1 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE KENTUCKIANA BLUES SOCIETY...PRESERVING, PROMOTING AND PERPETUATING THE BLUES. Louisville, Kentucky Incorporated 1989 November 2012 Photo Courtesy of Blue Mother Tupelo The husband and wife team of Ricky Davis (acoustic and electric guitars, Dobro, vocals) and Micol Davis (piano, tambourine, vocals) began performing as a duo in Micol was drawn to the thriving live music scene during her college years at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where she and Ricky met. He invited her to sing with his band, Soulchaser, a couple of times, and they found their mutually strong interest in artists like Delaney & Bonnie, John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison to be an undeniable force in their friendship. Soon after they began performing as Blue Mother Tupelo at local open-mike and songwriters nights with the idea of making their own roots-rock sound. Landing a weekly gig led to the addition of Ed Corts on drums and Jim Ladd on bass and a progressive rock-blues sound that soon became a staple in clubs in east Tennessee and western North Carolina. They recorded a demo for club bookings, then released it as an album in 1997 entitled My Side of the Road. A year later, they moved to Nashville. The four-piece band played in clubs throughout Tennessee, western North Carolina and Georgia and opened concerts for Delbert McClinton, Grand Funk Railroad and Pat Travers. In between gigs, the Davis duo performed at open-mike nights and songwriters' rounds in Music City. A change in musical direction led to regrouping and Ricky and Micol set out on their own again. Their 2001 release, Delta Low -- Mountain High, was an experimental, eclectic blend of songs and styles reflecting their love of Southern roots, earthy rock, soul and mountain music. It was followed by their third release in 2009 called Heaven & Earth. Blue Mother Tupelo will be at Natasha s Bistro in Lexington, KY on Thursday, November 8, at Uncle Slayton s on Friday, November 9 and at the Clifton Center on Saturday, November 10 as part of the Kentucky Homefront blues and jazz show. The KBS solo/duo contest winners Joe DeBow and Danny Henderson will open the show at 6:30 pm. They will be followed by the Gordon Bonham Blues Band of Indianapolis, IN at 7:45 pm. The headliner for this year's show is Long Tall Deb from Columbus, OH. They will take the stage at 9:30. Congratulations to Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof Blues, winners of this year's KBS Best Self- Produced CD contest. Lamont and the guys beat out Mississippi Adam Riggle, Little T&A and the Dirty Church Revival to take the top slot. Their CD will be sent to Memphis to compete with selections from other blues societies nationally and internationally. The winner will be announced at the International Blues Challenge next February in Memphis. As our IBC band contest winners, Lamont & 100 Proof and solo/duo winners Joe and Danny will all be competing in Photo by Cheryl Cissell that contest. Special fund raising pages have been set up for both the band and the duo through Facebook to help the guys accumulate the needed capital to make the trip. Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated and you can find them online at for Lamont and for Joe and Danny. On Sunday, October 14, several bands came together for the 4th Annual Remembering Our Roots show at Stevie Ray's. The memorial benefit is a tribute to Ricky Mason, Tim Krekel and Steve Ferguson. $1,420 was raised to support the Cabbage Patch Settlement House Performing Arts Program. It was my honor to be involved in organizing the event with Lamont Gillispie and Jimmy Brown. Bands taking part in the benefit included the Jim Masterson Band, Mr. Jimmy, The Tarnations, TKO, the Stray Cat Band, the Midwest Creole Ensemble and Little T&A. We'll have photos from the show in a future edition of Blues News. Notable shows this month included a combined blues and jazz Kentucky Homefront show at the Clifton Center on Saturday, November 10. That show will feature Tommy Stillwell, Clayton Dermon, Blue Mother Tupelo, Craig Wagner and the Pete Petersen Jazz Ensemble. The Beat Daddys will have a CD release party at Stevie Ray's on Saturday, November 10. The Stray Cat Band featuring Greg Martin will be there on Wednesday, November 21. 6 New Music Reviews! Beverly McClellan Fear Nothing Oarfin Records Beverly McClellan might be thought of as a blues musician --that would be a stretch, at least on this recording. Beverly McClellan CAN BE a blues artist, and on her latest release "Fear Nothing," there are at least elements of some very strong blues music. It needs to be said first and foremost that McClellan is a vocal powerhouse with few equals. Fortunately for the listener, her singing is controlled and passionate, never going beyond that "edge" which separates singing from screaming. Her singing is in the forefront all the way through on this 11-song recording, and that's a good thing! While the more folky, rock-ballad tunes are very good, the blues portions of the CD will be the focus here. Right out of the gate, McClellan rocks out with a bluesy-rootsy original titled "I See Love," guaranteed to get you moving. The uplifting lyrics are supplemented by some wicked slide guitar instrumental solos from Keb' Mo, who collaborated as a coproducer with David Z. Speaking of Mr. Moore (his given name), this entire CD has his signature all over it, at least in spirit, whether or not he actually touched a recording. "Nobody's Fault But Mine," by Blind Willie Johnson, is a very good rendition of the spooky blues-spiritual number that's been covered by many artists. "I Can't Hide Me" starts out in a rapid-paced I, IV, V blues chord progression and McClellan's growling assertion of revealing the true self instead of hiding it. High energy throughout the song. And, while this isn't really blues, Keb Mo's collaboration with McClellan on "Love Will Find a Way Out" is just plain fantastic. Once more, the rousing instrumentation and positive lyrics make this a joy to hear. So, the verdict? True blues fans will want to pass on this one. If you love passionate lyricism, affirmative words, a good feel and powerful female vocals (along with some nice slide guitar now and then), then this CD is recommended --highly recommended. 7 Pristine Detoxing Bluesnews Records The Norwegians are coming~ the Norwegians are coming. Oh, they're here, in the form of debut recording "Detoxing" from the group Pristine. Wait. Norwegians? Blues? Yep. But remember, there is a thriving blues scene in the Nordic nation and a few well-known international festivals. Pristine, however, adds some "extra ingredients" to its strong blues roots--try psychedelic trance rock, for one, and funky soul for another. A few of the more noticeable things about this album include the heaviness, hypnotic beat, and the vocals. Let's start there, with the vocals. Heidi Solheim is the captivating front woman, sounding like a mix of Adele, Chan Marshall and Susan Tedeschi all rolled into one (with an accent, of course). So, that means she's got power, soul, grit and a little grease-which actually mixes quite well with the rather odd assortment of psychedelia and bluesrocksoulfunk. The CD is basically well produced by Andreas Mjos and the band in general, and all songs but one are originals from Solheim. Gregg Allman's "Whipping Post" is actually the tune on which the singer wrings out the most passion and emotion and sounds the best. On some of the others, she is a bit more "distant" and "technical," which probably also fits well with the type of sound the band emanates. "Whipping Post" is a gritty, slow grind sung with controlled power and emotion and a crunchy guitar from Espen Jakobsen keeping the tune together. Even with the vocal interruption, and an unimpressive, very basic guitar solo midway, the hypnotic drone just makes you want more. Another one which features Solheim's great voice is the funky "Damage is Done", as she shakes her lyrics down into the cracks between the whirring organ and the gentle sounds of the rhythm section. The title track is dark, flowing and hypnotic--an alternative rock tune with heavy blues influence. Although, this does NOT sound like something one would listen to while detoxing... All in all, a solid effort. Solheim is the real star here. At times, the CD gets a bit ponderous and too heavy and hard. Fortunately, those moments don't last too long. It would be interesting to see what this group can do with some real basic, down-home straight blues. Les Reynolds Heritage Blues Orchestra And Still I Rise Red General Catalog The name of this group is a little misleading. The music on the CD is definitely blues and certainly pays tribute to early African American music. Orchestra is the only loosely used word in their title. The most important one though is Heritage. Chaney Sims (vocals), Bill Sims (vocals and guitars), Junior Mack (vocals, guitars), Vincent Bucher (harmonica), and Kenny Smith (drums) recorded this music as a reminder of how blues music started-slave plantations, churches, field hollers. Even though there are covers here, they are like no other renditions you have heard. But for the lyrics, you would not recognize songs such as Son House s Clarksdale Moan, Muddy Water s Catfish Blues, and Lead Belly s Go Down Hannah. There are gospel songs, ( Get Right Church ), levee camp songs, ( Levee Camp Holler -an a capella performance) and one I can t characterize. The song Go Down Hannah starts off with a man shouting out something mostly intelligible, then stops for a trumpet introduction, and slows to a female voice singing the lyrics with no backing instruments. After each measure, male voices shout a deep HUH. This music is really different. The musicianship is excellent, the recording is excellent and the vocals are good too. You can try a sample of the music at Bob Brown Boss Guitar Driving Music 2012 Tin Can Buddha Records The last that I looked at the website this CD had not yet been released. This CD is titled correctly: Driving Music! The music itself is driving blues that would make any purist or newcomer swell with delight! Six cuts ranging in time from four and a half minutes to almost ten minutes covering songs from Johnny Guitar Watson to Roosevelt Sykes to McKinley Morganfield that never let up on their onslaught. Driving music because it you were driving a car and had this playing in your CD machine driving might become so pleasurable life so great for the moments that you might pass everything on the road. Including any unmarked cars that happened to be in front of you. Great moving music brought to you by: Bobby Brewer on guitar and vocals, Robert Frahm on guitar and vocals. Lee Carroll on Hammond Organ (it s OK Lynn you hardly notice the organ in all the excitement) and Acrosonic piano, Bob Fry on bass, and Aaron Walker on drums. Find this one you do not want to miss it! Nelson Grube 7
