1 Overview, Audience & Background Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering The idea for a top 50 influential women in engineering list has come about over the past few months during discussions between the Telegraph, the Women's Engineering Society and their partners where there was seen to be a lack of a cohesive nationwide recognition for the achievements of women engineers. In light of this we are looking to run a Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering List. The list will be released on National Women in Engineering Day 2016 with an associated promotional campaign running January - June 2016, Intended as a way of celebrating and promoting the inspirational female leaders in engineering in the UK. Women in engineering are often not as visible as we would like them to be, however we have some fantastic stories to tell of the women who have made it to the top of the profession, and who are shaping and influencing the future. The women who have been selected form this inaugural list of influential women will be those who have made a significant contribution to the sector over the past 12 months, and who have used their influence to inspire others. The list looks to celebrate not only technically qualified women, but also those who are influential in the engineering sector who may not have a technical background. The list will be compiled of influential women who fall into the categories of Established Professionals, Early Career Professionals, and potentially category awards: Chemical/Biological Engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical engineering, Mechanical engineering. The Telegraph has long been a publication of choice in the engineering community and a go to for careers in the field. We are looking to put our resources and national reach into play as a natural partner for a project such as this. The aim of the list is to increase awareness and change male dominated stereotypes of engineers. Confronting perceptions of men in hard hats on construction sites and showcasing the diverse contributions and occupations which women engineers engage every day in Aerospace to Construction to Technology. "Girls in particular do not seem to think that engineering is a suitable career for them, despite their achievements in maths and science at school. It is very frustrating to be facing a shortage of engineering skills when so few women enter the profession. Only 7% of engineering professionals in the UK are female, and the proportion is even lower for engineering apprentices." (BBC - Why engineering should be a woman's game, 2015) The quote above highlights serious skill shortages which are already affecting the industry and typifies the poor uptake of skills by women. Through a collaboration with the Women s Engineering Society (WES), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Prospect Union, Matchtech, Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) and Harvey Nash, we have created a framework for a Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering campaign to bring attention to and publicise the great things which women routinely achieve within engineering to both recognise women currently in the profession and inspire a new generation of women into engineering. The campaign will be launched in January 2016, and nominations will be sought between January and March. Judging will take place in April by a panel of high profile judges, and the

2 winners will be announced on 23 June 2016 at a press launch, and invited to a celebration event taking place at the House of Commons on the same day. The list will be drawn from public nominations and a panel of judges will be selected from sponsors of the event. 3 Hub Mock-up A sponsored hub is hosted within the Telegraph site, likely along the lines of telegraph.co.uk/engineeringtop50. A mock-up of the hub can be seen below. Sponsors would receive digital inventory in locations highlighted in red. Sponsors would also receive video content options as highlighted which may include existing case studies of influential women or bespoke video content created by the Telegraph. A voting platform would also be facilitated through the site.

Editorial will be commissioned by our award winning team to write and collaborate with sponsors on inspiring women engineers in their networks.
