3 Letter From the Prez On Saturday, November 15 the Kentuckiana Blues Society will celebrate it's twentieth anniversary with a party at the Vernon Club. Our entertainment that evening will be provided by Miss Lissa & Company from Dayton, OH and The Beat Daddys from Nashville, TN. Miss Lissa & Company recently played at the Cincy Blues Festival and has placed second the last two years running in the Cincinnati Blues Challenge. Miss Lissa aka Melissa Young has been described as a cross between Susan Tedeschi, Janis Joplin and Etta James. You can find out more about them on-line at misslissaco. Miss Lissa & Company will start at 7:00 pm and will be followed by the southern blues-rock band The Beat Daddys. The Beat Daddys were formed in the late 1980's but band members Larry Grisham and Tommy Stillwell have known each other since high school in Cloverport, KY. The band has opened or toured with several national acts including B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Koko Taylor, Little Photo by Bob Brown Milton and Delbert McClinton. Last year their CD 5 Moons was nominated by the Kentucky Blues Society for the Blues Foundations Best Self-Produced CD of the Year and it placed in the top five. You can check them out at We looked at several locations for the party before choosing the Vernon Club. The club is located at 1575 Story Ave in Louisville. This is next to the I-64 West entrance ramp on Story Ave across from Hadley Pottery. The Vernon Club is actually in the basement of the Vernon Lanes bowling alley. The eight lane bowling alley is Louisville's oldest having been built in The club was recently renovated and contains a bar (beer only no wine or liquor), a large stage with an excellent sound system and a capacity for over 500 people. There is also a parking lot on site with room for 80 cars. Club owner Dale McCall is looking forward to hosting the blues society and has offered free bowling to our members. There will be a $5 admission fee but, as always, the birthday party is free for KBS members so don't forget to bring your membership card. The Vernon Club has a website at Nick Moss & the Flip Tops and Eddy The Chief Clearwater are the featured acts for this years Garvin Gate Blues Festival on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11. The Kentuckiana Blues Society will also present its annual Sylvester Weaver award at Garvin Gate. We are grateful that the Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association, Budweiser, Don Driskell, Councilman George Unseld and the other sponsors brought the festival back last year. I'm sure this one will be even bigger and better. Besides the usual assortment of great local and national blues talent, this years festival will feature students from the Louisville School of Rock Check out the full schedule in this issue of Blues News. We hope you will also join us on Saturday, October 18 at Zena's Cafe for this years solo/duo blues competition. In the past the blues society has only sponsored a band competition but we have the option of sending both a band and a solo/ duo act to Memphis next February to compete in the International Blues Challenge. After last years competition I spoke with several musicians who told me they were interested in the solo/duo contest. We have received applications from several excellent blues musicians in our area including Tyrone Cotton, Walter Lay, Obie Harmonica Red Cox and Big Poppa Stampley among others. This will be a great night of music with doors opening at 6:00 pm and the contest starting at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5. We want to thank both Stevie Ray's and Zena's Cafe for hosting our contests this year and to Jeff Carpenter's Al Fresco studio for once again providing studio recording time to winners of the contests. On Sunday, September 7 more than 100 people came to Stevie Ray's and helped raise $1,500 for the Musician's Emergency Resource Foundation (MERF). Hambone, the Travelin' Mojos, the King Bees and Steve Ferguson and the Midwest Creole Ensemble put on a great show that lasted close to midnight. Thanks to everyone who came out to support our local musicians in need. The Kentucky Center continues to welcome national blues acts and they are having a one-of-a-kind show on Monday, October 27 at 7:30 pm. The Experience Hendrix Tribute Tour will visit only nineteen cities and Louisville is one of them. The tribute to rock and blues icon Jimi Hendrix will feature Buddy Guy, Hubert Sumlin, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang and from the Jimi Hendrix Experience band Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox. Tickets are $45, $60 and $75 and are available on-line at or by calling 502/ More information on the tour is available at The 9th Annual Big Rock Jazz Fest will have a blues band close the show this year. The Stray Cat Blues Band Reunion Show with Lamont Gillispie, Bruce Lively, Greg Martin, Jimmy Brown, Ricky Mason and Andy Brown will appear along with Steve Allee and his Quintet and the Juggernaut Jug Band. The free festival is Sunday, October 5 from 2:00 to 7:00 pm at the Big Rock Pavilion in Cherokee Park. The first Phoenix Hill Neighborhood Music Fest will take place on Saturday, October 25 from 1:00 until 8:00 pm. There will be a mix of blues, folk, jazz and bluegrass music with The Jim Masterson Band as the closing act. The festival will take place at the Lucille Grant Park located at 1000 E. Liberty Street. Afterwards the party will move to The Lounge at 947 E. Madison St. The Lounge hosts a blues jam every Wednesday night starting at 8:30 pm. For more information contact Cindy with the Phoenix Hill Neighborhood Association at Gary 3

6 New Music Reviews! Today Mike Zito Eclecto Groove Records EGR CD 503 I could tell you about Mike Zito playing guitar since he was an infant, played first professionally when he was 3, snuck into bars to listen to music etc- the typical blues musician bio. Instead, I would like to tell you about the music, and let you judge Mike. His new CD, Today is his first major record label release, but his fifth release overall. In 2007, he met Randy Chortoff of Eclecto Groove Records and within a few weeks, he had a contract. Zito s music is polished and contemporaneous. Surely his former work was practice for this release. I listened to the cuts on the CD several times and the more I listened to them, the more they attracted me to them. There is almost a magnetism that makes one want to sing/play along with the songs. The 13 tracks on the CD are each unique and represent excellent musicianship and are recorded well. There are electric guitar as well as acoustic guitar tunes here. Eight musicians join Zito on this CD including Mitch Kashmar on two cuts. The first cut starts out like a rock tune but then calms down into what you will swear is John Mayer singing. The third cut Holding Out For Love is a slower song with a reverent use of guitar that is my personal favorite on the CD. His soulful voice is a real plus to this as well as other songs, and his lyrics are meaningful. All of the songs except Little Red Corvette (By Prince) are Zito originals. On Slow It Down Zito does just that. It is a slow-cooking song that holds you just above the floor. It decries the speed of life and how he came to the revelation that he needs to slow down. Most of the lyrics are in the first person singular and it sounds to the listener that the songs are all taken from his personal experiences-certainly feelings, which he is laying down to music (Isn t that what Blues is all about?). This is a good CD and offers a diverse collection of modern blues songs with Zito s distinctive voice to add a little flavor to them. Bob Brown The Vintage Room The Blues Experience with Cash McCall Dixon Landing Music While there appears to be little, if any, new ground being broken on this CD, The Vintage Room: The Blues Experience, with Cash McCall (2007, Dixon Landing Music), the recording is certainly well done and is appropriately titled as it delivers vintage Chicago blues with a bit of a contemporary lineup. This recording stays true to the traditional spirit of Chicago blues, as well as its sound. McCall, born in Missouri in 1941 as Morris Dillison, Jr., would eventually come under the tutelage of Willie Dixon at Chess Records in Chicago as a sessions guitarist and songwriter for the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Little Milton, among others. His precise, stinging guitar is just as valuable on this CD. Adding to the energy of some of these tunes is Willie Dixon s grandson, Alex, born in 1975 on Chicago s tough south side and raised by his grandfather. The younger Dixon produced this recording and added some light-fingered piano work to several of these tunes. To punctuate the vintage sound, the influence of the elder Dixon is felt even further as there are three of his most well-known tunes performed here: I Just Want to make Love to You, I m Ready, and Bring It On Home, the latter one of the best of the CD s 11 songs. And while all the band members are skilled, it s the harmonica of Steve Bell which truly stands out. While his style is not unique, his level of skill is quite high on the charts and he can blow some low-down- n -dirty blues harp when the situation calls for it. So, if you re looking for a little something different or extra in your blues music, you might want to pass on this one. However, if you truly enjoy pure, grade-a Chicago blues which stays true to the sound and spirit of the style, this will fit right into your listening rotation on a regular basis. Les Reynolds 6

7 Bob Cox Retires from KBS Board On July 8, 1997, my wife and I went to see Liz Pennock and Dr. Blues at the Rudyard Kipling. I had seen this duo the year before at the Chicago Blues Festival and was impressed with her 6 finger mastery of the keyboards and his slide dobro when they backed Diamond Teeth Mary. Bob Cox was the only other person to show up so we had our own private blues party. With only the five of us in the back room, we all became one, joking and singing together. Bob had just moved to Louisville and he quickly became involved with the KBS writing articles, participating at events, taking pictures and contributing to our meetings with his biting wit. He was elected to the KBS board in October 1997 just before his soul mate, Brenda Major, became president. Bob quickly came up with a list of blues RATS (Random Ass Thoughts) for our society to consider and became our membership chairperson. Bob and Brenda collaborated on an insightful interview with Jim Rosen shortly before he died. Bob also coordinated the catering for our blues cruises and created those whimsical maps showing our itinerary. The competition for a new KBS tee shirt design was a Bob project as well as polling the membership with a questionnaire. On a few occasions he sat in for Scott Mullins for the Saturday Night Blues Party on WFPK. We will miss his witty quips at our meetings and in the newsletters.
