We'll work on the how to's and then apply them in a few pieces. You'll be surprised at how easy it can be, and what fun you'll have! 2. Butch Ross (All levels, Mountain Dulcimer): Roots of Rock-n-Roll: Chords - Learn the Chords and Chord Progressions of many of the great tunes golden age of rock-n-roll 3. Doug Berch (Intermediate/Advanced Mountain Dulcimer): - We will cover the right and left hand techniques of finger picking and play a variety of tunes using these techniques. We will be working with knowing which fingers to use on the right hand for finger picking, strumming without a pick, fingering for the left hand, using hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides and more. 4. Nancy Clark (Beginner Folk Harp): This session is for folks who are beginning or have just played for a few months, probably with very few or no lessons. Nancy will show you how to see patterns in tunes. Basic exercises for different numbers of fingers all coordinate with the melody of the tune. In addition, there is an original tune by Nancy for two fingers. Played slowly, it is a finger exercise. Parts will be layered so all can play. 5. (All levels, Bodhran): You will learn bodhran anatomy, tuning, all about tippers, and basic playing technique (including use of the left hand to create tone and pitch). Have a new experience exploring dance rhythms, learning about bodhran makers and purchasing tips, bodhran players and a discography of recordings. He will have a few bodhrans and pizza boxes so that participants can have hands-on experience. 6. Andy Young (Beginner/Novice Hammered Dulcimer): The County Clare Dulcimer -Playing Traditional music is so much more than just banging out the right notes. The treatment a musician gives to a tune can identify it with a country, a region, or even an individual musician. Clare is a place in Ireland whose fluid, unhurried style of music reflects its people and geography. This workshop will use this elusive dialect of Irish Music to explore how to make the hammered dulcimer sound more 'Irish'.) 7. Lorinda Jones (Beginner Mountain Dulcimer): Learn, or review the basics of playing in DAD tuning. Simple tunes, reading tab, playing by ear, and falling in love with the dulcimer! 8. Martha Richard (Hammered Dulcimer): We will tune up the dulcimers, locate different keys, and play a simple song all over the dulcimer. 10. Susan Trump (All levels, Mountain Dulcimer): DAD tuning-rounds, Duets and Ensembles-Something for Everyone! What can be more fun than playing dulcimer with lots of different parts? Playing together is a great way to develop your listening skills and create something larger and way more fun than playing by yourself. 11. Butch Ross (All levels, Ukulele): Contemporary Tunes for Ukulele - With the Ukulele's resurgence a number of prominent artists have been using the Ukulele in recent hits songs. We'll learn how these artists approach the Ukulele. 12. Doug Berch (Novice Hammered Dulcimer): Understanding and Using Chords This class will cover learning to play the chords most used when playing hammered dulcimer. You will also learn how incorporate chords into your playing. 13. Nancy Clark (All Levels Folk Harp): In this workshop, you will learn three "Sacred Harp" songs which you can play as solo harp. In the class, the group will divide up and play the individual lines together to experience the sound of a room full of "Sacred Harps." In addition to the tenor (melody), soprano-descant and bass lines, there will be an added "bell" part in keeping with the original shape note harmony. 15. Andy Young (Intermediate Hammered Dulcimer ): The Great American Songbook Beneath Your Hammers - If the names Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Cole, Carmichael, or Mercer get you waxing nostalgic, wishing you could play tunes like Over the Rainbow, Paper Moon, Cheek to Cheek, Blue Skies, and more - then this is the workshop for you. We'll explore the common chord progressions behind such standard melodies, and how to play them on the hammered dulcimer. 16. Lorinda Jones (Novice or Adv Beginner Mountain Dulcimer): Incorporating simple chord shapes into melodies, and simple 2 part songs and answers to lots of questions to advance your playing to the next level. 18. Greta Gillmeister (Novice/Beginner Tin Whistle): Whistle this! - DAD Tuning. In spite of its apparent simplicity there is a lifetime of learning and enjoyment to be had with this 6-holed pipe we call the tin whistle! As with any instrument a proper foundation is key to success and that is what we ll seek to lay down during this class, starting with the basics fingering, scales, octave transitions, breathing, simple tunes, etc. 19. Susan Trump (Novice Mountain Dulcimer): Harmony Shapes- Using one or two simple two-finger chord shapes you can create a very rich and full sound for a lovely effect! Beautiful tunes made EASY! 20. Butch Ross (Intermediate Ukulele): More Chords for Ukulele - Most Ukulele chord books just show you a single voicing for each chord, but there are several different ways to play even a C chord on the Ukulele. This class will introduce you to them, and even explain why you might want to use them. 21. Doug Berch (Intermediate/Advanced Hammered Dulcimer): Getting The Most Out Of Slow Tunes We will work with ideas and techniques to embellish and bring out the beauty of slow melodies. Ornamentation, harmony, and other techniques for accompanying the melody will be covered. You should be comfortable playing chords and some arpeggios if taking his class. 22. Nancy Clark (All Levels, Folk Harp): Catchy melodies and drone chords make it easy to learn by ear or off the page. Medieval music is a nice way to expand your repertoire quickly. Some of it is contemplative and chant-like music, but you will also learn a new kind of dance music the Ductia, the 13th century Italian dance, precursor of the 6/8 Irish jig. We will learn and play some tunes together with an added bonus of accompaniment by sparkling tambourine and triangles. 23. 24. Andy Young (Novice Hammered Dulcimer): The Blues Beneath Your Hammers - This workshop offers an introduction to playing the Blues on hammered dulcimer. Participants will learn the basic 12-bar blues, blues scales, several styles of back-up (including piano, walking bass, delta), and how to improvise over a blues progression. 27. Greta Gillmeister (Intermediate/Advanced Tin Whistle): Tunes and beyond! - How do we take our playing to the next level? This class will use tunes as the primary vehicle in which to work on thoughtful phrasing, breathing, tone, ornamentation, and variation. 28. Susan Trump (Advanced Mountain Dulcimer): Beginnings, Endings and In-betweens - DAD tuning. Let s spruce up your arrangements by learning to add interesting introductions, interludes and endings to your tunes and songs. 29. Butch Ross (Advanced & up, Mountain Dulcimer): Roots of Rock-n-Roll: Rhythm - Learn the basics of rhythm from the early days of Rock-n- Roll. Some rhythms will be harder than others, but you'll be surprised by which is which. 30. Doug Berch (Novice Mountain Dulcimer): Playing Fiddle Tunes - So you know how to get your dulcimer in tune and play a few tunes. Let's take the next step and play some Old Time fiddle tunes. Learn how to master the bump-ditty strum while learning some popular traditional tunes. This workshop will combine using tablature with some tips to help you play by ear. 31. Nancy Clark (Novice/Intermediate Folk Harp - Other instruments welcome): Appalachian Fiddle Tunes for Harps and Other Instruments - Learn finger-friendly Appalachian fiddle reels. Tricks to allow playing at a pace that sounds fast without being difficult. She'll also be covering how to play these tunes with other instruments and learning their chord structures to be able to "jam" by ear. Companions with other instruments, especially fiddles or dulcimers, are encouraged to attend (All tunes will be in D, G, or A, and their relative minors.) 32. Danny Shepherd (Washboard, Spoons, etc): Folk Percussion. Play Washboard, Spoons, and other instruments. You do have rhythm & I ll help you find it. 33. Participants will learn exciting arpeggios characteristic of Gypsy music, 4-note jazz chords, Lots of secrets to playing chromatically and improvising over chord progressions. 35. When both are played together the sound is lovely.
