4 PRESIDENT'S SPEECH It gives me great pleasure to be able to join you tonight at the ICES annual dinner 2015 of the Hong Kong Region. The last 12 months have been eventful for ICES. We currently have our highest ever membership figures; we have a strong regional events programme open to non-members and members; we are investigating new competencies in the fields of building information modelling (BIM) and GNSS machine control; we led the authorship of the new PAS 128 underground utility standard; we continue to lead Survey4BIM for the UK government s BIM Task Group; and we have strengthened links with the International Marine Contractors Association to further our support for hydrographic surveyors. Leading these highlights is the news that we have been given approval by the Engineering Council to put members forward for chartered engineer, incorporated engineer and engineering technician status. This is a crowning moment in the institution s history and has been achieved with the unparalleled support of the Institution of Civil Engineers. I would like to take this opportunity therefore to provide you with an insight into the strategic direction of the institution, how it has performed during the last year and how it intends to move forward. We are in the middle of the period covered by our strategic plan for , which aimed to build on the governance and business planning processes put in place following the award of our royal charter in So how have we performed? Elevating the status of the civil engineering surveyor is a key priority for the institution and towards the end of 2014, we received news from the Engineering Council that our members can apply to be registered as chartered engineers, incorporated engineers and engineering technicians. It is important that we manage expectations and carefully plan how this initiative will be rolled out to our members. Another key priority has been our emphasis on the importance of continuing professional development. Again the institution has not disappointed. Member volunteers have risen to this challenge and arranged and undertaken numerous events both at a regional and national level throughout the UK and overseas. In addition, we have been quick to recognise the importance of collaboration and now have strong links at a strategic level with key stakeholders and other professional bodies on an international scale. 5 events are commonplace. For example next week I will be travelling to Guangzhou to the launching ceremony of the BIM Centre of Excellent formed by ICES China & buildingsmart in China. Next Friday I will be presenting on BIM at an international construction conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organised in collaboration with the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), Persatuan Juruukur Tanah Bertauliah Malaysia (PEJUTA) and BK SURCO Training, the international training company of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors. Retaining you, our member, is very important, as is attracting new members worldwide. If we are able to increase our membership, we will be able to do a lot more to support you and the construction industry to the benefit of the public. We will be looking at ways in which this can be achieved, whilst not losing sight of the fact that our institution is recognised as the leading, most relevant and supportive professional body for civil engineering surveyors. We are determined that our members remain at the heart of everything we do and recognise that none of this would be achievable without your contribution and the tremendous support from our staff. Please be assured that the institution values your membership and we will endeavour to deliver a quality service at all times. 6 CHAIRLADY S SPEECH Miranda LUI Chairlady It is my great pleasure to welcome you here this evening to join the Annual Dinner of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors Hong Kong Region. I would like to wish all guests and members a very happy and healthy I m most grateful and honor to take over the Chairmanship from Sr. Michael Wong who has been making great progress of the past two years for the institution. It is our honor and great pleasure to have our Guest of Honor Mr. MA Siu-cheung, Eric, JP, Under Secretary for Development of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government in joining our ICES Annual Dinner tonight. This year Hong Kong Region also has full support from the HQ in the UK to join our event as well. We have our President Mr. Ian Bush and our CEO Mr. Bill Pryke in joining us. The President Mr. Ian Bush will bring us more good news on the status of the civil engineering surveyor to be registered as chartered engineers. In 2013, China Region was established by the leadership of Ir. Andrew Keung and myself to bring the structure of Hong Kong Region to Mainland China. In 2014, China Region has separated to become independent which to cope with the rapid growth of the economy especially in construction industry. In the past year, Andrew, myself and the Mainland Development team have been working terribly hard to setup new branches in various cities such as Macau, Beijing, Ningbo, Shanghai, Chongqing and Shenzhen. China is now the world s second biggest economy. Over the years the Chinese government has set a number of strategic emerging industries as the economic growth engines. There are golden opportunities for us to develop our career. China Region joint hand with building SMART Hong Kong to setup a BIM Centre of Excellent (CoE) in Mainland China with Hong Kong Region s support. In the coming two years, Hong Kong Region will continue to build valuable links as a spring board between Mainland China and overseas countries, by transferring and exchanging knowledge to achieve going out, bringing in development policy in Mainland China through professional activities, making our industry reaches international professional level 4 Annual Dinner 2015
