Four Shillings Short! Friday, November 6th at 7:30 pm Subud Hall, 234 Hutchins Avenue, Sebastopol The word eclectic gets overused, but the term describes precisely the music of this husband-and-wife duo. Four Shillings Short refuses to restrict themselves to established musical genres. If you ve never heard their music, be prepared to be wowed by their unique performance. Is the music Celtic? Is it Indian? Is it neo-celtic? Is it jazz? Is it folk? Does it have rock overtones? Yes, to all of these. Their music has been called a blend of Celtic, Middle Eastern (with Christy s sitar), Brazilian jazz, blues and topical. Aodh Óg Ó Tuama was born in Ireland, and studied Medieval and Renaissance music in college. He received a music fellowship to study at Stanford University in Wife Christy Martin began playing sitar at age sixteen, continuing with traditional folk music in the 1980s. (Note: she plays a sweet hammered dulcimer.) On November 6th, we will enjoy their unique and refreshing music, as these two delightful people gift us with their success in musical experimentation. They are a lively duo, and have the ability to keep us fully engaged, as they bring a successful balance of musical types, tones and rhythms. Here at Subud Hall, we can expect to hear them play the dulcimer, sitar, Medieval and Renaissance woodwind instruments, a mandolin, a banjo, a mandola, spoons, bodhran, tamboura, tinwhistles and various percussion toys. The end result will be a dynamic concert, with lots of fun and opportunity for the audience. Will there be love songs? political songs? witty songs? ballads? contemporary tunes? Yes. Do they sing beautiful harmonies? Can you understand their lyrics? Will they play any songs you know? Will they make you laugh? Yes, yes, yes and yes. On Friday, December 11th, Sonoma County Folk Society presents Bruce Molsky in an intimate solo concert at Subud Hall, 234 Hutchins Avenue, at 7:30 for an evening with perhaps the most impressive and influential old-time fiddler around. He may be from the Bronx in NYC, but has mastered the music of Appalachia. Bruce is a remarkable musician, whether playing his fiddle, guitar or banjo. Add to that a wonderful voice, and the excitement happens. Bruce has recently been performing with Mary Ann Kennedy, a well-known Gaelic musician, and they were both part of Fiddle Rendezvous on tour throughout Scotland. Bruce s other musical ventures cover several instruments and many genres, including Delta blues and Eastern European music. Another of his talents is guitar finger picking, which is outstanding! When Bruce sings, the tone is low-key, smiling and unassuming. He becomes the song. Come join us on December 11th for an evening with this master of the fiddle. Sing Out! Lest we think that Jake Shimabukuro invented the ukulele Ernest Kaleihoku Kaai ( ) The first Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso, Ernest Kaai, made appearances all over the world. Not only a gifted performer, Hawaii s Greatest Ukulele Player organized ensembles, composed and published music, and ran the Kaai Ukulele Manufacturing Company. He was undoubtedly the foremost ukulele authority of his time and had a profound understanding of the mechanics of playing, for which he published the first ukulele instruction book in Although known for promoting the ukulele as a featured instrument in the Hawaiian orchestra, his sophisticated fingering, picking, and stroke styles also inspired the modern establishment of the ukulele as a solo instrument. Ernest Kaai, arguably the most influential musical figure in Hawaii in the first quarter of the 20th century, was a gifted performer on many instruments including the mandolin, guitar and ukulele. He was also an impresario, teacher, publisher, and recording artist. Known in Honolulu as the Father of the Ukulele, Kaai was said to have been the first musician to play a complete melody with chords. Kaai wrote the earliest known ukulele method, The Ukulele, A Hawaiian Guitar and How to Play It, published in 1906 by Wall, Nichols Co. of Honolulu, with a revised edition published in The method contains notation conventions, including chord frames, rudimentary tablature, and a hierarchical chord nomenclature that has since become associated with Hawaiian music. It is probable that Kaai invented these notational styles for ukulele. Kaai left Hawaii in 1923 to tour the Far East and Australia, and eventually settled in Sri Lanka. In the mid-1930s, he planned to open a Hawaiian Village in Shanghai, China, but the war forced him to flee and he returned to Hawaii in He moved to Miami, Florida, in 1941 and incorporated the Kaai Music Studios in He died in Miami in From: The Ukulele Hall of Fame Museum Page 4
