2 Notes from our President, Steve DeLap JUST WHO IS BILL STAINES, ANYWAY? As you might be able to tell from this Folk Notes front page, Bill Staines is coming to Subud Hall on Friday October 8th. If you re wondering just who this guy is, the following is his official biography with some of our own observations. After touring and playing concerts for over 41 years, you would think that musician and songwriter Bill Staines might think about slowing down, but that s just not the case. Bill continues to perform more than 175 shows a year and drives close to 70,000 miles getting to them. He is one of the most durable and beloved singers on the folk music scene today. Staines has twenty-six recordings to his credit and has written over three hundred songs, many of which have been recorded by the likes of Peter, Paul, and Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Glen Yarborough, and Jerry Jeff Walker. His music is sung at campfires and folk music gatherings, in homes and churches, all around the country. Songs like All God s Critters, The Roseville Fair, Child of Mine, and River, have become folk music classics. (One of our local favorites is Sweet Wyoming Home included on Bill s latest CD Old Dogs.) On stage, Staines is an intimate, compelling performer, out of the folk scene of the 60 s, encouraging his audience to sing with him on his chorus songs. He will mix in traditional tunes with his own contemporary folk ballads. His humorous tales of life on the road and observations of everyday people provide an entertaining blend of story and song. It s interesting to note that Bill, an excellent guitarist, plays the guitar left-handed, that is upside down and backwards ala Jez Low or Elizabeth Cotton. I have always wanted to bring something of value to people with my songs. I think that is important, to try to write beyond myself, to write to the great things that we all experience in our lives. For Bill, that is what folk music is all about--a music rich in the human experience and spirit. Bill has recorded two children s albums, The Happy Wanderer and One More River, both of which have won the coveted Parents Choice Award. His music has appeared in a number of films, including the HBO series Deadwood, Return of the Secaucus Seven, and Off and Running with Cyndi Lauper. Page 2 Staines has released two songbooks: If I Were a Word, Then I d be a Song published by Folk Legacy, and Music to Me published by Hal Leonard Corp. An illustrated book of his song All God s Critters was published in 2009 by Simon and Schuster with illustrations by talented artist Kadir Nelson. Bill s memoir, The Tour, was released in Nanci Griffith once wrote, Bill Staines has been my hero since He carries on where Woody left off, carrying on the tradition of stories and characters you wish you knew. When do you think it will be time to retire? someone asked Bill. He answered, In the words of my old friend, the late Tommy Makem, about ten o clock tonight. Though Bill passes through the west coast almost every October, we Sonoma County folks seldom get the chance to see him in our own back yard. Come see and hear him. You ll be glad you did! There certainly is room for more campers. Obviously we need to continue to get the word out about this unique event. This year we added a new feature to the weekend. Old Time Music was played on Friday night at Lauren s restaurant across the street from the fairgrounds. Listeners were treated to a set by Suzy and Eric Thompson followed by the Knuckle Knockers. Saturday morning through the afternoon, folks attended many fine workshops about playing OTM on various instruments. Great practitioners including Eric Thompson, Evie Laden and John Pederson taught the workshops. It was also nice to see more locals attending the square dance on Saturday night. Intelligently engineered for the discerning musician Editor s Eye essays correspondence books scholastic & newsletters Laurie Reaume (707) lauriereaume@pon.net Do you want to advertise in FolkNotes? The Sonoma County Folk Society Board of Directors is very pleased to have Shubb, The Last Record Store and Jackalope Records advertising in our 2010 FolkNotes newsletters. If you are interested in promoting your business here, current rates are unbelievably low. For example, a business card sized ad is only $30/year, and is printed in all 6 issues! You can also opt for a one-time quarter-page ad for $25, or a half-page (either vertical or horizontal) for $50. For details, contact Steve Hogle at steves32@sonic.net I d like to thank some of our key volunteers. Janet Dove, treasurer of the SoCoFoSo who acted as the volunteer coordinator, Colleen Arroyo also of the folk society and the CBA for keeping track of the books. Steve DeLap for providing the sound for the square dance, and special thanks to Karen Heil of the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention for coordinating volunteers for the workshops. We will be working on a few changes for next year. Most notably a web site devoted specifically for this event to make getting the word out and buying tickets simpler. We ll keep you posted.
