HKWPEA buddies. We are thankful to the Fellowship committee and all the generous sponsors for making the event extra enjoyable. 香港各界婦女社團領袖餐敘 Mar 27, 2018 Louisa Lui and Helen Kan represented our association to attend the 香港各界婦女社團領袖餐敘 on Mar 27 at the LOCPG office. 仇鴻副主任 hosted the event. She delivered a speech where she acknowledged the contributions by various women associations in HK and encouraged all of us to understand and contribute to the big picture of China s developments. 15 Antique Galleries Hollywood Road Apr 14, 2018 An antique galleries tour was held on Apr 14 at Hollywood Road. We were happy to have experts from the Hong Kong Antique and Art Galleries Association to accompany us in the exploration. Rosewood expert Andy Hei, co-founder of Fine Art Asia, led the tour along Hollywood Road, where his store is located. Participants had a wonderful time walking through history by appreciating the beautiful artworks. June

16 Upcoming Events June 27, th Biz Meeting cum Dinner Talk Venue: Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Club New Members Viola Ho 何淑英 Viola Ho is the owner and Managing Director of social enterprise Confiserie Benji Ltd., and also Zen International Ltd. HK. Previously, she had been the President of C.E. Tour Inc. in Toronto. On community service, Viola co-founded Benji s Centre from 2004, a charitable organization providing speech therapy, now serving as its Executive Director. Viola won the Mulan Awards and Hong Kong Humanity Award in 2014, and also became an OWA awardee the same year. Natalie Chan 陳琦 Natalie Chan is the Managing Director of PIE Strategy Ltd. Before that, she had been the Director, Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability, at Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels (Peninsula). From 2006 to 2011, she served at Swire Pacific Group as the Manager, Corporate Responsibility. Earlier she also worked for SCMP and HKTDC. On community service, Natalie is a Corporate Relations Consultant at WWF Hong Kong, a member on the Advisory Board at Ethical Corp. UK, a nonexecutive Director at the HK Institute of Social Impact, and an Engagement Strategist at Crossroads Foundation. June

17 Members News / Achievements Carlotta Wong and Catherine Yau winning in the First Silk Road Women s Carlotta Wong and Catherine Yau participated in the 首屆絲路女性創新設計大獎 (The First Silk Road Women s Innovation Design Competition) held by 陝西省婦女聯合會. Carlotta and Catherine respectively won second prize under 綠色生活類 and third prize under 工業類. Congratulations to Carlotta & Catherine for winning the competition! June

18 Agnes Koon awarded the 2017 Outstanding Business Women Award 傑出商界女領袖 Huge congratulation to our past president Mrs. Agnes Koon. Agnes was an awardee of the 2017 Outstanding Business Women Award for her outstanding contribution in the development of Hong Kong Insurance Industry and her dedicated public & community service. A most well deserved recognition of Agnes. Bravo, Agnes. We are so proud of you.
