3 Letter From the Prez No less than three blues events in our area will get the month of May off to a fast start this festival season. The Jeffersontown-Crusade Blues Festival returns for a fifth year. Dale Cashon, the creator of the festival, now heads the newly-created Louisville Music Charities, Inc. (LMC). LMC was specifically started to oversee the running of the J- Town festival and may get involved in future musical endeavors for charity. On Friday night, May 15 the festival's Blues Bash will take place at the Fraternal Order of Eagles in J-Town. The music starts at 6:00 pm and admission is $5. The following day the festival returns to its main location at Veterans Memorial Park in J-Town with music beginning at noon. The festival is free and there is plenty of free parking available. See the ad in this issue of Blues News for information or visit the website at Remember that the proceeds go to the Crusade for Children so come out and show your support. Just when the J-Town festival starts to wind down on Saturday make your way over to Pitt Academy at 6010 Preston Hwy for another shot of blues. In addition to providing an excellent selection of burgoo, mutton, pork and Photo by Bob Brown chicken barbecue the festival will have a blues tent with three bands and a jam at the end of the night. More details at or see the ad in this issue of Blues News. This event is also a benefit for Pitt Academy, an independent Catholic school serving students with learning differences and disabilities. On Sunday, May 24 the first annual Red Mile Blues Festival takes place at the Red Mile Race Track in Lexington, KY. Co-hosted by the track and the G. Busy Blues Room the free festival starts at 1:00 pm and will feature music by the Here For The Party Band, The City, the G. Busy Blues Revue, Robbie Bartlett, Velveeta Jones, and Li'l Ed & the Blues Imperials. Check out G. Busy's website at Calling all blues bands. You still have time to apply to play at this year s Garvin Gate Blues Festival. Mike Suttles will be accepting applications through the end of July. The festival takes place Friday and Saturday, October 9 and 10. You can reach him at msuttles@insightbb.com. One surefire way for your band to play at Garvin Gate is to win this year s KBS blues band competition. The deadline to enter the band and solo/duo contests is Saturday, May 30. Entry forms are available on-line at or by calling I want to send a personal thank you out to Kevin Yazell, host of the Saturday Night Blues Party on WFPK 91.9 FM radio. Kevin has been a strong supporter of the blues society and blues musicians in our area. Besides playing his usual assortment of excellent national and vintage blues tunes he manages to play a song or two each week from some of our local talent. If you have listened to his show over the last couple of weeks you would have heard selections by da Mudcats, Butch Williams, Big Poppa Stampley and the Stella-Vees. You can catch his show from 9:00 pm until midnight every Saturday night. But don't switch off your radio at the witching hour. Stay tuned for Woodrow on the Radio with host Woody Chancy from midnight to 6:00 am every Friday and Saturday night. Woody's features the kind of jukebox you hope you find when you get to Heaven. When you get to the Roadhouse be sure to tell 'em Gary sent ya. Gary 3

4 New Music Reviews! Live at The Quilt Box Tin Can Buddha 2008 Tin Can Buddha LLC Tin Can Buddha is Rodney Hatfield (vocals, harmonica, percussion), Lee Carroll (piano, organ, accordion), Mitch Ivanoff (vocal, guitars) and Stewart Miller (bass). This album was recorded live at Marianne Welch s Quilt Box studio in Louisville KY on April 26, You may know Rodney from his time with the Metropolitan Blues All Stars. The unusual CD case and booklet insert contains art work done by Rodney under his artistic alter ego Art Snake. This is pure blues from veterans who appreciate blues and roots music. In the words of our Blues Curmudgeon, Keith Clements, They get into a zone and play the blues the way it is meant to be. There are 9 cuts on the CD (3 of which are quite long), most are songs you know from the likes of McKinley Morganfield (aka Muddy Waters), Willie Dixon, Hank Williams Sr, and public domain. And they are all done in the blues style of Tin Can Buddha I enjoyed the music, you will too if you love the blues. They don t seem to get together often, but if you get the opportunity to see them you oughta go Rodney plays a mean harp. Check out their web site at (where you will also find Keith s review from Louisville Music News) and hear the music at Back in December 2008, Tin Can Buddha (sans Stewart Miller) was on WFPK s Live Lunch if you missed it, you can listen to some of it on WFPK s web site: under the Live Lunch Archive. Deb (aka DWild1) Everybody s Talkin Charles Burton Blues Band Charles Burton Blues Band 2008 This rock-blues band is a very tight band from the San Diego area. They recently competed in the IBC competition, sent by the Blues Lovers United of San Diego (BLUSD), and recently toured Scandinavia for four months. The members of the band are Charles Burton (guitars and vocals), Paul Jeffrey (Drums) and Steve Wells (bass). The 16 songs on the CD are all good. I admit that I have listened to the CD SEVERAL times. The band will remind locals of Da Mudcats. Their style and songs are the same type of music that has made Da Mudcats so popular. Their playing is flawless, the recording is exceptional and the originals, all 16 of them, are good. Check them out at This is a good CD and I highly recommend it. Bob Brown Blues Revue s Blues Music Sampler Various Artists December * January 2009 (Current Magazine Issue Pictured) Blues Revue Magazine is only published bi-monthly now, but every other issue comes with a Blues Sampler CD. This is a great way to sample many artists before you spend the bucks for a full CD, plus you get the magazine packed full of blues information 6 issues and 3 CDs a year. As a novice musicologist and bluesologist, I love compilation CDs and these blues samplers are very good. The latest issue contains 17 cuts from artists both known and unknown to me, and that makes for some very good listening for a long time. For the most part, I like all the artists and music, although there are a couple I don t care for. However, that s the case with most compilations there are usually one or two songs you won t like, but you didn t buy a whole album and only like one song. And on many occasions, I have liked every song on the CD. Blues Revue Magazine says they are the world's largest blues publication, devoted to the listener and musician whose musical passion is the full spectrum of the blues. In addition to the CD samplers, Blues Revue magazine has artist profiles and interviews with several artists in each issue, news, columns and CD reviews. The current edition is the annual Festival Issue, and includes a profile of Watermelon Slim and interviews with Mick Fleetwood, Shemekia Copeland and Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band. You can check out Blues Revue at and subscribe on-line or call Toll Free You can only get the Blues Music Samplers with a subscription. Deb (aka DWild1) 4

5 Sweetheart Like You Guy Davis Red House Records RHR211 The son of actors/writers Ruby Dee and the late Ossie Davis has released a creative showcase of his own with "Sweetheart Like You," a 14-song collection where his many blues influences can be heard. Actually, it is the music of Bob Dylan, who some call a bluesman at heart, which starts things off on the title track. Davis pays excellent homage to the bard, with a singing style that even hints of Dylan, joined by Nerak Patterson's Dylanesque electric guitar. The rest of the CD is all blues, though; however some are done with a slight "twist." Davis wrote about half these songs, and either covered or arranged the others. Additional tunes which bear mentioning are "Down South Blues" (Son House), "Hoochie Coochie Man" (Dixon), "Can't Be Satisfied" (Muddy Waters' tune stepped up a notch and played on a banjo--and it works!), and Big Joe Williams-style "Baby Please Don't Go," one of only a couple from the list done with a slide. Overall, a good effort. Les Reynolds River of Time Jorma Kaukonen Red House Records RHR-CD217 Kaukonen is one of the founding members of the Jefferson Airplane and also a member of Hot Tuna (formed actually during the hot years of Jefferson Airplane) which he still tours with. After more than two dozen albums with Hot Tuna, he has decided to go back to his roots music on this CD. His song selection consists of some originals, and others from Roy Book Binder, Merle Haggard, Reverend Gary Davis and Mississippi John Hurt. His songs are mostly acoustic with a base of Country/Bluegrass/Folk, replete with mandolins, fiddles, etc. Even though he sings of the blues, it is with a country music flair. If I had to categorize this CD it would be country, not blues. It is more old time country though, not the energetic new country sound with electric guitars. This is almost exclusively acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle. As a blues CD, this one is a loser. As a country CD, this is OK, but not worth buying. Sorry Jorma. Bob Brown Bridges Mary Flower Yellow Dog Records YDR-CD1642 Multi-style guitarist and vocalist Mary Flower brings her smooth, honey sweet voice and diverse guitar styles to her eighth recording--her third on Yellow Dog--aptly titled "Bridges". The 14 tracks bring together acoustic blues, ragtime, jazz, and old-time gospel that feature the Portland, Oregon-based musician's fingerstyle and slide guitar skills and several notable guest artists, including champion banjo player-turned-slide-guitarist Tony Furtado, Nashville bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien and blues and jazz vocalist Duffy Bishop, among others. Flower's vocals are such that she's very easy to understand; the melodies are catchy and several of the tunes will have your toes tappin' or fingers a -snappin'. This girl plays the blues, but she ain't got 'em. Another plus is that Flower's considerable guitar skill is never overdone--she only plays what the song calls for. The CD's most notable tunes are: the opener, "Rhythm of the Road" (Flower, Aschman, Conescu) which features Furtado's bottleneck slide and some spare banjo from him late in the tune and Flower's dexterity on her own guitar; track two (has a very long title!), which combines jazz, swing and ragtime and features boogie pianist Janice Scroggins and backup vocalists Bishop and Becky Kilgore; and two country-blues/gospel tunes--track four "When I Get Home I'm Gonna Be Satisfied" (E. Ball), and track 7 "Slow Lane to Glory" (Flower), both featuring Mary's lap slide and her son Jesse Withers on string bass. This recording is very representative of Flower's general repertoire and showcases her considerable skills over several genres with her instrument of choice--the guitar. It is also well-produced and does an excellent job in honoring the diverse musicians who have collaborated with, mentored and influenced her over the years. Les Reynolds 5

6 Alive at Michael Murphy s The Louisville Blues Fun CD from a local band, The Louisville Blues, with Mike Lynch on bass guitar and vocals, Mark Bright on Saxophone, Dana Roy on electric and acoustic guitars, Steve Holmes on drums and Wayne Harbin on vocals and guitar. It was recorded live, June 15, 2006, at Michael Murphy s in downtown Louisville. Twelve tracks of familiar blues by songwriters Robert Johnson, Jimmy Cox, B.B. King, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and J.J. Cale keep you singing the blues. My favorite cuts are Too Tall Mambo, Call Me the Rocket, Hoochie Coochie Man, and Blues Boys Theme. Enjoyed the music and the talk. You can hear the Louisville Blues around town check the newsletter calendar and our website for future dates. You can also hear Mike Lynch with da Mudcats, Mark Bright with Lamont Gillispie and 100 Proof Blues, and see Dana Roy dancin at blues clubs. I just saw the Louisville Blues at Stevie Ray s last week. See them LIVE! CORRECTION The February edition of the Blues News incorrectly identified members of the Stray Cat Blues Band, c Standing, left to right, are Bruce Lively, Lamont Gillispie, and Ricky Mason.
