1 Mrs. Buder s 5 th Grade Class Newsletter October Edition By: The students of room 242 Arts Pop, Pop, Popping To Life By: Olivia and Haley Arts pop, pop, popping to life with lion art being entered into the PTSA directories! First we started out with our name art and turned our names into a beautiful masterpiece. We were all very excited about the first art project of the year. Even a few people volunteered to say a couple things about art It was fun, I love art Mira age 10. I liked name art because we got to use pastels. Janie age 10. Next Newcastle Elementary entered some quite creative lion art to put in the school directory. Almost the entire school participated in this art project!!! Then our class made paper doll art and turned them into autobiography stories about ourselves. And a coincidence is that they all look like the people who made them. Get a sneak peak down below of a couple kids stories the made! In a few weeks we are looking forward to Tracy Hasslemen teaching us a new style of art!!!!!!

All in all, Join Reading Olympics, and before you know it, reading will give you the biggest vocabulary in your class, and you ll never want to stop. We hope you read lots!

2 Calling all Readers! By Jessalyn Nguyen and Elyssa Minton Are you a completive reader? Join the Reading Olympics! Hear from two different sides of the story! First, Reading Olympics is a fun reading race to complete as many books as you can, and you get rewarded for all your work. You can make your own chart to keep track of all your work. Your prizes can be awards and trophies. You fill out a form, telling the teacher what book you ve just finished, the author, and how many pages were in that book. You also need to get a parent signature. Joshua Getty s opinion is I certainly, completely dislike books, and I think that the president should ban books in every state for eternity. Joshua Getty does not like books as you can see. Emily Chow on the other hand, thinks Books are exiting and they educate you. They are AMAZING!!! I think Josh is a crazy nut brain. Emily loves books and Reading Olympics. Reading makes you smarter everyday! Jessalyn Nguyen Rampaging Recesses By: David and Ryker Elyssa Minton Soccer is spiraling down, down; down it tragically might be banned for the year! Soccer is getting out of control. Ryker, the co author says, Soccer is as of late banned because people are not following rules. People are starting to quit because they are mad. Which results in a low amount of players for the people who are playing by the rules which isn t as fun. Some the 5 th and 4 th graders are outraged at the lack of sportsmanship. Some are purposely not following the rules and are hogging the ball. Also, kids are not showing respect to anyone or anything. Some are using inappropriate and mean language. Also, kids are not bringing the equipment in to the equipment shed. So, now you see why soccer might be banned for a long time. Hopefully, we can fix it up and make it fun again!

The Crazy Lives of Our People By: Natalie S. and Brooke U. People, people everywhere in our shoes and in our hair!

We made one page for each age; the pages were shaped like us. Then we put all of the pages into a book. On the cover we designed it to look like us. We choose a skin color that matched us first.

Then after we were all finished we got to share them with the class, not ever one shared but a lot of us did. It was fun to learn about other people, Madison says.

3 The Crazy Lives of Our People By: Natalie S. and Brooke U. People, people everywhere in our shoes and in our hair! There were 12X the amount of people in the classroom when we did this writing project! In the project we wrote about each age of our lives and drew an illustration for it. We made one page for each age; the pages were shaped like us. Then we put all of the pages into a book. On the cover we designed it to look like us. We choose a skin color that matched us first. Then we made an outfit, hair and then shoes. We were able to get all the materials from the art project. Then after we were all finished we got to share them with the class, not ever one shared but a lot of us did. It was fun to learn about other people, Madison says. Like a lot of us she learned a lot of new information we probably would have never knew about each other. So, there really were people, people everywhere in our shoes and in our hair! The main characters are Nick Allen, who is in fifth grade and invented the word frindle, and Ms. Granger the teacher who thought the idea was silly. Then they had a little fight that turned into a big fight that was all because one word.frindle. They both had people on each side. Nick had his mom and Mrs. Granger had the principal. Then a newspaper person came and asked for nick and Mrs. Granger to be in the paper. Mrs. Granger and the principal did not approve, but she saw a picture of the class holding frindles and stared to change her mind. Mrs. Granger said, When this nonsense is over you will receive a very special letter. 10 years later Nick was very famous for his word and Mrs. Granger sent him the letter and it said, Nick, if you are reading this the word frindle is in the dictionary, and it had Mrs. Grangers special fountain frindle in it. That is the end of the story Frindle

When you are running, try as hard as you can to get the sticks, because if you try you will succeed. Next, Gymnastics is a sport where hard work pays off, especially at the vault boxes.

4 P.E.: What Kids Crave By: Sasha and Josh We will tell you what kids like about P.E. and nothing else. First, Capture the Sticks is a fun game that is very exercising and you have to have lots of energy to do it. When you are running, try as hard as you can to get the sticks, because if you try you will succeed. Next, Gymnastics is a sport where hard work pays off, especially at the vault boxes.and, the good part is, that you only need flexibility to do it. If your flexible, that is good news to you. Then, Hockey comes in being a good sport for all ages. It s very challenging and very fun. You should work really hard to try to get the puck into the goal. Finally, Basketball comes by at the end of the year with kids shooting and trying their best to get the ball into the hoop.pe is the place where kids at Newcastle Elementary get active. How Fast is Your Reaction? By: Alex and Mira Today s Math Article is about a fun way to find the average by playing a game! The game involves a few things; 6 people or more, pencil, paper, and a calculator. You have to get all the people you have in a big circle. Once the game starts you have to squeeze the persons hand to the left of you as soon as the person to the right squeezes your hand. Make sure that no one messes up the game when you start it for example someone thinks the game started already and people starts to squeeze the other people s hands. You have to do this five times, every time the squeezing reaches the last person in the circle he has to count up how many seconds it took. Here is a quote from Ryker Vold It was really awkward holding onto other guys hands but it proved a good point finding the average. After you finished playing the game, you have to count up all the seconds (From all of the five times) you have to add them up and divide by five and you have your average! Don t squeeze hands too hard!) Special Events at Newcastle! By: Emily & Madison There are so many special events going on at Newcastle Elementary School such as selling books, collecting and the option to be on a show called House Hunters. We are selling entertainment books that are full of coupons for many different places. We say, That is feels good to be able to raise money for the school in a fun way. The theme this year is Ice Age. If you sell one book you get a green eyed light up monster. If you sell 3 books you get Jamba Juice. If you sell 5 you get a free entertainment book. And if you sell 10 you get a limo ride to McDonalds. This helps the school earn a lot of money. Mrs. Buder, her class and family are able to be on a show called the House Hunters on channel called HGTV. The class can go as long as their parents agree to let them be on the show. Part of the class will be on a minor

part of the show. Jessalyn and Elyssa said, It will be our fifteen minutes of fame! we are all excited to be on TV. Our school also collects box tops to raise money. Each box top is worth 10 cents.

The top class will earn a pizza party and we had one in third grade. The second leading class gets a smoothie party that we got last year in fourth grade. Every year we raise a lot of money for the school. Newcastle has a lot of fun events going on every school year. Everyone enjoys these fun events that Newcastle provides for us. Some of the events also raise tons of money! Mathematician Masters - How I mastered exponents. By: Matty I comprehended exponents which I thought was very difficult. I heard about it in 4 th grade. However, I slightly understood it. Thankfully, I got used to them at the end of the year. Now that I did more in 5 th grade, I fully understand it now. For example, 5*5*5 is equal to 5 3 in exponential notation. You repeat multiplication with the same number. I am looking forward to keep using more exponents. But when I get to middle school, I am sure that it is going to get more complex [and for your information, complex means pretty hard]. I m wondering if in middle school that you have to write decimals in exponential notation. For example, Since now I know a lot about exponents, I am ready to explore my next topic, my favorite, the lattice method! Is Golf Physical Education? By: Nathan Imagine if you could play golf at school and still be fit. Well that s real at this school. Golf IS Physical Education. Golf builds up the core muscles when you practice your swing. You will need strong hands in order to keep the club from slipping, but not too tight. Says Mathew Lily. Golf has a lot of walking which is great exercise. The last thing is it will improve your hand eye coordination. It s Fun to Play. You can play with friends. Set goals for yourself like making a birdie on a par 5. You could have the best day of golf in your life by getting out there and playing golf. Some people are negative about playing golf like Natalie Surber who said Golf s boring. It takes time to learn the sport golf. When you learn how to play then it can be very fun. It s a Lifetime Sport. Even if you re beginning to walk or 78 years old, it can still be fun to play. It can be your whole job to play your favorite sport. Tiger Woods started when he was 2 years old. He was so good he was on a show when he was 2. Golf is something that you can do for fun and we are very fortunate that we have golf here at Newcastle Elementary.
