2 About the Instructors: Bill Taylor has been a valuable presence on the mountain dulcimer scene since the late '80 s. Prior to that, he performed for many years at Dollywood, appearing at the Grand Ole Opry, playing guitar and singing. His music styles range from bluegrass and old-time to jazz and rock, enhanced by his expressive vocals. Bill s teaching is inspired, organized and supportive. He also happens to be one of the most respected builders of quality mountain dulcimers. During the school year, Bill teaches environmental science to sixth graders and fourth graders in Pittman Center, TN Joe Collins The 2007 National Mountain Dulcimer Champion, Joe has played dulcimer since the 1970's. Joe is a highly respected instructor and teaches and performs across the country. His tabulature books, with accompanying CD's also He has recorded 5 CDs, writes dulcimer tablature books and builds dulcimers. His award-winning folk singing and humor are a favorite at concerts. Joe has worked in Religious Education for most of his professional career and now serves as Associate Professor of Religion at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC Marsha Harris enjoys many genres of music and composing. She plays mountain, bowed, and Banjammer dulcimers, in addition to Native American flute, fiddle and tenor banjo. She enjoys traveling to various festivals to share the experience. She shares music through teaching and playing for various events such as weddings, concerts, schools, theater productions, and festivals. Marsha has received numerous awards at old time fiddle festivals and the North Carolina State Fair Folk Festival for her mountain dulcimer playing abilities. Native American flute has allowed more free expression and has lead to additional collaboration on various music projects. Nancy Galambush - Nancy began playing the mountain dulcimer about 17 years ago when her husband, JC Bradshaw, built one for her. Since then she has taken classes from many of the top dulcimer instructors in the country. She continues the tradition of the dulcimer by passing her knowledge on to others. She plays in the group Flat Mountain Dulcimers, for which she also dusted off her cello to add it's mellow sound to the group. Nancy also plays with Dolce Dulcimers, along with Edie Harrison, Barbara Strickland and Carolyn Roberts. Margit Roberson - Margit spent many hours enjoying music made by her husband David, but felt that she had no musical abilities. Once a dulcimer was placed in her lap 15 years ago, she found that she has previously undiscovered musical talents. She has now expanded her talents to playing mandolin. Margit has taken classes from top instructors and passes on her mantra of "practice, practice, practice" to her students. Margit is also a member of Flat Mountain Dulcimers, along with her husband David and Nancy.

3 Barbara Strickland - An elementary school music teacher for over 30 years, Barbara has played dulcimer for 13 years. She has attended numerous classes on playing the mountain dulcimer and is always eager to help others learn. While teaching elementary school, she obtained cardboard dulcimers for her students and introduced many children to the musical world through the dulcimer. Barbara plays with and coordinates Duplin Dulcimers in addition to playing with Dolce Dulcimers and Waterbound. Carolyn Roberts - Carolyn has been playing dulcimer for 7 years but clearly demonstrates what practice can do for your playing skills! In addition to playing, she is very knowledgable in using the computer program Tabledit to write out professional looking tab and in using tablets to coordinate one's tablature so that those big books full of tab can be a thing of the past. Carolyn is a retired art teacher, crafts beautiful dulcimer jewelry and plays with Dolce Dulcimers, Creekside Dulcimers and Waterbound. 5 Morning classes CHOOSE ONE Beginners This class continues all day. (Do not sign up for other classes if you sign up for Beginners.) Which side of the dulcimer is up? How do you tune it? It s easy. You ll be playing tunes in no time. You won t leave without information on how you can continue to play after the workshop. You do not need a musical background or to be able to read music. Call (252) or Nancy (jcng@esn.net) to reserve a loaner dulcimer if needed. Beginner students stay in the same class all day. Nancy Galambush and Margit Roberson Instructors. Advanced Beginners Smooth out your strumming and get that rhythm right! After learning to play easy melodies, students at the advanced beginner level often need some help keeping an even rhythm and feeling comfortable with their strumming. This class covers rhythms used in fiddle tunes, as well as other rhythms used in waltzes or hymns/gospel music. Depending on the needs of the students, this class may also cover other advanced beginner techniques, such as using more than one finger on the left hand, using basic chords and reading basic musical notation. Barbara Strickland Instructor. Combining Your Picking & Strumming (Intermediate & Above). This workshop will focus on picking out the melody in-between and in combination with the strums that give body to arrangements. We ll use exercises to develop effective strum/flatpicking technique and two tunes to incorporate the technique, an original waltz and a challenging O Carolan piece entitled Lord Inchiquin. Bluegrass on the Dulcimer ( intermediate & Above) We will start by looking (listening) at the parts of a Bluegrass band and how they work together, then we will learn how we can use the dulcimer to create the different sounds, tempos and and emphasis to tap into the Bluegrass sound. We will then learn many old tunes and songs, instrumentals and with words. Bill Taylor, Instructor Embellishments for the Mountain Dulcimer (Novice and above) Add interest to your music by utilizing hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmonics, vibrato, muting, and flatpicking across the fretboard. 6 CHOOSE TWO AFTERNOON CLASSES, Note: The tablet class can be taken either for Part I alone or for Parts I and II. You may not take Part II without having taken Part I. 1:45 Afternoon Classes Session 1 - Choose 1 Jam Session! ( Advanced Beginner and up ) Easy tunes, chords, and what to do when you get lost. A "must" class for those who do not yet feel comfortable joining a jam. Bill Taylor, Instructor Making Arrangements (Advanced novice and up) This workshop takes a simple tune and progressively takes students through several different ways to play that tune in different octaves and keys, all in the same tuning. It also shares some basic ways to make transitions between keys. The purpose is to help students learn skills that will enable them to make their own arrangements of tunes they love to play. Students should be pretty proficient in playing chords before taking this one. Joe Collins, Instructor Waltzes (Novice and above) No rushing through ¾ time. Enjoy playing together with duet parts. What s a better dance than a waltz? Bring a capo. Marsha Harris, Instructor Put Your Tab on Your ipad Tablet! - Part I (any level) Using an app and the camera on your tablet, you will be able to scan your paper tabs. You'll also learn how to download tabs from Internet, how to share tab with each other, and how to find it quickly when needed. Carolyn Roberts, Instructor. 3:00 Afternoon classes Session 2 - choose one Playing the Blues (Novice to Intermediate) There are many kinds of the Blues and we will explore as many kinds as we can, from Country Blues, 12 bar blues, to perhaps a bit of rock. We will learn about the "blue notes" and find how to find them, and then learn as many songs as we can in the time we have. Bill Taylor, Instructor Focusing on Basic Chords (advanced beginner and up) a workshop on playing in DAd out of major chords. Includes exercises and songs to improve one s ability to change chords efficiently. Joe Collins, Instructor Celtic Time (Novice and above) A polka, an O Carolan waltz, a jig, and a hornpipe. We will incorporate playing across the fretboard. Marsha Harris, Instructor

7 Put Your Tab on Your ipad Tablet! Part II You must have attended Part I in order to attend this class. This class will be to go over specific problems you are having, such as rotating music, combining pages, using Dropbox which can be downloaded to the Kindle and Samsung tablets, etc. Carolyn will help you with any special problems you are having.
