Cost is $165 which includes the McSpadden Sweet Song Kit and all other materials needed. Join us for a final concert on Sunday evening at 7:00.

2 2017 Workshop Descriptions and Locations Area 1: Main area Area 2: Fireplace section Area 3: Back room Area 4: Sunday School Room Area 5: Porch (Weather Permitting) Friday, August 4 1:00 Meet & Greet, Schedules & Announcements 1:15 Area 1: Great Dance Tunes and How to Play Them with Drive and Creativity: This intermediate hammered dulcimer workshop will focus on repertoire. Let Cathy teach you some wonderful dance tunes that are being played for contra and square dances and to play them in a lively manner using chords, syncopation, droning, and harmonies. Bring a recording device if you have one. Cathy Barton Area 2: Introduction to the Hammered Dulcimer Let Dana and David show you the ropes on the hammered dulcimer. No experience required. There may even be a loner available. Ask David Lindsey. David Lindsey & Dana Hamilton Area 3: Intermediate mountain dulcimer-david Ellison Area 4: Introduction to the Mountain Dulcimer: Brand new to the mountain dulcimer? Let Annette Lindsey show you how easy a mountain dulcimer is to play. No experience is necessary. Don t have a mountain dulcimer yet? See Annette before the class about a loaner. Annette Lindsey 2:30 Area 1: Sacred Harp introduction: Sacred Harp is a method of teaching people to read music by the shape of the note. This will be an introduction class taught by Margaret Wright. You will be spiritually uplifted and full of the joy of singing before you are through with this class! No experience is needed. This is a learning time. Margaret Wright Area 2: Styles of Playing the Hammered Dulcimer This is a listen and learn class. David, Dana, and Cathy will discuss and demonstrate their own styles of playing they have developed over tlhe years. Discussion will center on techniques, hammers, musicality, how they learn a song, and different styles. A great time to ask questions, take notes, and learn.

3 Area 3: The Art of Arranging: (Intermediate-Advanced Mountain Dulcimer) Let Irma show you how to turn a tune into a show piece. Dynamics, tags, intros, breaks, and more! You will take a few simple tunes and practice possibilities. Bring your capo just in case. Irma Reeder Area 4: Guitar Bass Lines (Beginner/Intermediate) Let's fancy up your backup/accompaniment guitar playing with walking bass lines and other embellishments. Class will be tailored to participants playing levels. 4:00-6:30 Break for supper before jam 6:30-9:00 Jam time Yes!! For the first time we have the Community House to jam in until close. No matter what your skill level is, come join in the fun. Saturday, August 5 9:30 Meet & Greet/announcements 9:45 Area 1: Chasing Chords: Do you play chords but don t know the names? Are you stuck playing the same chords over and over? Let s take the plunge! We will take our first position chords and discover where our common chords can be found further up the fretboard. Then we will take turns playing accompaniments to a number of songs so that we can practice with our new friends! Area 2: Absolute Beginning Bowed Psaltery Let show you the ins and outs of playing the bowed psaltery. Loaners are available. See Scott Reeder Area 3: Beginning Mountain Dulcimer Songs Margaret Wright is the professional at taking a beginner and having them learn great songs! Have a great time learning some fun songs with Margaret. Area 4: Learn a Tune Let David teach you a tune. Anyone from advanced beginners to intermediate players.

4 Front Porch: Make a Mouth Bow: This will be fun for all ages! Cathy and Dave will be helping you make an instrument called a mouth bow. They will provide the materials and instruction and you will sand, decorate, finish, and string the mouth bow. Don t miss this fun workshop! If you don t finish during this period, Cathy and David and Dana will be there to help you finish up during the next workshop period. 11:00-12:00 Area 1: Sacred Harp: Margaret Wright will continue shape note singing from yesterday. She will review instruction on how to read shaped notes and then we will be singing sacred harp tunes the remainder of the class time. Area 2: Advanced Beginning Mountain Dulcimer David Ellison Area 3: Learning Chords on the Mandolin Let Dave Para strengthen your mandolin playing by working on your chords and teaching a trick or two. Intermediate level. Area 4: Scottish Ballads for the Hammered Dulcimer 12:00 Lunch!!!! Stay and eat lunch at the Community House. We will be providing lunch again for a small donation. A wonderful way to get to know everyone better. 12:30-2:00 Open Stage: Please sign up for open stage. Everyone knows a song or two. We want to encourage you in your performing and see how much you ve improved from last year. 2:15 Area 1: Fun Rhythm Instruments: Here s where you get to learn how to play the mouth bow that you made! Dave, David, and Dana will be showing you some fun instruments that you will get to participate in. It will be a blast. Don t miss out on this fun workshop! Area 2: Due to the hilarity, fun, and noise of Area 1, we just can t have anything in this area! Area 3: Playing songs with a capo So you bought a capo? How about learning a tune or two using it? Annette will teach at least one song in G and one in A out of the D tuning you usually tune to. It s easy! Advanced beginning to intermediate level. 5 Area 4: New Mexican and Western Tunes This intermediate workshop for the hammered dulcimer will focus on Western fiddle tune repertoire, from the cowboy tunes of Arizona resident Kenner Kartchner to the lilting traditional tunes of New Mexico to dance tunes of the Tohono O odham tribe. We might throw in a Western movie theme as well if time permits. Bring a tape recorder if you have one. Emphasis will be on lots of playing. Cathy Barton Porch: How to Play the Tin Whistle: For the absolute beginner, come learn how to start playing the tin whistle (also known as the penny whistle or Irish whistle), plus a few hints to make it sound Irish. A limited number of whistles will be provided, or bring your own whistle in the key of D. 3:30-4:30 Area 1: Banjo Songs and Tunes from Grandpa Jones Join Cathy and Dave as they sing and play songs made popular by Grandpa Jones and Cousin Emmy who taught Grandpa how to frail the banjo. Bring your banjo and learn a few tricks from Cathy. Or come to listen and sing along with Cathy and Dave. It will be an enjoyable and entertaining hour for all. Area 2: open due to possible high volume level of Area 1 Area 3: Chords, Melodies, & Harmonies: Advanced Beginners and up. Have fun playing tunes while reviewing the basics. Let s play songs that use more of the fretboard, practicing timing by playing rounds, practice reading TAB as we play in parts. Irma Reeder Area 4: Learn a Tune: Let David and Dana teach you a fun tune. HD Advanced beginning to intermediate level. 5:00-6:00 or later if possible Concert with Dave & Cathy, Dana and David, Annette and Judy, Scott and Irma, Margaret Wright, and David Ellison Jamming after the concert if possible. Sunday at 2:30: Hobbies in the House: David and Dana will start a week-long workshop on building a mountain dulcimer out of a McSpadden kit. They will continue the workshop Monday through Thursday from 9:30-11:30 (and can

6 extend to Friday if necessary). The price is $165 to cover all materials. David and Dana will step you through all the building process. You will end up with a nice, playable mountain dulcimer.
