1 THE 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF HONG KONG SOCIETY FOR TRANSPORTATION STUDIES Sustainable Transportation The 11th International Conference of Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies (HKSTS), jointly organized by the HKSTS and the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Economics and Finance, School of Geography, and Research Group on Sustainable Cities at The University of Hong Kong, was successfully held from 9-11 December Generous financial sponsorships were received from Autotoll Limited, BALtrans Logistics (Hong Kong) Limited, New World First Ferry Services Limited, and Western Harbour Tunnel Company Limited. In addition, the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong, Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Civil Division) were non-financial sponsors of the event. Citizens have increasingly called for an efficient and effective transportation system that enhances economic growth while minimizing environmental degradation and climate change for both our present and future generations. A technically feasible transportation system that sustains itself is an integral part of any sustainable development strategy. Against this background, the theme of Sustainable Transportation was chosen for the Conference, to provide a forum for exchanging innovative thinking on transportation and the environment, the engineering system, the economy and society, all of which that we hope shall materially improve the welfare of both our children and grandchildren. The Conference received an overwhelming response from researchers the world over. Ninetytwo papers were presented by these authors, covering a broad array of topics spanning the planning, operation, management, and control of the gamut of transportation modal hierarchy. The conference attracted unprecedented interest, with more than a hundred and fifty delegates from over twenty countries participating, both academic and professional. Mr. Alan Wong Chi-kong, Commissioner for Transport of the HKSAR Government, delivered the Keynote Speech of Sustainable Transportation in Hong Kong, and Professor David Banister from the University of Oxford of UK flew from across the miles to deliver the Keynote Address on Sustainable Transport: Challenges and Opportunities. Further, two distinguished scholars, Professors Mei-Po Kwan from the Ohio State University of USA and Karl G. Høyer from the Oslo University College of Norway, presented two invited lectures Conceptualizing Socially Sustainable Urban Transport and Sustainable Mobility in European Transport Politics: The Role of Technology at the plenary session on the first day of the conference. For the workshop on the final day, we had six distinguished scholars, Professors Yasuo Asakura, Michael G.H. Bell, R. Jayakrishnan, Lawrence W. Lan, Seungjae Lee and S.C. Wirasinghe, who delivered stimulating presentations at a plenary session on Integrated Multimodal Transportation. Dr. Sarah Liao, the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works of the HKSAR Government, graced us with her presence as the Guest of Honor at the special Conference Banquet following the Closing Ceremony. She presented the HKSTS Outstanding Dissertation Paper Award cum Gordon Newell Memorial Prize to Dr. H.W. Ho from The University of Hong Kong for his winning paper Housing Allocation Problem in a Continuum Transportation System, and the HKSTS Outstanding Student Paper Award to

2 Mr. Simon Foo from the University of Toronto for his winning paper Evaluating the Impacts of Changeable Message Signs (CMS) on Traffic Diversion.
