3 KBS President Mark Sneed Letter From The Prez 10/14/2016 Greetings Blues Fans, It s been a busy month since I wrote the last Prez Letter. We had the Solo/Duo contest on September 31 at Stevie Ray's Blues Bar. We had 13 entries for the contest and 10 competed that night including Mark "Big Poppa" Stampley winning the contest. Each entrant played for 20 minutes and were judged for blues content, instrumental talent, vocal talent, originality and stage presence. I appreciate all the entrants for signing up and showing us how talented they are. I was able to make the Band contest and the Solo/Duo contest and I have to say we have a lot of talented musicians in the Louisville area. "Big Poppa" Stampley will compete in the IBC's Solo/Duo contest and Laurie Jane & the 45 s will compete in the Band contest. Both of those contests will be held in January 31 - February 4 in Memphis, TN. There are many KBS members going so I know they ll have support from the Kentuckiana Blues Society. Hotel information and ticket sales for the IBC was posted on October 2 nd on the IBC web site. Rooms book up quick for this event so I m not sure if rooms are still available close to the IBC activities. The Garvin Gate Blues Festival was the second weekend in October and the weather was fantastic with some great Blues bands playing both nights. I d bet there was a record crowd for the festival and everyone looked like they had a great time. KBS founding member Keith Clements presented Mr. Mike Suttles with the Sylvester Weaver Award Saturday night. I think we caught him off guard without him realizing he was getting the award. I knew Mike has been involved for a long time with Blues music in Louisville and I was amazed when Keith started listing all the items Mike had been involved with. Thanks Mike, for all you ve done and are doing in Louisville to Keep Blues Music Alive. Our next event coming up is the Kentuckiana Blues Society Anniversary Party on November 18 th at Headliner's Music Hall on Lexington Road. It s our 28 th anniversary and the party has been titled Ladies Night Out with three talented female blues performers and their bands taking the stage. We have Laurie Jane & the 45 s, Queen Delphine & the Crown Jewels and Sheryl Rouse & the Bluez Brothers. It s FREE if you re a KBS member with a current membership. You must present your active membership card at the door to get free admission. I ll be there and I hope to see all our members there as well, so come out and help make the party the largest crowd we ve had since the 25 th anniversary party. Mark 3

4 Ladies Sing The Blues 2 Ladies Sing the Blues Returns for another year! Coming up in just a few days, Sunday (Nov. 6, to be exact), an event showcasing nine of Louisville s best female singers will commence at 5 PM at the Ursuline Arts Center on Lexington Rd. Last year s version, with roughly the same structure (3-song sets) and theme, was held at a small venue (Lettersong Gallery and Calligraphy Studio on Story Ave.) and it was outgrown almost before the event started. The show was thoroughly enjoyed by all; and a repeat (although in a larger space) seemed almost a given. So, here we go. The 2016 incarnation has all the talent of LSB1, although some of these singers will be new to those who attend, and others will be quite familiar. Who are the performers? Included in the lineup among the more wellknown (at least to blues fans) are Artie Wells (Walnut Street Rhythm and Blues Band), Amy Johnson of Little T&A, Sylvia Walters, and perhaps to some - Marjorie Marshall. For those who follow jazz, Carly Johnson will be singing some of her favorites (and one as a request from this writer!). Colette Delaney comes from the world of musical theater, and has a diverse repertoire. Among those who appear to be just making their way into the local limelight are Kendra Villiger, Tuesday Daniels and Sarah Breit. Villiger and Breit have lately been trying out their tunes at Lettersong, while Daniels frequents the jams at Stevie Ray s. And the fact they are new takes nothing away from their abilities. These ladies can sing! Of course, that goes for all of them! The lineup is a bit diverse, so why call it Ladies Sing the Blues? Well, all the song styles they will deliver are blues-related or a blues-derivative. Even the rock-oriented sets often performed by Amy Johnson fit into that category. After all, the old saying goes: The blues had a baby and called it rock n roll. And while not all of them sing in the exact same style, each has a big, soulful voice and can certainly command a stage which is a good thing, because small ensembles have been encouraged over big bands. The event, is, of course, focusing on the singer the voice. The event title is also catchy, and a slight twist of the title about the iconic Billie Holiday film, related logo and all, seemed only fitting. For those who attended last year s event, and for those who have attended shows at UAC, you know what to expect. For those who are new to the showcase and the venue, you are highly encouraged to treat yourself. It will be one of the best concerts you attend, period. The vision for this project is to simply give the best female singers an outlet to offer their very best, and to do it in a format and scope not often, if at all, seen here in Louisville. It is a celebration created to honor these wonderful artists and allow them opportunity to shine and do it together. So, there you have it. However, a bit more basic information might be in order here: Address: 3113 Lexington Road (best way to go from downtown, east on Lexington, pass Stilz, look for two columns, turn left, go to stop sign, turn right, building 5. Entrance from Lexington Rd., turns and building will be marked.). Doors open at 4:15. Tickets: only $20 in advance. Call , or go online to lettersongstudio.com, or lettersongstudio@icloud.com. (You can also call the who is old school and is carrying tickets around.) Get them early. Price goes up to $25 at the door. We ll see you at Ladies Sing the Blues. By Les Reynolds 4

5 Back To The Blues Those of us who were lucky enough to see and hear them will tell you that there probably was no other Chicago Blues band that could match the flat out fun and joy that Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers projected. Hound Dog Taylor, Brewer Phillips, and Ted Harvey could easily appropriated James Brown s sobriquet of the hardest working band in show business. Yet, it never seemed like work; it was simply relentless exuberance. I got to know HDT through both booking him at the Midwest Blues Festival and working with Bruce Iglauer in promoting Alligator artists in those infancy days of the label. I even helped Bruce box up some of the initial pressings of Alligator 4701 Hound Perry Aberli Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers the most impressive start that I believe any label has ever had and an a cornerstone to any Blues collection. To this day, my copy of the lp hangs on the wall in my study/music room with several other gems in my collection. The HouseRockers was the well-deserved name for Brewer Phililps and Ted Harvey. Dog always would get excited during sets, calling out for Phillips to take solos, and introduce him to the audience as Phillip Brewer, while exhorting Ted to don t give em no rest as his drumming seemed to be nonstop for entire sets. I first saw Hound Dog in Ann Arbor in 1970, and again in 71, 72, and 73. While he did not appear at the first Midwest Blues, he did play at our concert series in 1972 and again at the rejuvenated festival in In 73 there was the standard after festival party at my house and Hound Dog was jamming with Houston Stackhouse and Brewer and Ted, only Hound Dog was banging away on an old battered upright piano I had at the time! I also travelled to Chicago a short jaunt from South Bend - to see him at Theresa s, accompanied by Bruce Iglauer and Wes Race. So, what s the point of all this nostalgia? On October 6 of this year, the last of the HouseRockers, Ted Harvey, died. Hound Dog had died in 1975 when he went into the hospital for what was thought at the time to be pneumonia but was lung cancer. To worsen matters, he had to be detoxed before they could begin any treatment which only aggravated his condition. Brewer Phililps died in 1999 of a heart attack at age 65. He had played with Hound Dog since He would continue to play after Dog s death with JB Hutto, and, eventually, a solo career; but it was never the same. Ted Harvey died of natural causes at age 85. During his career post HouseRockers, Ted played with too many Chicago Blues greats to list. Of course, to be trite, they all live on in the music of the HouseRockers. But, to have seen them live, I now realize, was the experience of a lifetime, and one that I and many others simply, took for granted. And the music was so much, much more than Hound Dog s claim as to how he would be remembered: He couldn t play for shit, be he sure had a good time. We all did, Dog, Phillip, and Ted; we all did. And I miss you all. Perry W. Aberli Got a blues-related event, recording or item to promote? Advertise in the Blues News! 6 MUSIC MAKER RELIEF FOUNDATION PRESERVES THE BLUES, SENDS STUNNING PHOTO EXHIBIT AND LIVE BLUES SHOW TO LOUISVILLE While helping a small group of blues musicians in Winston-Salem, NC in the early 1990 s, Music Maker Relief founders Tim and Denise Duffy were amazed to discover elderly artists still performing the musical traditions of the 19th and early 20th century America, living in extreme poverty. When we asked how we could help, they didn t ask for money- they wanted a gig. says Tim Duffy. The Duffys worked to secure bookings, record their music and promote their careers, and the artists were soon performing on national stages at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and in European festivals. The Music Maker Relief Foundation was born to preserve the musical traditions of the South by directly supporting the musicians who make them, through education, archiving and performance. Music Maker serves the most vulnerable musicians - 55 years and older with incomes under $18,000 - who play the Southern musical traditions of blues, gospel, string band, and Native American. The Musician Sustenance program provides grants to help with monthly bills for medicine, food and housing or with emergency funding in times of crisis. Through support from the National Endowment for the Arts and local support from the Clifton Center, the Garvin Gate Blues Festival and the Kentuckiana Blues Society, Music Maker Relief is bringing two exceptional events to Louisville audiences: Our Living Past: Platinum Portraits of Music Maker, a stunning exhibit of 27 portraits by founder and photographer Tim Duffy who has spent 35 years documenting blues musicians, opens with a reception November 3rd, 5:30-7:00PM at the Clifton Center. Featured in TIME Magazine and on NPR, the exhibit includes portraits of Ironing Board Sam, Sharon Jones and Taj Mahal. The Blues Revue, the live touring ensemble of some of the most incredible musicians Music Maker represents, will perform a concert November 17, 8:00PM. Featuring singer Pat Mother Blues Cohen, guitarists Cool John Ferguson and Harvey Dalton Arnold, and drummer Bubba Norwood, the faced-paced non-stop music performance is said to often tear down the house. More than just a stirring performance, says musician Ardie Dean, every Revue show is a cultural event. All of these artists have a story. Both the exhibit and concert are free to the public at the Clifton Center, 2117 Payne Street, Louisville, KY More information available at and or by contacting Clifton Center Programming Coordinator Julie Purcell at
