3 LETTER FROM THE PREZ The 11th Annual Louisville Blues-n-Barbecue Festival at the Water Tower takes place on the city's riverfront Friday through Sunday, July 11, 12 and 13. Along with Garvin Gate this is one of our premium blues festivals. KBS members should have received their festival tickets by now thanks to the generosity of the Bisig Impact Group. The headliner for this year s festival is Williamstown, MA native Albert Cummings. Volunteers are needed to assist the bands during the festival. If you are interested and can give a little time please let me know by sending an to prez@kbsblues.org or give me a call at There are two other festivals of note in our area in the next month. For fifteen years the Masters Musicians Festival in Somerset has brought a variety of quality entertainment to South Central Kentucky. From blues to Celtic, jazz to bluegrass they have it all. This year s festival features a couple of blues heavyweights with David Honeyboy Edwards and Pinetop Perkins with the Willie Big Eyes Smith Band. Jonelle Mosser and Kelly Richey will also be at the festival. More information is available online at Just up the river in the Queen City, the Cincy Blues Fest takes place August 1 and 2. The Cincy Blues Society always puts together a great show and this year is no exception with musicians like Watermelon Slim, Lil' Ed, Jimmy Thackery and Gina Sicilia. Check out their website at cincyblues.org. Unfortunately the Cave Run Rock-n-Blues-n-BBQ Festival in Morehead, KY has been canceled this year due to a lack of volunteers. Hopefully they will be able to return in I received a letter the other day from Mark Watson of The Marks. It was a long, rambling dissertation on life as he knows it right now. And Mark is nothing if not a survivor. You look up that word in the dictionary and you will see his smiling face looking back at you. Since late March The Marks have been on a grand world tour. Well, at least our part of the world. They started in Joliet, IL and came to Louisville before heading to St. Louis, Memphis, Jackson, MS, New Orleans, Mobile, AL and Tamba Bay, FL. All of this was prep work according to Mark for their 10th Anniversary show at Zena's Cafe on Saturday, July 19. With this much effort there's no way you can miss it. I hope to see you there. If you have spent any time at a blues show in our area during the last several years, you have no doubt as some time encountered Jeanne Doak. She is a dedicated blues fan and easily identified by the many different hats she wears. Jeanne turns 50 this year and decided to throw herself a party. Not one to do anything on a small scale, Jeanne is getting the Kilborn Alley Blues Band from Champaign, IL to bring their Chicago-style blues to Gerstle's on Sunday, August 3. The party starts at 5:00 pm and no prisoners will be taken. Last month, Voluforms in Jeffersonville, IN started to print our newsletter. In an effort to make sure as many members as possible have their newsletter in hand by the first of the month, we are moving back our monthly reporting date. In the past we have always asked that all band performance dates and articles be into the blues society by the 25th of the month. From now on if you would like something to appear in the next newsletter please have it to us by the 20th of the month. This will insure that we can get Blues News out to you in a timely manner. 4 KBS House Party May 31, 2008 O Shea s Irish Pub This year being the 20 th anniversary of the KBS, the Board decided to do something a little different. The monthly meeting home of the KBS, O Shea s Irish Pub, hosted a house party to benefit the KBS. The venue was partly outside near the meeting room of the KBS. The weather could not have been better. A light breeze (enough to blow the flowers off the trees into Nelson Love Child Grube s hair who was working the door) kept the audience comfortable throughout the show. Admission was $5 to benefit the Society. Our good friends, The Jim Masterson Band started at a little after 7:00 PM as the crowd started to build. Jim s band was a good band to get the crowd into the music and to draw some onlookers from the other areas to see who was playing. At one point Jim was blowing the harp and I had to leave my post (I was working the door and could not see him from the gate) and go over to enjoy watching him play. After Jim s band finished their set, the Pure Gravel Blues Band set up. Mary Wright s (keyboards and vocals) infectious enthusiasm drew even more people from the other parts of O Shea s. Pure Gravel is a great live band. Their set list as well as their playing kept people interested and tapping their feet. There was a real struggle waged that night by the patrons of O Shea s. Several people stopped to come in, hearing the music and had to decide whether to fork out the $5 or save it for beer. The fact that we had a very good crowd, shows that the Blues won out in the end. Unfortunately, all things must come to an end and Pure Gravel had to break down around 11:00 to make way for a DJ playing rock. After staying a few minutes, I decided to retire for the night and listen to blues on the way home. Thanks to O Shea s, the Jim Masterson Band and the Pure Gravel Blues Band for a great evening and a successful fundraiser for KBS. 8 W.C. Handy Blues & BBQ Festival June 2008 We did not get to go down on Wednesday this year as we usually do. And Wednesday was a big night this year with Ana Popovic and Ronnie Baker Brooks. And I do not like missing Thursday night a specialty food night featuring Red Beans & Rice with or without Andouille sausage, gator on a stick and bread pudding. The feature act for this night was the ever popular-ever up-ever-ready to play Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band. But I do wonder what has happened to Rosie LeDet she used to be around for a lot of the Cajun nights but I haven t seen her in years.? Friday was rain, rain, rain if you were near the Ohio river anyplace. We got to the riverfront in Henderson which is both an ideal and idyllic spot for a park to have anything in and a great spot for a free weekend of BLUES music in time to get rained out again. We made it up to WOLF S and had the Catfish dinner and got rained out again and again. Diehards that s us and some others - we were there when THE BEAT DADDYS took the stage and really bluesed and rocked Henderson. Tommy Stillwell is back with them by a freak of nature - CD liner note I do not know what that means but I do know that Tommy Stillwell is one heck of a picker he played some real nice acoustic slide also - and that takes away not one iota from the guy he swapped places with Britt Meecham. I could not tell you the names of songs that they did because we were all watching the sky hoping that the next bout of rain would hold off at least until the DADDYS got finished with their set but alas, alack it was not to be with about a half hour to go lighting streaked towards the earth behind them and the signal CUT the show happened. We heard later that they went to Big Daddy s Boathouse and played a good while longer but we were soaked to the bone trying to get to our cars and knew nothing of it. Saturday was a beautiful day and all the bands played including Jimmy Duck Holmes, Boo Boo Davis, The Organiks, a wonderfully done two hours by Alexis P. Suter from Brooklyn, N.Y. who brought to the stage in addition to her fine regular band two first rate back-up singers a rarity in these days of hard to find travel money and a sax player. The song that stood out for me the most was an almost note for note rendition of the Allman Brothers It s Not My Cross To Bear with added back up singers and a sax break. Big James and the Chicago Playboys were back again from their first appearance in Henderson last year with their big band sound that has got them jobs with such notables as Little Milton, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. Next year we hope to be back for our five day visit at the W.C. Handy Festival in Henderson. YELLOW DOG RECORDS Memphis, Tennessee TUNE IN - YDRRADIO Free tracks streaming 24/7 at: Promotional Sampler #3. 13 tracks are offered here. Highlights include: Eden Brent, Darkness in the Delta, from her CD Missisippi Number One. Bob Brown reviewed this one last month and nailed her perfectly as a great supposed new boogie woogie piano player. Fiona Boyes offers us Chicken Wants Corn from her CD Lucky 13. Spinnin in the Drawer Where country meets blues, meets rock meets gospel. Buy me a ticket, show me to a seat, stick a guitar in my hands. I ll be awhile. What s getting play time, from the hills of Southern Indiana By Nelson Grube From the Big Joe Duskin LP released two years ago we get Beer Drinkin Woman, from his CD, Big Joe Jumps Again!, and lastly, we are offered some Blues-jazzy guitar picking from Calvin Newborn, Newborn Blues, from his CD New Born. The songs that I have mentioned here are ones that I bought the CD s of. 8

9 King Sonic Character Flaws This is the NEW one from the boys of King Sonic. Long awaited and you will not be disappointed. If you have not seen this group live you owe it to yourself to set them knock out at least one set. You will think that Woody s show (WFPK midsaturdaynight) has come to life. If you can jitterbug, do the Lindy Hop, or enjoy dancing to west coast 30 s and 40 s swing, then get down your dancing shoes and go to it. IF I had to choose the best of this CD and that s a hard thing to do I would go with Everybody s Trying to Be My Baby (the old Carl Perkins fav), Whiskey Will, Oh! Regina, I Ain t Drunk, and Let s Jump Tonight. But don t just download those, buy the CD. It s worth it. Marcia Ball Peace, Love & BBQ Alligator Records ALCD 4922 Usual great make your feet move good time dancing music. Party Town, Peace, Love & BBQ, Watermelon Time, My Heart and Soul, I ll Never Be Free, Falling Back in Love With You, Right Back In It, Ride It Out, and I Wish You Well, among others. All great sounds some of us are lucky enough to get better as we age Ms. Ball is living proof of that. Also The Rolling Stones were my first introduction to American Blues. Yup if it hadn t been for their early records I might be reviewing Dick Dale surfing records. Still. To honor their introducing me to the music that I love the best I bought Martin Scorsese, Shine a Light (Polydor Limited). Live from the Beacon Theatre. All the old ones you expect are here Jumpin Jack Flash, As Tears Go by, Some Girls, You Got the Silver, Connection, Sympathy For the Devil, Live with Me, and Brown Sugar and some others to boot. Actually I never thought that I d see some of those oldest ones redone. The song that is getting airplay and the one that sucked me into buying this CD is Muddy Waters Champagne & Reefer. Some say they should retire. They re only 65. I like it. But then, I ll still listen to Dick Dale Surfing songs like Pipeline. Well maybe if Stevie Ray Vaughn is playing on it! Which you can do on Stevie Ray Vaughn & Friends, Solos, Sessions, and Encores (Sony BMG Entertainment, EPIC ). It s after Lonnie Mack s Oreo Cookie Blues, and is between Texas Flood (with Bonnie Raitt) and the ever-popular David Bowie s Let s Dance.
