1 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE KENTUCKIANA BLUES SOCIETY...PRESERVING, PROMOTING AND PERPETUATING THE BLUES. Louisville, Kentucky Incorporated 1989 June 2011 Photo courtesy of Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King On Saturday, June 18, Alligator recording artist Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King will be the headliner's for this years' Smokin' on the River BBQ, Blues & Brew Festival. Kubek and King have been performing together since 1989 when they first met at a Dallas, TX blues jam. They discovered that Kubek's hard-edged, hard rocking blues guitar fit well with King's jazzy and elegant rhythm guitar. The result is "genuine house rockin' blues that boogies til the break of day" according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The festival is free and takes place on the Riverstage in Jeffersonville, IN. The full schedule can be found in this issue of Blues News. 6 New Music Reviews! Jukebox Classic Davis Coen Soundview Productions When I picked up this CD, I thought I knew the name as an east coast blues guy I had heard before. When I looked at the list of performers on the cover, I discovered I had to be thinking of someone else. The names Jimbo Mathus and Kent Kimbrough tell me that the music is most likely from the hill country of Mississippi. Performers are Coen on guitar and vocals, Justin Showah on bass and percussion, Mathus on guitar and bass, Eric Carlton on keyboards and Kimbrough on drums. Coen has 6 other CD s previously released and has toured extensively, mostly as a solo acoustic and vocals act playing piedmont style blues, until the last couple of years when he has gravitated towards hill county blues.. He composed music for Martin Scorsese s movie, Blues and has played on Jesse Mae Hemphill s last recording. Sure enough, from the first song, it is identifiable as hill country blues. Of the 11 songs on the CD, all but 4 are Coen originals. The song Big Leg Woman is currently getting airplay on XM/Sirius radio, and is good, but in my opinion is not the best on the CD. By and By is my favorite, with the distinctive drumming, snarling slide guitar and rhythmic style that makes hill country blues almost a genre of its own. That is not to say that the other songs don t have this style- they do. Stranger in My Home is another standout that has a particularly appealing slide guitar solo. Coen s singing adds to the music as it is a distinctive, rough edged, but capable instrument in its own right. The band s performance is very good, and the recording is also first rate. Hill Country Blues Fans will appreciate this one. Song clips are available at Bob Brown riffs from time to time. Blues Intervention Marshall Lawrence Self-Produced Bluesman Marshall Lawrence serves up 10 originals on his 13-song new release of mostly pre-war country blues. These songs are in good hands as the Edmonton, Alberta artist displays nimble fretwork and clear, urgent vocals throughout. Joined by Russell Jackson on stand-up bass and Sherman "Tank" Doucette, who is heavily featured on blues harp, the "Doctor of the Blues" also handles mandolin, banjo and jug in addition to adding some blistering slide Tunes range from the boogie beats of "So Long Rosalee," "You're Gonna Find Your Blues," and the Hooker-like "Love Like Heroin" to the slinky shuffle of "If I Had a Nickel," to the clawhammer banjo-driven "Going to the River." Lawrence is also the master of the droning, monotone old-style blues, holding down a minor-key trance-like beat on "Lay Down My Sorrow" and "Detroit 'Motor City' Blues." Lawrence seems to be particularly fond of the boogie beat, though, as mentioned, there are several tunes here which seem to fit that style. One of the best is the spirited "Going Down to Louisiana," which begins with a lightning-quick slide riff before launching into a rapid-paced, zydeco-influenced party call interspersed with more slide solos. Overall, a very good recording by a very talented artist who knows how to make the most of his skills. Rock Plus Roll The Snakehandlers Blues Band Union Records Les Reynolds I have seen this CD advertised in some blues publications recently, so I was happy to be able to review it. Once I put it on the CD player, I was even happier. From the first song, they hooked me, but the songs only got better from there. The music is a blues-rock mix (OK, maybe a little more rock than blues) with some excellent harp and guitar. The vocals are also notable. A couple of the songs feature growling vocals a la Mike Lynch of Da Mudcats. The group is from right up the road in Franklin Indiana. Lyrics on the CD are good also. On Long Legged Woman, the song starts out She s long in the leg, Wide in the hip, She s a tall drink of water, and I m gonna have to get me a sip etc. Similar lyrics occur throughout the CD. Most songs have plenty of harp and it is very well performed, even standout I would say. Keyboards and guitar are tastefully done too (as opposed to overdone solos). This music is lively toe tapping, hand drumming music, and slow bluesy tunes too. The songs are original and creative. V-Twin Woman is a different song with harp and what sounds like vocals through the harp mike, with catchy lyrics too. The last song on the 11 song CD called 90 Miles an Hour is another one that caught my ear that I have now played over several times. This CD is recommended by me as a definite buy for blues-rock or harp lovers out there. You can check out sound clips at www. snakehandlers.com. Bob Brown 6

7 Can t Control Myself Gina Sicilia SwingNation/VizzTone While young Philly singer-songwriter Gina Sicilia has made quite a splash over the past three to four years, and has proven herself to be a talented artist, true blues fans might be disappointed with her latest CD. Sicilia's 2007 debut "Allow Me to Confess" seemed to bring a bright new voice to the blues, with her silky and sultry vocal delivery. That was followed by an entry into the world of country and Americana with "Hey Sugar." Now, "Can't Control Myself" shows a continuation of her trend towards exploring other genres as she includes more soul, Americana, rhythm & blues, and blues. In other words, she's all over the map. Before blues fans get the wrong idea, though, one thing needs to be made clear here: Sicilia is a wonderful singer-- and when she sings blues, she really sings the blues. This latest release, once again produced and engineered by Dave Gross (who also played every instrumental track except for trumpet, sax, and one lap-steel cut), starts out with a song most blues lovers would appreciate. "Addicted" is a dark, rhythmic, melodically simple and bluesy toe-tapper. While it's right on the edge of being "overproduced," with horns and keyboards in the mix, the song still allows the young chanteuse to remain out front. Her slow, but rocked-out treatment of Willie Dixon's classic "Crazy 'Bout You Baby," is excellent -- for what it is. Again, it pushes the envelope towards the "overdone" category -- but still well-executed in spite of itself. And, again, Sicilia's fantastic voice is clearly what drives the song. By this time, it's also apparent that her vocals are quite controlled, which makes the CD's title a bit of an anomaly. (Just a reviewer's musing here...) Most of the remainder of the 10-song list is a mix of country-tinged, Americana and ballad-type tunes. Just two others approach being able to be called blues: the funky "Wish the Clock Would Stop" and "Gimme a Simple Song." But calling those blues tunes is stretching it just a bit. Overall, this CD is excellent, and Sicilia's soulful voice is one of the best to come along recently. It's just that it would be hard to legitimately file this under "blues" in any record store. Lulu s House J. Edwards Serenity Hill Les Reynolds There must be some mistake here. The CD cover and the music do not fit. Remember the album covers of yesterday that attracted you to buy the album? Yes album covers were an example-you could look at the album covers for some time and the music seemed to fit. Another famous example is Carly Simon s breakout album No Secrets. The album covers conveyed the type of music that one was likely to encounter. This CD cover shows a young Edwards sitting on the front porch of a middle class home with nice entry door, pleasant colored siding on the house. He is dressed in jeans, a white shirt, blue sports jacket, hair cut short, thin mustache and goatee, and with glasses, playing an acoustic guitar. OK. Now put the CD on. Is this the same guy? The first song, Ain t Gonna Be Your Dog is electric not acoustic- very good electric as a matter of fact. Secondly, this guy s voice is smoky-bar, gravelly, rough hewn, aged, remarkable blues voice. This guy belongs in a dimly lit smoke filled bar, not in suburbia. About the music: Edwards songs are excellent. The music, a mix of blues and rock, is exceptional, the lyrics are good and overall, it is just good music. Still the King and Come on In My Bedroom feature great electric slide work and Turn Me On features Edwards on harp also. The guitar work on Turn Me On will remind you of Jimmy Thackery. The last song on the CD, Eatin at Lulu s finally finds Edwards on acoustic guitar. Partly because of that, the song is a real departure from the rest of the CD. It is a sort of country blues number well done. His voice on this song overpowers the guitar, which is not a negative by any stretch. It is early in the year of course, but so far this is my pick for CD of the year. Bob Brown Get More Blues News From the Keith S. 9 Kentucky Home Front Spring 2011 Louisville, KY Thankfully there are always more things going on in River City than one could possibly do. Pick and choose. Pick and choose. We can always pick and choose, but often we end up doing the same things in the same places with the same band and the same fans. And wouldn t change it for the world. For a change, we have started attending shows at the Clifton Center. John Gage brings in interesting and diverse groups for his FRONT PORCH radio broadcasts that usually tape 2 one hour shows at each Saturday taping. For this week s first half- hour of taping we were introduced to Paul Carney a Flamenco guitar player who has worked with Flamenco Louisville since I was impressed. I can watch people who know what they are doing and are good at what they do - forever. Flamenco comes to us via European Gypsies, and are really from Jewish romance songs. In keeping with the Latin theme of the first half-hour of our radio taping, the second half-hour opened with a Louisville group, formed here in 2006, Appalatin, bringing us a blend of music from Latin America and the Caribbean, with band members hailing from Central America, the Andes and Appalachia. Instrumentation featured the guitar, charango, mandolin, Andean flutes, bongos, congos, and caj`on, while their songs reflect messages of freedom, community, empowerment, human rights, spirituality and environmental stewardship. In our second hour of our 1st half-hour of Radio Land events - we were introduced to Steve Lyon, who has released 2 original albums There s no place like Mars, and All You ve Got is All It Takes, and has written at least one book for children, The Gift Moves, w was named the Golden Kite Honor book in Our last ½ segment of Music on the Radio that you could watch from an audience brought us THE SQUIRRELS (yes, same as the address for Mr. Lyons above) who have been competing with Delbert McClinton to see who could have the most members in their respective bands. This group has been playing for more than 20 years commercials, studio jobs, backing live performers from Bo Diddley to Josh Turner and includes former and present members of Exile, The Breeding Bunch, New Coon Creek Girls, Daddy s Car. The current lineup includes: Roger Bon Durant guitar and vocals, Wanda Bennet (originally from Harlan, Ky., grew up in New Albany, and now resides in Louisville) on fiddle and vocals, Bob Goff bass guitar and vocals, Steve Lyon on piano and vocals, and Marty Walker on drums. This group is both electric and eclectic with their song list running from the blues to western swing, Cajun to gospel, Ella to Dr. John, Jerry Lee to Willie. Harlan, KY meets Chicago before settling in Louisville, but keeps its accent. URL same as Mr. Lyons. This was 2 hours of radio taping that made you feel like you re a part of the event and brought some great listening pleasure our way. They also raffled off an acoustic guitar and had popcorn, cookies and cokes for sale. It was a pretty nice evening and also featured Colonel Bob Thompson with some front porch musings, John Gage doing some picking and grinning, and Graham Shelby as the Story Teller.
