1 Members Newsletter Feb 2015 / Issue 1 President's Message Kung Hei Fat Choy! On the solid foundation laid by my predecessors, I ve struck out with my board with the continuous and tremendous support of our committees and members back in late Sept., We ve kept up all the good work steered by committees such as the Social Enterprise & Services Committee and the Environmental Committee, to which I take my hat off, while successfully expanding the network to include the new Cultural & Art Committee. Chaired by Kitty Poon and Yolanda Ng, the Cultural & Art Committee s first activity a talk by renowned art lover Catherine Kwai, Founder of Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery, also our member, on pop art set off our year of art and culture exploration very nicely and tastefully. We are all looking forward to the next activity which is a visit to the Jao Tsung-I Academy in Sham Shui Po. Do save the date once arrangement details are announced. I must also highlight the amazing X mas party organized by Fellowship chairs Catherine Yau and Cindy Chan. The lovely, festive décor and atmosphere, coupled with thoughtful games and the many, many dream gifts for the lucky draw made for a memorable evening of unparalleled fun, laughter and fellowship, of course! My heartfelt thanks to you ladies and all those who helped in the background including our colleagues at the Secretariat. Please buckle up for the Spring Dinner in Mar. Increasingly, since recent years, Hong Kong has been facing challenges at the political, economic and community levels. From what used to be a healthy balance of different voices in the territory, we now have extreme, sometimes even violent voices and forces seeking to effect change as they wish it. Many of the ordinary folks like myself struggle, though often in vain, to find peace and stability in this unique international city we call home. But what is stability? A US Public Policy guru Professor Jack Goldstone says it well - There is absolute, apparently sturdy stability in a pile of rocks stuck one on top of another, and there is relative, fluid stability as seen in a glass of water. Which one is more stable? If one piece of rock is knocked off the pile, the whole pile of rocks falls. If the water in a glass is rocked, surely waves would result but the water should settle eventually and stability and peace will return. It s the law of physics. I am for relative stability but we have to agree on and respect the framework (glass). Once that is achieved, we d have to allow waves to arise every so often. There must be room for maneuver in a metropolis like Hong Kong. Have a happy and healthy Year of the Ram. Sandra Mak President Issue 1-1

2 Recent Events 2014 Annual General Meeting cum Dinner 25 September AGM was held on 25 September 2014 at World Trade Centre Club Hong Kong. It was a wonderful success with strong turnout and zealous participation from a lot of members due to our A-list Guest of Honour, Mr. Vincent H.S. Lo, GBS, JP and his beloved wife whom we all know as the most beautiful Miss Hong Kong Loletta Chu. Vincent gave an interesting speech on 香港何去何從 Hong Kong: Where are you going to?, which stimulated very enthusiastic Q&A. Here are the memorable moments captured at the event. Issue 1-2

3 The Life Skills Education Programme (Renmed as Leadership Training Programme for Underpriviledged Youngsters) 28 September 2014 The Life Skills Education Programme had been successfully concluded. In the last program held in September, more than 30 participants paid a visit to Cathay City. An evaluation meeting would be held to discuss how the program might be continued next year. TWF Empowering Woman Entrepreneur Online Series Launch Event 28 Oct 2014 On behalf of the Women s Foundation, HKWPEA as the Supporting Partner of the Empowering Women Entrepreneur Online Series organized a launch event for Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Online Workshops supported by Google on 28 October The event was well attended by over 50 participants. Empowering Women Entrepreneurs Online Series organized by The Women s Foundation (TWF) and supported by Google was a series of events aiming to provide women entrepreneurs with practical and innovative tools, approaches, frameworks and a stronger network of industry women leaders and peers. The Series aimed to address the knowledge gaps and other business challenges that were impeding women business owners from scaling their businesses. The one hour launch event on Oct 28 featured a panel discussion exploring current challenges faced by women entrepreneurs and discussed ways in which women entrepreneurs in Hong Kong could collaborate to support women businesses. The launch also kick started sharing of online resources and technology tools, training, mentoring and networking initiatives available to women entrepreneurs. Special thanks to the guest speakers below who had shared their insights during the launch event. 4 The 2014 Social Enterprise Summit ( 社企民間高峰會 ) 3-4 November 2014 The 2014 Social Enterprise Summit ( 社企民間高峰會 ) took place from 3-4 November For the sixth year HKWPEA co-sponsored the Dinner to Remember event on the 3rd of November. HKWPEA continued to be actively involved in this signature yearly event on social enterprises. The Summit played a significant role in enhancing public awareness and understanding of the subject. In particular, it made special endeavour to promote cross-sector dialogue and partnerships. The Summit attracted increasing attention from overseas, especially in the Greater China region. Dialogue in Silence Dinner at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant HKWPEA hosted an opening dinner named Dialogue in Silence at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant on 3 November Our members attended and occupied 2 tables as a continuous support for this event. 5 Cultural & Art talk cum dinner 27 November 2014 The first artistic event was held on 27 November Catherine Kwai gave an enlightening talk on pop art as well as Chinese Contemporary Art at her gallery in Central. The topic was How Western Pop Art influences the Chinese Contemporary art, followed by a dinner at the Kiangsu Chekiang Restaurant. The silkscreen works by world-famous American pop artist Andy Warhol had inspired a lot of Chinese artists throughout the years. Ms. Catherine KWAI, founder of Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery, used Chinese pop artists Xue Song, Wang Guang Yi, Wei Guang Qing as examples to talk about the style and value of Pop Art by Chinese contemporary artists. The talk was well attended by about 30 attendees, including 6 guests. Members found the talk educational and eye-opening, and the Q&A session was lively and interactive, followed by dinner. Discussions and sharing continued there and everyone enjoyed a great artistic evening!! Issue 1-5

6 Christmas party December 2014 HKWPEA 2014 Christmas party was held at The China Club, Central with an exciting party theme, Our Good Days 我們的那些年! and some Chinese characteristics were involved this year. Dress code: Posh with a twist of red It was an unprecedented turnout this year and all ladies and gentlemen attended, fully enjoyed the annual party and had lots of laughter throughout the night. We were most honoured to have 中聯辦副主任殷曉靜, 廖勛部長, 宋瑋處長及張淑卿女士 as our guests of honour. Also Ms. Annie Wu, SBS, JP, HKWPEA s Honorary President joined our event. Special thanks to Catherine P H Yau, Cindy Chan and the organizing committee for creating such an amazing party which was filled with surprises and fun!! Issue 1-6

7 New members recruitment tea gathering 13 January 2015 Our Membership Committee had a tea gathering meeting with 8 potential members which was held at Chariot Club on 13 Jan The potential members on the photo last row were (from left to right) Dr Emmy Li, Linda Kang, Susie Cheung, Wendy Man and Wendy Tang. Two ladies who left early were Lisa Chow and Myra Chan. Upcoming Events Kadoorie Farm Visit at Tai Po 11 April 2015 This Farm visit event allows the participant to learn more about sustainable living, 40 people would be accommodated and guests would be welcomed on a 1+1 basis. Please sign up and don t miss out this meaningful outdoor visit. Spring Dinner at Lippo Chiuchow Restaurant 19 March 2015 All the members are encouraged to join this festive dinner gathering to catch up with your friends on the day. Issue 1-7

8 Members News / Achievements Our president, Mrs. Eva Cheng had made us all proud again. Firstly, she was conferred with an Hon Doctor Degree of Business Administration by the Open University of Hong Kong. Secondly, Eva was appointed by Mr. Tung Chee Hwa as the Executive Director of Our Hong Kong Foundation 團結香港基金會. The Foundation aims to advocate policies that are important to HK s long term sustainable development. The Foundation consists of 88 leaders of our society in the academia, business, professionals and other sectors. Dr. Janice Tsang, our Director and Co-Chair of the Public Affairs Subcommittee, was bestowed as one of the awardees for the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award This was a recognition to Janice s well-rounded contribution to breast cancer care and research in Hong Kong, being the Founding Convenor for the Hong Kong Breast Oncology Group (HKBOG) which is now the 3rd Asian Member just after Taiwan and Japan with the Breast International Group (BIG), on top of her community service and leadership in Women in Medicine and the Education Sector. Well done, Janice. New Members Tan Chew Yen 陳秋燕 Chew Yen is the Director of Kindle Learn Coach Worldwide Ltd., which is her own business since Before setting up her own business, Chew Yen was with Singapore Broadcasting 1980 to 1990, BBC Worldwide Asia in 1994 to Discovery Communication 2000 to 2002 and then ET Media China Ltd 2002 to Principle consultant of RogenSi 2007 to Chew Yen has ample of experiences in media communication as well as many charitable volunteer work e.g. Training Catholic priests and nuns in China, advisor to Loving Kids Community Service Co Ltd, and board member of the HK Chapter of the International Coaching Federation etc. Chew Yen in 2014 helped HKWPEA as a volunteer trainer providing NLP coaching to a group of underprivileged children. Kathy K L Chan 陳燕玲 Kathy is Associate VP (Alumni Relations) and Deputy Secretary-General of Foundation of City University of Hong Kong. She has been with City University for over 20 years on areas of student affairs, alumni relations and institutional advancement. Kathy is a registered social worker. Kathy has a lot of community services experience e.g. Federation of New Territories Youth as Hon Advisor, Fellow of Wofoo Social Enterprises, Member of Development Committee of Australian International School of Hong Kong etc. Issue 1-8
