Foreword Imagne your thrll of accomplshment when you receve proof copes of your soon-to-be-publshed book n the mal. Bask n the glow of satsfacton from people approachng you at a conference wth a copy of your book for you to autograph. Thnk about the personal achevement when you re ntervewed for an artcle based on your book. Imagne the publc acclam that comes wth beng a publshed author. Your publshed book provdes more credblty than anythng else does because the power of the prnted word s omnpotent. Throughout hstory, people have always placed a hgher value on books than any other form of communcaton. Ths s why authors are so hghly valued n our socety. People want to beleve that f you nvested the tme to wrte a book, you must know somethng of value. Most lkely you probably do. You know the content of your book better than anyone else: after all, you dd the necessary research and pulled t all together wth your unque personal experences. You ve honed your wrtng to reach a specfc audence nterested n learnng more about the topc you re an expert on. Your publshed book brngs more credblty to whatever you are wrtng about. Your authored book makes you an authorty! Successful novelsts are masterful storytellers who skllfully talor ther plots nto compellng and entertanng books. Everyone enjoys sharng a good story when your book s publshed, the novel they re talkng about could be the one you wrote. Nothng s more memorable than a well-told story.

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR There are many reasons for authorng a book. Some people seek fame and fortune, and some other folks smply have a personal msson to be expressve through ther publshed words. The shared commonalty of all authors s they love the creatve challenge of connectng wth readers beneftng from the author s appled wordsmthng sklls. In ths brave new world of book publshng, every wrter has the opportunty to take the leap of fath to publsh hs or her book and make t avalable for publc consumpton. Now s the tme to fnsh wrtng the book you have been thnkng about or workng on and take the frst gant step to becomng a publshed author. Ths book wll explan exactly how to do t. Dan Poynter, author of Self-Publshng Manual

Introducton Welcome to Infnty Publshng. And let me say what an amazng tme n our world s hstory t s for you to become a publshed author! There s an old sayng you are what you read. I beleve t may be more approprate to say you are what you wrte! If you re lke many newly mnted authors, your book, when t s fnshed, wll energze you and most probably change your lfe and the lves of others, as your book becomes a permanent addton to the knowledge tree of orgnal authored works. Ths s the age of the author, a new era where people lke you and mllons of asprng wrters and authors can publsh wthout lmts whether you have a personal need to leave your lfe mark on the unverse, a professonal need to publsh a book of expertse to attract more customers, or the desre to fnally put to use your classcal tranng as a wrter to launch a masterpece of fcton to the masses. For people of all ages and cultures, the dea of someday wrtng a book has now become a realty. And t s happenng wth speed, as countless new ttles are beng publshed, revewed, and purchased by readers around the world. The Internet has brought the world to your fngertps where you can wrte, publsh, and market your book from wherever you are wth a computer and a connecton to the dgtal cloud. Advancements n prnt-on-demand, onlne dstrbuton, ebook readng devces, and the way we socalze onlne wth servces lke Facebook and Twtter have forever changed the way we thnk about books where we buy them, how we read them, and how they get publshed. In ths New Book, New World of Publshng,

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR the opportunty for you to tell your story and do t credbly and affordably has never been more compellng. Wth a publshng partner to support you and a global marketplace of buyers, you need only be the most relevant to your reader to acheve success as a publshed author. Relevance s kng n today s world of keyword search algorthms from the lkes of Google and Amazon and other search engnes and onlne bookstores. Thnk of t as a contnung process of matchng the thoughts and actons of your reader wth the content n and around your book. From the embryonc stage of dea creaton, to the moment a reader begns searchng for your book or topc of nterest, relevance s a factor. The good news s that you can now desgn and create a relevant foundaton for your book that ncludes a unque cover desgn, ttle, and all types of content related to your book, whether n prnt, audo, or ebook. Mxed-meda books are the future and you as an author can now affordably offer your book to readers n the format they prefer. Some people are always on the go and only have tme for car audo, others prefer dgtal ebooks that they can carry wherever they are, and for the majorty of readers, provdng a qualty hardbound or softcover book wll contnue to satsfy ther needs. New capabltes that nclude vdeo and other devce-drven features are here, and there are more on the way. Readers have preferences, and just as we have our favorte restaurants, each of your readers has hs or her preferred readng format and place to purchase books. Bookstores are near and dear to many of us who wrte and read books. They along wth other brck-and- mortar stores wll stll be wth us, but the acceptance and growth of onlne bookstores s staggerng, and we are only at the tp of the ceberg! Book buyers around the globe are now n control they may see your book n the revew secton of a magazne, but more than lkely they wll be searchng for a specfc topc of nterest, readng a blog, or seeng an artcle onlne that wll spark ther dscovery of your book. v

INTRODUCTION Many of these new storefronts are connected to specalzed nche content that wll nterest a very targeted group of readers. These smaller markets, or nches, are often overlooked by the oldguard publshers because of ther sze, as they need a larger number of buyers to recover ther costs. The New Book, New World of Publshng has created an mmense opportunty for books from nfnte orgns, no matter the sze, as the cost of publshng and marketng to these smaller audences has been reduced. Addtonally, wrtng shorter books on very broadly appealng topcs s an opportunty n the new publshng revoluton, as readers are lookng for ways to learn and be entertaned n smaller slces of tme. Marketng your book n ths new publshng landscape has developed nto an ncredble opportunty for you and those who are motvated and ready to embrace technology and the Internet. Creatng relatonshps, partnershps, and communcatng your message on a global scale can now be acheved wthout ever leavng your favorte char. By combnng tradtonal marketng strateges and the power of the Net, the globe s your playng feld where only the amount of tme n a day may lmt what you can acheve. It s my hope that you are as excted as we are about the future of publshng. You are at the begnnng of a journey at a tme when you lterally have the world by your fngertps. Focus on what you love and pck a publshng partner you can trust to help you to do the rest. We welcome the opportunty to earn your trust n ths New Book, New World of Publshng. Sncerely, Infnty Publshng v

Part 1 PUBLISHING WITH INFINITY In the ever-changng world of book publshng, selectng the best publsher for your book s the most mportant decson you wll make n determnng the successful future of your book. We want you to understand the mportant authorfrendly advantages that you wll beneft from as an Infnty author. You, the author, retan all rghts; however, by enterng nto our publshng agreement and payng a one-tme setup fee, you are authorzng Infnty to be the publsher of your book, whch enables us to make your prnt, ebook, or audo book avalable for sale to the publc through our farreachng global channels of dstrbuton. You wll have the peace of mnd of knowng your book wll never go out of prnt. Infnty dffers from the more tradtonal manstream publshng houses n ways that clearly beneft our authors. Ths part of our gudebook explans each of these major areas of postve 1

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR dfferences and why our publshng model s a good match for your soon-to-be-publshed book. The Infnty Dfference Freedom of expresson Suppose you had receved an advance from a manstream publsher for the exclusve rght to publsh your book. The publsher would then own the content and be free to edt or modfy t wthout your consent. In manstream publshng, the publsher s vson of the book s content always prevals. At Infnty, you own all rghts, hold the Lbrary of Congress copyrght, and have complete edtoral control over the content of your book. We want authors to retan all rghts to ther content. We recognze that, as the author, you are far more famlar wth the content and the target market you wrote your book for than we could ever hope to be. Our experence has shown that when authors own the content they are more motvated to make good thngs happen wth ther books. Open access to publsh and promote your work We don t requre your book to be submtted to us by an agent, and we have no gatekeepers makng arbtrary judgments about the marketablty of your book. We won t le to you ether; we won t try to seduce you nto publshng wth us by proclamng your book wll sell thousands of copes no one can project the future sales of a book. We do openly acknowledge the fact that the success of every book we publsh depends entrely on the merts of the book and the promotonal efforts of the author wth the many changng facets of the publshng ndustry, ths fact, regardng the merts of the book and the proactve nvolvement of the author to promote the book, s ncreasngly true of all publshers. Snce Infnty s start of busness n 1997, our contnung msson s to provde a publshng and dstrbuton platform second to none that s readly accessble for all authors to publsh almost any book, and we are supportve of our authors efforts to promote ther books. 2

PUBLISHING WITH INFINITY The opportunty to proft from your work Infnty profts as you do from the sale of books. It s our frm belef that our authors deserve a large share of the proft when ther books sell, and the opportunty to earn hgher royaltes for the lfe of a book that never goes out of prnt. Tradtonally publshed authors start to earn royaltes only after ther book has sold n suffcent numbers to earn out the advance pad, and wth the hgh percentage of books that don t sell enough copes to cover the advance, many authors never see a penny n royaltes. As an Infnty author, you are pad royaltes on your frst book sold provdng you wth the mmedate opportunty to begn recoupng your publshng nvestment. Tradtonal publshers pay royaltes quarterly due to ther need to manage ther cumbersome return polcy for bookstores. As an Infnty author, you wll often enjoy a hgher royalty rate on books sold, and royaltes wll be reported to you on a monthly bass. Infnty s value-added prcng enables authors of nonfcton books, and novelsts wth an establshed followng of readers, to ncrease the retal prce above the suggested retal prce, whch s based on compettve prcng of softcover trade books. When t comes to prcng, we are guded by the author s knowledge of hs or her target market and the cover prce of smlar manstream books on the topc. A non-exclusve publshng agreement As an Infnty author, you have the freedom to publsh anywhere you please. If you get a better offer or f you become unhappy wth Infnty for any reason, or no reason, you are free to leave wthout a hassle. Authors publsh wth Infnty under a non-exclusve publshng agreement that allows the author to wthdraw from ths author-frendly arrangement at any tme. Upon wrtten notce of cancellaton by the author, the book can be removed from our unque book-publshng system n a matter of a week. We place no encumbrances on your book, as other nontradtonal publshers mght try to do. The rghts to the tradtonally publshed book wll only revert back to you upon your wrtten request, and then, only after the publsher declares the book offcally out of prnt. Infnty publshes books at the pleasure of and by the 3

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR authorzaton of our authors. We don t fence n our authors; thus, we have a vested nterest n keepng them happy wth our unequaled style of publshng and customer servce. Unlke tradtonal houses, we don t te up the rghts to your next book wth a frst rght of refusal. When you re ready to publsh your next book, we trust the outstandng servce you ve receved wll make Infnty your obvous choce. An author-frendly envronment After more than a decade of open communcatons wth our authors, Infnty has earned an exceptonal reputaton n the ndustry for settng the Gold Standard for customer servce. Our publshng model s transparent and our contact wth our authors s contnuous. Real, lve people located here n the Unted States answer the phone when authors call n to ask questons or place book orders. E-mals are welcomed and we do our best to reply n a tmely manner though at tmes we may need to do a bt of research to provde correct and defntve answers. Infnty s Author s Advocate newsletter s our offcal monthly connecton wth our authors; ths s how we keep you abreast of what s what, what s happenng, and what s hot for promotng books. We blog, Facebook, Twtter, and post relevant updated nformaton at and Conference.com, n addton to postng every newly released ttle on Infnty s popular onlne bookstore at OnTheWeb.com ( Infnty s the founder, producer, and sole sponsor of a very actve socal-networkng webste wth a free and open membershp for all authors, wrters, poets, and book lovers and t s totally free of thrd-party commercal advertsng. But, of course, members are welcome to promote ther books, partcpate n forums, post portfolos of ther work, share crtques, brag a bt about promotonal achevements, and exchange deas just lke you d do n any communty of frendly people sharng smlar nterests and desres. 4

Infnty s dedcated to the sale of your book whch means publshng your book n whatever versons best surpass the expectatons of your readers and/or lsteners. Increasngly, book sales are shftng to electronc books, or ebooks, and we can now format your book perfectly for an ever-expandng array of popular ebook readers. Our ebooks are compatble wth all major readers, such as the Kndle, Pad, Nook, Sony and many others. Professonal custom-desgned color covers Cover desgn plays an ncreasngly mportant role n sales and have been shown to ncrease wth a compellng front and back cover and professonal nteror desgn. Infnty s unmatched custom cover and desgn capabltes provde real mpact and are unequaled n qualty, affordablty, and optmzaton expertse. Many of our compettors wll allow you to construct your cover usng a template, only offer front-cover desgn, or lmt the 5

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR desgner s tme and/or type and number of mages you can nclude. Usng templates requres a lot of guesswork on your part and there s no way to tell what the result wll be. You may end up wth an nferor cooke-cutter desgn and have to pay a premum for a much more expensve package that allows your nput. Prnt-on-Demand an educated choce When you publsh your book wth Infnty you make an educated choce to be part of the changng dynamcs sweepng across the publshng ndustry. In fact, n 2009, there were more on-demand publshed ttles than those from tradtonal publshers. If you publsh wth Infnty, your book s not self-publshed. You ve granted Infnty permsson to publsh and dstrbute your book n exchange for royaltes on each book sold. There s only one publsher of record of your book and that s Infnty; however, at tmes we wll co-publsh wth another publsher or nclude a prevously truly self-publshed author s publshng company s house name. Infnty s one-tme setup fee s for Infnty s professonal servces rendered to add your submtted book fle nto our book-publshng system and seed your book s basc nformaton nto establshed dstrbuton channels. The ISBN dentfes Infnty as the publsher of record. The only self nvolved s the self-promoton that s necessary to generate a buzzng nterest n your Infnty-publshed book. In realty, much lke a tradtonal publsher, Infnty covers the cost of producng at no cost to you for the on-shelf nventory we mantan for all Infnty ttles ths assures that all ordered books (whether we have nventory on hand or are produced to order) are usually shpped wthn 7 to 10 days from recept of the order. Nor do we charge our authors for the cost of producng and shppng books drectly to Amazon. Just lke other manstream publshers, we accept returns from bookstores at no cost to Infnty authors because we underwrte ths program that makes our ttles more acceptable for bookstores. It also facltates authors dong nstore book sgnngs, knowng ther books are n stock to sell n conjuncton wth the events. Infnty s proft comes from sellng books not from sellng publshng servces of questonable value. 6

PUBLISHING WITH INFINITY Maxmzng your promotonal effort We recognze the mportance of our authors promotonal efforts to spread the word about ther books. It s these efforts that convert reader nterest nto ncreased word-of-mouth and account for accumulatng sales. At Infnty, we support these efforts n numerous ways, begnnng wth our hgh-speed dgtal prntng, onlne dstrbuton, and low-cost ebook readers. Through these advances, we better support our authors promotonal efforts and open up more book dstrbuton opportuntes for all. Even though we have publshed over sx thousand Infnty ttles, we gladly revew and make cost-effectve suggestons to marketng plans put together by our authors. We lsten when authors want to share ther marketng deas wth us. In fact, we offer a free blog for any of our authors to share ther marketng successes and nformaton about ther books. Some of our serous and motvated authors attend Infnty s annual Authors Conference or sngle-day semnars. Durng our Gatherng of Authors conference the last weekend n September, we have natonally acclamed publshng professonals as our keynoters and expert presenters. The entre focus for the weekend s on teachng authors more savvy ways to provde effectve promotonal exposure for ther books. New to our educatonal schedule, we are proud to have been selected by Pearl S. Buck Internatonal to delver semnars at ther wrtng conferences on the changng ndustry and our author-orgnated publshng method. Extendng the lfe cycle of your book Another way we support your effort s by producng your book n the shortest possble tme and extendng ts lfe cycle. In tradtonal publshng the pre-publcaton phase can take 12 to 18 months or longer and then the book has a bref wndow of a few months to produce projected retal sales. If a book s not generatng ts antcpated sale, t soon goes out of prnt. At Infnty, t s the reverse: our pre-publcaton phase s usually completed n just 6 to 8 weeks. Once the book s approved for sale by the author, the book s nstantly made avalable for sale to the publc, and because the book wll never go out of prnt, t s 7

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR producng sales year after year and earnng contnuous royaltes for promoton-mnded and motvated authors. At Infnty, our operatng premse has always been, and always wll be, that each one of our ttles has the potental to become a steady revenue producer for ts author and for Infnty. Never n the hstory of Infnty have we removed a book from our publshng system because of low sales. We frmly beleve n every author s rght to have hs or her book avalable for purchase by the publc. That s the essence of our author-frendly publshng model that clearly sets Infnty apart from all the other publshers. 8

Part 2 YOU RE THE AUTHOR. YOU OWN THE CONTENT. CONTENT IS OMNIPOTENT. Content s omnpotent, and Infnty authors create and control the content. At Infnty, wrters enjoy a more expressve style, knowng ther creatons wll be publshed verbatm as wrtten. There s a freeng artstc dfference when you re not wrtng to appease an agent nto temptng nterest from a manstream house wth a possble openng n ther schedule at the end of next year. Three Types of Content to Consder When you re sellng or buyng real estate, the three most mportant factors are locaton, locaton, and locaton. The locaton of real estate s soldly fxed n place and not lkely to be relocated wthout a natural earth-changng act of God. When you re wrtng, sellng, or buyng a book, the three most vtal elements are compellng content, focused content, and refned content. Content s flud, always changng through the wrtng sklls of the author creatng a book, forever depctng more shared concepts wth each turn of the page, endlessly beckonng the 9

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR reader to learn more from the wrter s words captured between the covers. Compellng Content Hook a reader s nterest to buy your book. An attractve cover mght frst attract the eye, but t s the promse of what s between the covers that wll sway the reader to buy. More recently, cover text has become even more mportant as search engnes and onlne bookstores look at ttles and other content to help buyers search for ther area of nterest usng keywords. Focused Content Fulfll the promse of delverng to your readers what they want to learn about the topc of your nonfcton book, or the entertanng make-beleve realty of the plot n your novel. Whenever focus strays, there s a clear and present danger of losng your reader. Refned Content Be sure to focus on the fne art of makng your book as error free of typos, grammatcal ssues, and tangled thoughts as t can be. Readers expect to enjoy a smooth-readng book that has been completely purged of annoyng word bumps and obnoxous mstakes. Indeed, t s the perceved value of the content to your reader more than anythng else that determnes the success of your book. Ths secton explans the ns and outs of content from Infnty s vewpont and why certan types of content should be avoded. Content Areas to Watch There are certan uses of content that wll not be accepted and wll usually mpede the tmely release of your book or cause t to be wthdrawn from publcaton. We do reserve the rght to remove books from Infnty s book-publshng system and dstrbuton channels f a post-publcaton problem develops. Plagarsm Copyng from others s a major no-no that could result n legal acton for copyrght nfrngement brought by the orgnal author of the work n queston. Borrowng materal or buldng on the publshed work of other authors wll get you n trouble unless, 10

YOU RE THE AUTHOR pror to publcaton, you have secured wrtten permsson from the author of the prevously publshed work, and n some cases permsson from ther publsher, to use specfcally defned portons and references about ther work wth clearly acknowledged credts. Lkewse, the unauthorzed quotng of even a few lnes of someone s publshed work or work-n-progress wthout ther wrtten permsson s unwse. A menton n the acknowledgement wth the belef the orgnatng author wll apprecate the exposure of beng referred to n your book s also not acceptable. Ltgous Wrtng and Content Naturally, t s essental that you avod anythng that mght consttute lbelous statements that could result n legal actons aganst you keep n mnd that damages are awarded on the perceved harm done to the affronted person s reputaton and loss of ncome. Beng found gulty of lbel could be costly. Copyrghted Song Lyrcs Usng copyrghted song lyrcs n a book most often nvolves wrtten permsson and can be costly. In some cases, you may be requred to pay n advance a percentage of projected book sales to the songwrter, composer, and performer. The expense for usng a few lnes from a popular song could quckly total several hundred dollars pad out before the frst book s sold. Unless song lyrcs play a vtal part n your book, they are best to be avoded or be prepared to pay dearly for them. Song ttles and book ttles may be used only as ttles wthout permsson under the far use prevson of US copyrght law. Fact-Checkng of Content and Source Materal Some books requre fact-checkng to verfy that facts stated n the book are truthful and correctly presented. Securng permsson to use the portons of the work by others and fact-checkng your book s solely your responsblty. Ths can be a prolonged and tedous process that Infnty does not nclude n ts offerng. We do, however, requre that you provde us wth approprate documentaton regardng granted permssons pror to the release of the book. 11

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR Famous People, Places, and Real Thngs Most novelsts nclude references to real people, lvng or dead, to add touches of realty to ther plotted storylne. Publc fgures, elected offcals, and famous people are usually okay to make menton of, as long as t s done n a postve way that sn t demeanng. Always employ common sense when usng the names of real people n novels; don t assume they wll be flattered by beng ncluded n your book. If you ve based created characters on people you know, t s wse to obscure ther dentty by changng how they are portrayed n your novel. When n doubt, err on the sde of cauton, by leavng dentfyng features and unque trats out that could be lnked back to the person you know. Places are pretty much far game. It s okay to wrte, The famly fleeng from the bad guys stopped at McDonald s for lunch, or The Unted flght was late landng at PHL due to a weather delay. Thankfully, the days have passed when the name of the arlne had to be somethng made up lke Transnatonal Arways, and McDonald s was reduced to beng referred to as a popular fast-food restaurant. Of course, f you re wrtng about the plane beng nfested wth rats, t s best to nvent the name of an magnary arlne. Lkewse, f you re wrtng about the ghost that haunts the drve-up wndow t s best to conjure up a dfferent name for the restaurant. Real thngs often have brand names attached to them. Here, common usage usually prevals, so t s okay to wrte, Hs drnk of choce was Peps, rather than referrng to t as soda pop, whch was always seen as rather lame. However, avod usng brand names n the ttle of your book unless wrtten permsson has been secured. Some corporatons get rather testy about havng ther chershed and proftable brand names ncorporated nto the ttle of books. Referencng brand names n your text only n passng s usually okay, but defntely not as an op-ed opportunty to bash and slam the product or corporate brand. Artwork and Photographs Do not use any artwork or photographs wthout comprehensve permsson from the artst or photographer, and n some cases permsson of dentfable people shown n the photo. People can get very senstve about havng ther lkeness publshed n a 12

YOU RE THE AUTHOR book especally when they dscover ths transgresson after the book has been publshed and s beng dstrbuted. Downloadng photos and graphcs from someone s webste for use n your book or on your book-dedcated webste s unacceptable even f there s no apparent notce of copyrght, the work could stll beneft from copyrght protecton. If you ve had your author s head-and-shoulder photo taken by a professonal portrat photographer, you wll need the photographer s wrtten permsson to use any copyrghted photo of you n the promoton of your book most lkely, you ll need to pay a usage fee n addton to what you have already pad for the photo shoot. Unless of course, you have a free-use certfcate from the photographer, then you can do as you please wth your photo. Your Book Publshed Word-for-Word Just as You Wrote t Wth due consderaton gven to the potental content problem areas explaned above, Infnty s goal s to publsh your book precsely the way you wrote t and submtted t to us for publcaton. You, the author, have total control over your book from cover-to-cover as long as the book formattng conforms to our producton requrements. (See part 3 for nstructons.) When you publsh your book wth Infnty, you are grantng us permsson to publsh and dstrbute your book you retan all rghts. Therefore, we can t change a sngle word n your book wthout your expressed wrtten approval. The only excepton to ths polcy s f you utlze Infnty s optonal copyedtng servces. Even then, the author stll has the fnal say on any questonable changes before approvng ther proof book for publcaton. Of equal mportance, because there s no queston as to the ownershp of the book, only the author can determne f and when to sell off move rghts, mass market rghts, foregn rghts, etc. Our Frst Amendment Guarantee Infnty s a Frst Amendment Press; ths means we wll publsh almost any book on any topc, n any genre, by any author. As a responsble publsher, however, we reserve the rght to reject content such as, but not lmted to, hate materal, pornography, 13

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR explotaton of chldren, wrtngs advocatng or depctng llegal actvtes, slanderous clams, and zealous rants. We wll declne the publcaton of work that n our opnon could result n legal acton aganst the author and publsher. Unfortunately, we lve n a tme where people fle seemngly frvolous lawsuts f they beleve they can proft from such actons. Upon recept of your book fle and Publshng Agreement, f Infnty s decson s not to publsh, a full refund wll be promptly made and your book fle returned. Freedom of Expresson We soldly support freedom of expresson tempered wth common sense. As an author, you have complete freedom to tell your story your way, to approach nonfcton topcs wth your unque angle, to be as creatve as you please wth your prose. Some publshers mpose house style and usage sheets for ther authors to adhere to; such requrements are not mposed on authors publshng wth Infnty. However, we strongly recommend that all wrters follow the accepted gudelnes n style and usage manuals, n addton to workng wth a professonal edtor, to make ther book the very best wrtng t can be well-edted books generally sell better. Professonal Copyedtng of Your Words Professonal copyedtng s the essental fnshng process before publcaton that wll purge your content of typos, grammatcal errors, and fx punctuaton problems. Ths sn t the tme to mpose on the Englsh teacher you met at a PTA meetng a few years ago, or ask a wrter frend you know from chattng wth onlne, to take on the copyedtng task you need a professonal copy edtor wth experence n edtng work for publcaton. Don t beleve you can edt your own work or trust your spellchecker to connect typos actually that should be correct typos but a spellchecker program wouldn t catch t because t s only checkng the spellng and not how the word s beng used. Perhaps the most embarrassng thng an author can hear from a reader s Do you know you have a typo n the second paragraph on page 36? 14

YOU RE THE AUTHOR The copyedtng of your book s performed before the manuscrpt goes nto producton and you wll have the opportunty to approve all changes. Of course, you wll also be responsble for all changes you make or sgn off on as they appear n the proof copy of your book. If the edtor has any questons about what you are tryng to express, you wll be able to revew queres and make any correctons you wsh to make n the manuscrpt. Ths s a valuable process as t allows you to learn from a professonal and mprove your wrtng sklls. Whle we can t requre you to have your book professonally copyedted, we hope you wll take advantage of ths opportunty to make your book the best t can be. Fnsh Wrtng Your Book Wthout a doubt, the most challengng and, yes, even extremely frustratng determnaton an author needs to make s to know when the process of wrtng (plus rewrtng and rewrtng some more) has reached the end pont. Perhaps you ve shared your fnal draft wth famly, frends, and peers for comments when a book s a work-n-progress nearng completon, t seems everyone wants to play edtor and make changes. Yes, you ve carefully consdered ther nput, and maybe even ncorporated some of ther worthy suggestons, but ths s not the tme to embark on one more tedous rewrte. As helpful as these folks mght be, they re only gvng you ther opnon on what they d do dfferently wth the content of your book. If you, the author, are reasonably comfortable and satsfed wth the sequence, pacng, and flow of your content, and corrected the typos your reader frends have ponted out, then, by all means, proclam your book ready to be publshed. 15

Part 3 MANUSCRIPT TO SUBMITTED BOOK FILE You ve heard the term what you see s what you get and that s very true of ondemand prntng. The formatted book fle you create for submsson to Infnty s bascally the way your book wll appear n prnt word-for-word just as you wrote t. However, before we can work our converson magc that produces the specal dgtzed fle we prnt from, you must frst assemble all the parts of your book nto one sngle document that begns wth your ttle page and ends wth the last page of your book. You Have Three Submsson Optons at Ths Pont n The process 1. Use our Authors Concerge servce and one of our Author Advocates wll walk you through the entre publshng process. (You receve a 10 percent dscount usng ths servce.) 2. Send us your fnshed book fle (wthout formattng) together wth a sample nternal and chapter page desgn or photographs of a desgn you lke. 3. Format the document yourself as descrbed below and submt your assembled book fle. 17

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR Preparng for Self-Formattng For those who wsh to do t themselves, ths next secton provdes a broad step-by-step gudelne for formattng and assemblng the book fle. As stated above, our experenced desgners wll provde ths formattng for you; however, we fnd that t sometmes benefts authors to at least do a porton of the work, f only to get an dea of how ther manuscrpt wll look n the trm sze they ve selected for ther book. Ths can be an exctng process, after wrtng and edtng your book on screen for weeks and months on end. Fnally, seeng t n book layout can be a reward that s worth the effort. Regardless of what word-processng program you used to wrte your book, the bascs are relatvely the same for successfully completng the some assembly requred part of the make-ready for publcaton process. Infnty s producton department mantans an extensve array of word-processng programs rangng from frst versons through the most recent, updated versons. There are several rather prcey commercal software programs on the market, especally for creatng the layout and desgn of the text pages of books; however, most of these programs are complex, have a hgh learnng curve, and requre an understandng of the basc elements of effectve page desgn. Of course, you could hre a professonal graphc artst to do the layout and desgn of your book, and employng ther servces wll provde you wth a completed book fle properly formatted for submsson. But why do that when Infnty wll do t for you? If you are unsure about how to complete any of the followng nstructons, clck on your word processor s Help tab for drectons on how to accomplsh these basc procedures. Below, we offer fundamental nstructons for the Mcrosoft Word 2007 program. For an example n Word 2007, perform a save on all of your fles before begnnng the formattng phase. Open a new blank document and clck on Page Layout on the top of your open document menu. It wll dsplay Margns and clck on the arrow to offer optons to revse your margns to Infnty s specfcatons (bottom for Custom Margns ). 18

MANUSCRIPT TO SUBMITTED BOOK FILE Establsh a page sze for your book n the Margns secton, under Custom Margns/Paper : 5.5 x 8.5 the ndustry standard for trade books; 8 x 8 for more creatve forms of expresson, such as poetry, photo studes, chldren s books, and collectons of work; 8.5 x 11 preferred for school textbooks, nstructonal manuals, and busness topcs. Under the Paper tab n the Custom Margns, set page sze for a 5.5 x 8.5 book (for nstance), wth margns at least 0.7 left/rght and 0.6 top/bottom; and at least at 0.8 for all margns on 8 x 8 and 8.5 x 11. For addtonal whte space the margns can be ncreased slghtly, but not less than the margn measurements shown here. Whte space brngs breathng space for paragraphs pages wth small text and paragraph ndents, nstead of a smaller bt of paragraph spacng, appear crammed together to lower the prnted page count, but fal at beng an nvtng page to read. The second step s to smply copy-and-paste ndvdual parts and/or chapters of the manuscrpt nto one large book fle you are about to create. Save your fnal manuscrpt fle before you select all or hghlght the entre text of the fle and clck copy. Open your newly created blank book fle, poston the cursor n the upper left-hand corner at the top of the page and select specal paste and from the drop-down menu select Formatted (RTF- Rch Text Format) ths wll nsert the text nto your new book fle document wthout copyng edtng notes, embedded codes, etc. Contnue copyng and pastng one chapter after another, untl all parts of your book fle have been pasted n place on your newly created document. Clck on Select All and select the type font and pont sze keep baby boomers n mnd wth specfc attenton pad to the ease of readablty and select a pont sze that s 11 or 12 ponts wth approprate paragraph spacng. The text of most books are hyphenated and justfed, so now s the tme to select these optons and apply them to your book fle. Save and close your manuscrpt fle and save your newly-pasted-together book fle. The thrd step s a bt more nvolved. If you don t have a ttle page, dedcaton, Foreword/Preface/Introducton, Table of Contents, Acknowledgments, etc., comprsng the typcal front matter, nsert the approprate pages n front of your frst chapter and add the 19

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR necessary text for these pages at ths tme wth a page break at the bottom (at the end of all text) of each page. If your frst chapter doesn t begn on a rght-hand page, you mght want to add a blank page to make that algnment happen. At the concluson of the frst chapter, add a page break, and contnue on to the end of each chapter, addng page breaks. For the fourth step, open the Header and nsert page numbers the program wll automatcally number your pages n sequence; there s an opton to retan the sequence but not number the frst page of chapters. Don t worry f the page numbers don t algn perfectly wth the Table of Contents Infnty s producton team can fx them and everythng wll be correct when you receve your proof books (make a note to ask for assstance wth page numbers n your submsson cover letter). Whle the Header edtng wndow s open, you can add a runnng header n the top margn area, such as the author s name on the left-hand page and the book ttle on the rght-hand page skppng addng a header on the frst page of each chapter. The fnalzng ffth step s fne-tunng your book fle. Now s the tme for you to add photographs, graphcs, llustratons, or desgn elements such as the fancy ones used to enhance chapter pages, end-of-chapter pages, or tastefully sprnkled as needed throughout the book. There s no charge f you scan, crop, scale to sze, and poston your artwork approprately on the proper pages just where you want t to be. Ths can be accomplshed by clckng on the nsert tab of your word processor f the postonng doesn t algn as you want t to, just clck undo and try agan. If you become totally frustrated or just don t want to do ths work, we can do the postonng of photos and artwork for you; however, f our producton department handles ths task accordng to your wrtten nstructons there s a $10 charge per tem. It s best to provde dgtzed copes of the artwork f possble; however, f you provde us wth hard copes, all photos and artwork wll be promptly returned after you have approved the fnal proof copes of your book. Even f your mages or artwork are embedded n your book fle, t s always wse to nclude copes of your dgtzed photos and artwork on the CD or flash drve wth your submtted book fle. 20

MANUSCRIPT TO SUBMITTED BOOK FILE If you are embeddng mages or artwork n your book fle, make sure that they are formatted as a 200 dp JPG. To make sure that the mage does not have to be reszed, you should make sure that your mage s not larger than 4.1 x 7.9 for a 5.5 x 8.5 book sze, 6.4 x 6.4 for an 8 x 8 book sze, and 6.4 x 9.4 for an 8.5 x 11 book sze. If you are gong to have your book ndexed, add the keywords to use for ndexng to a blank page at the end of your book fle, but do not attempt to have the ndexng by page numbers accomplshed untl you have the fnal proof copy of your book because the pages could change durng the copyedtng and converson process. It mght be better to hre a professonal ndexer to handle ths mportant last phase of your book. We do not provde ndexng servces; however, we can dovetal the ndexng of your book nto the fnal producton process of your book at no addtonal cost. At ths pont n the process, f you do a page prevew of your newly assembled book fle, what you see wll be very representatonal of how your book wll appear n prnt. You are, of course, free to hre your own professonal graphc artst to enhance the layout, desgn, and appearance of your book. Most graphc artsts wll provde you wth an estmate based on your book fle, and a lnk to ther webste wth samples of recent work. They wll develop a unque desgn that works well wth the genre and/or topc of your book f your book s beng ndexed, the book desgner wll also dovetal ths procedure nto the desgn process, so the end product wll be correctly ndexed wth approprate page numbers. The completed book fle from the graphc artst wll be ready for submsson to Infnty. Of course, f you are the creatve type and famlar wth book layout, your own desgn s welcome. Recently, Infnty has added a full-color nteror opton. If you plan to publsh your book n full or partal color, you have the opton of embeddng full-color photographs and graphcs n your book fle. Keep n mnd that dgtally prnted color s what s typcally referred to as pleasng colors meanng t s not gong to be a perfect match to the specfc shade of red or hue of blue you mght envson but the dgtally prnted colors wll be pleasngly close. Ths also apples to prntng of our custom-color 21

Our custom-color covers are always pleasng to the eye, although there may be some slght varaton n the cover colors prnted at dfferent tmes. Submttng Your Book Fle to Infnty You have several optons when you save your book to a CD or to a USB flash drve. If you are absolutely certan everythng n your book fle s precsely the way you want t, you can submt t as a PDF and we wll not change a thng. Wth your book fle saved as a PDF, however, we cannot perform any copyedtng, correct formattng problems, or convert your prnted book fle nto ebook versons. Therefore, f you are submttng your book fle as a PDF and you want an ebook verson, you wll need to nclude a copy of the word-processor document that was the orgnal source fle used to create the PDF book fle. The most common submsson format s as a word-processng document fle. Almost any wordprocessor-document-saved book fle wll be compatble wth Infnty s dgtal converson process for prnted books and ebooks. In addton to the book fle saved as a word.doc fle and/or a PDF, you wll also need to provde the followng fles on your CD or USB flash drve: a 30-word hgh-mpact blurb about your book a 100-word synopss descrbng the essence of your book a 100-word author bography provdng facts about the author that are relevant to the book Also very mportant s the 1,000-word excerpt that s usually the frst chapter of a novel or the Table of Contents wth a selected chapter representatonal of the nonfcton book. Just as we can t change a word n your book, we cannot edt these descrptve tems for creatng nterest n your book on the Internet. If you exceed the word counts, your text wll abruptly end at the specfed word lmts. It s essental that you do not exceed the specfed word counts. You can nclude a.jpg (mage) of an optonal head-and-shoulder photograph of the author, wth permsson to use documentaton from the photographer, and photo credt lne f approprate. The 22

MANUSCRIPT TO SUBMITTED BOOK FILE author s photo on the back cover s recommended because readers lke to see what the author looks lke. After everythng has been saved to the CD or flash drve for submsson, take the tme to verfy that each fle opens and the entre book fle s actually present, along wth the supportng fles about your book. Nothng s more frustratng for an author on the verge of havng a book publshed than to receve a call from Infnty wth the news that fles won t open. The last thng to do s to make a backup copy of the CD or flash drve you are submttng. Now you have a duplcate CD contanng all of the essental components of your book to keep n a safe place, just n case somethng happens to your CD or flash drve whle n transt. Congratulatons! You have successfully assembled your book fle and t s ready to submt to Infnty. We are frequently asked f t s acceptable to submt work va e-mal. Although we do accept e-mal submssons, we encourage authors to download ther work to a CD or flash drve and submt va regular mal, f at all possble. Ths s because e-mal submssons are more susceptble to ssues of transmsson or loss than fles safely stored on a CD or flash drve. Should you wsh to submt va e-mal, consult your Author Advocate or n-house support person for specfc submsson nstructons. Regardless of how you choose to submt, we recommend savng all documents. 23

If you have trouble completng your agreement or just wsh for addtonal support, your Author Advocate can help you complete the agreement by phone and even take your credt card nformaton and process your order. Therefore your eproof book wll ultmately be a representaton of what your book looks lke when we have t open on our computer and have fxed any obvous problems. We wll make the necessary correcton to your book. 49 Part 5 THE INFINITY POST-PUBLISHING ADVANTAGE The nneteen procedures n the prevous secton are an approxmaton of the publshng and dstrbuton process your book travels through when your book fle arrves at Infnty. Wth some publshers and all book prnters, ths s where ther process ends, except for order processng, order fulfllment, and a quarterly accountng of books sold. Infnty provdes all these typcal publshng, dstrbuton, and admnstratve functons, but n addton, we offer unequaled post-release author support to provde the framework to help generate exposure, drectly contrbutng to sellng more books. There s no doubt, t s your ongong promotonal effort that wll help you get your book n the hands of readers. Producng books nhouse and mantanng an on-shelf nventory provdes us wth a tmely advantage for prompt customer book-order fulfllment. The best way to evaluate what your customers wll experence s to order a book drectly from the publshers you are consderng to publsh your book. Compettve Prcng We establsh a suggested retal prce based on the actual page count of the book. The page count s the bass for calculatng the producton cost of dgtally prntng and bndng the book. Thanks to our hghly sklled and dlgently effcent producton department, our retal prcng s comparable to the cover prce of softcover trade books released by more-tradtonal publshers. Compettve prcng enhances your book s postonng and acceptance n the marketplace. Many authors usng other selfpublshng servces to publsh ther books sadly dscover after the fact that ther books retal prce mposed by the publshng servce s at a much hgher prce than smlar books, and an unattractve prce to ther readers. Value-Added Prcng Ths demonstrates our trust n the ablty of nonfcton authors, and novelsts wth an establshed followng of readers from prevously publshed novels, to establsh a far and realstc retal prce hgher than the suggested prce for ther books. Although content s kng, t s stll generally counterproductve to prce a book consderably hgher than smlar books on the same topc regardless of the perceved worth of the propretary content. It s wse to stay wthn the range of the other books. The amount of value-added prcng determned by the author s always an ncrease n whole dollars (begnnng at no less than $2 hgher) and s subject to fnal approval by Infnty. The author s proportonal royalty s 75 percent of the value-added ncrease ths s n addton to the standard earned royalty pad on the suggested retal prce. Standard Trade Dscounts and Return Polcy Infnty sells books to retal bookstores at 40 percent off the cover prce, guaranteed to be returnable for one year from the nvoce 36

In the event books are returned, we smply debt prevously pad royaltes from future-earned royaltes. You wll never receve a bll from Infnty to make your book fully returnable, nor wll we ever nvoce you for prevously pad royaltes receved, on returned books. Books purchased through Amazon s Advantage program are sold to Amazon at a 55 percent dscount, lkewse nfnty ttles fulflled through Ingram are also sgnfcantly dscounted and NOT RETURNABLE to Infnty. Clarfyng appled dscounts s mportant for you, our author, because the percentage of royaltes pad by Infnty s determned by the actual sellng prce of the book whch s the dscounted cover prce. Retal Sales Infnty pays you 30 percent royaltes on orders placed drectly wth Infnty by retal customers orderng by phone, fax, or through BuyBooksOnTheWeb.com. We accept all major credt cards, and personal checks, whle money orders/certfed bank checks are requred for overseas purchases. Most orders are shpped r wthn 7 to 10 busness days. We have the ablty to track every order shpped va UPS whle n transt. Author Dscounts Newly publshed authors receve a frst-order 50 percent dscount off the suggested retal prce; thereafter, author purchases are at 40 percent off the suggested retal prce. However, authors placng orders at any tme for 250 or more books are always gven a 50 percent dscount off the suggested retal prce. We pay UPS ground shppng on all orders for 20 books or more and only charge a $4.50 handlng fee per shp-to address. Infnty pays a 10 percent royalty on all purchases by the author. We mean t when we say we pay monthly royaltes on all books sold ncludng your books purchased by you. Many authors proftably sell a sgnfcant number of books after they ve gven a speech to an audence nterested n ther topc. Sponsorshp Dscounts We can accommodate corporatons, assocatons, and groups makng bulk purchases of your book by extendng a specal dscount and nsertng a sponsor s page. Books on topcs related to 37

Sponsors may order from 100 to 10,000 books and specal arrangements can be made to tastefully poston the sponsor s logo on the front and back cover. Our low mnmum order makes ths a cost-effectve way for communty groups to sponsor your book as a fundrasng tool ths opton provdes postve exposure for you and s for a good cause. Promotonal Books We reserve the rght to gve away, at Infnty s dscreton and expense, a reasonable number of royalty-free complmentary books to promote the ttle and/or provde as samples of the qualty of books we produce. At tmes we donate a bundle of approprate books to several book festvals, readng programs, lbrary fundrasng events, and n support of SPCA actvtes n addton to beng author frendly, we re pet frendly, too. If the revewer carbon copes (CCs) you when hs or her request s made, we ll CC you when we reply to the revewer, confrmng the requested book has been sent drectly to the revewer. We do not advocate sendng potental revewers unsolcted books wth hopes of the recpent wrtng a blurb rarely are revews forthcomng and these copes are lkely to end up on the Internet as used books. Although, those wth a known nterest n your book who have prevously expressed a wllngness to wrte a revew for you deserve to receve an autographed fnshed book sent from you, the author, wth a note thankng hm or her for the knd offer to share a few thoughts about your lterary efforts. Monthly Publsher s Statement E-maled statements are sent to you monthly, documentng all copes of your books sold durng the most recent reportable 38

THE INFINITY POST-PUBLISHING ADVANTAGE month. The statement ncludes total number of copes sold from release to date, wth a breakdown by sellng prces and correspondng royaltes earned. There s a tme lag between the reportable month and the month when the statement s ssued to allow tme for accounts to be properly settled. Royaltes are pad on the actual sellng prce: 10 percent on purchases at 40 to 50 percent off the suggested retal prce by the author; 15 percent on returnable wholesale orders sold at 40 percent off cover to bookstores; 15 percent on dstrbutor orders at 50 to 55 percent off cover; and 30 percent on all retal purchases va BBOTW.com. Royalty checks are ssued when the amount of royalty due s $20 or more. Royalty Splts If you wrote the book wth a co-author, we can splt royaltes and send separate checks, as well as duplcate Publsher s Statements to both ndvduals. Smlar royalty splts can be arranged for llustrators, graphc artsts, edtors, agents, and book coaches, accordng to nstructons from the prmary author regardng the dvson of proceeds from book sales. Infnty s accountng of every book sold helps to keep both partes on the same page wth accurate numbers agreeng on a far dvson of labor s up to them to work out. Royaltes Pad after the Author Has Passed On Infnty authors may have a legal document prepared by an attorney that states upon the death of author, the deceased author s book s to contnue to be publshed by Infnty wth the royaltes pad to the named ndvdual, unversty, or chartable organzaton to whom the rghts have been legally reassgned to. The legal term for ths s a predetermned drected assgnment sort of lke a lvng wll for assurng the contnued lfe of the book. In some states ths wll keep royalty assets from beng entangled n probate proceedng and guarantee the book wll never go out of prnt, even after the author s long gone. Author Prvacy Guaranteed Infnty wll never release any nformaton regardng our authors or the total number of ther books sold and royaltes pad. Customer Prvacy Under the Consumer Far Trade Laws provson protectng customer prvacy, Infnty s unable to release any nformaton regardng our customers and ther book purchases. When we receve e-mal and USPS mal sent by customers to the author, n care of Infnty, we wll do our utmost to forward these communcatons to the author for ther response. New Bookstore Accounts If there s an ndependent bookstore n your area nterested n orderng your book to add to ther on-shelf nventory, we wll be glad to negotate terms and open an account, and shp books to the store. Lkewse, any locally owned specalty retal stores sellng books are welcome to apply for an open account wth Infnty. We prde ourselves on your satsfacton and our adherence to a Gold Standard of servce. Gve us the opportunty to earn your trust. 40

Part 6 MARKET SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU Success starts wth compellng content refned by professonal edtors. Publshng wth an author-frendly publsher provdes the supportve professonal platform for success. However, the sustanng surges of success flow prmarly from the ongong promotonal exposure generated by the author. Indeed, exposure equals book sales! As t was mentoned before, sales are the fnancal measurng rod for the success of your book. Breakeven Pont The breakeven pont s when the fee for the professonal servces rendered to publsh, dstrbute, and promote your book s surpassed by earned royaltes. In accountant talk, t s fnancally movng from expensve red nk nto proft-laden black. To fgure your book s breakeven pont, take the total cost of brngng your book nto the marketplace, for example $1,500 and dvde by the average royalty earned. If you re consderng a book promoton opportunty that costs $150 to partcpate, then you need the exposure to result n 15 books beng sold before the effort produces a return on the nvestment, assumng that the average royalty earned s $10 per book. Each marketng opportunty s lke plantng mystery seeds; you never know when the seeds wll eventually sprout and draw 41

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR nterest n your book. For all thngs, there s a season sort of and sometmes there s no rhyme or reason to when somethng comes nto season and yelds the frutful proft of book orders. Sometmes your promotonal efforts may take longer to reach the breakeven pont. As long as you keep a runnng total of ongong nvestments n your book, you can project an overall approxmaton of how many books are needed to sell to recoup promotonal ventures. The pont of dmnshng returns occurs when a promotonal thrust slows down after the purchased wndow of marketplace exposure expres. Sure, there wll be a trckle of nterest after the fact, but unless sales surpassed the breakeven pont, t could be a long tme n comng but then agan, some content lves forever on the Internet. When your book s always avalable for purchase, there s the proft potental for steadly accumulatng fnancal returns from all your promotonal efforts. The Dgtal Advantage One of the advantages of dgtal publshng usng POD technology s the ablty to swap book fles and ntroduce a new and mproved second edton whenever t s ready for release. Ths provdes authors wth the opportunty to repar damaged content and launch ther revsed books anew wth hopes of more robust sales. Swappng book fles makes updatng tme-senstve nformaton more current and greatly expands the market for books contanng tmely content. We do charge a nomnal fee for updatng book fles wth approxmately the same number of pages as the orgnal edton. The fee s hgher f the cover prce, page count, and ISBN need to be changed. Amazon Rankngs Your book s rankng on Amazon s not always an ndcator of sales, nor s t necessarly somethng to strve for. The numercal movements n Amazon rankngs frequently reflect consumer nterest n other books on the same general topc or genre as yours. When the rankng drops lower, that s usually ndcatve of ncreasng publc nterest n the topc, whch means a few purchases of your book may be the result of the book s relatvty to a tmely topc of current nterest. 42

MARKET SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU Some authors try to mprove ther Amazon rankng by havng famly, frends, and socal-networkng buddes order ther book from Amazon on the same day. The good news s maybe 50 or so books are sold whch s enough to plunge the number; the sad news s the 15 percent earned royalty s on books consgned to Amazon at 55 percent off cover ths s how Amazon s able to dscount lke they do. The author s royalty would have been doubled had the cluster of orders been placed drectly wth BBOTW.com. The queston s, do you want worthless braggng rghts to an empty number, or do you want to focus on promotng your book nto money? Hopefully, you ll decde on the latter. The Meanngful Book Numbers Some mght say t s the ISBN, your book s dentfyng socal securty number that s most mportant to book sales. Ths number allows us to track your book through the sales process. The ISBN s mportant when sales numbers start to be lnked to an ncreasng number of books sold n publshng lngo, t s a book pullng or makng projected sales numbers, or when t sells the number of copes necessary to earn back the cost of gettng t nto prnt. Crossng that ntal breakeven pont fnancally transforms you nto an author earnng a trackable ncome from the sale of your book. Of course earnng an ncome from your book s one of the reasons for publshng, n addton to expressng yourself through your wrtng sklls. Regardless of your motvaton for authorng your book, royalty revenue s ndeed a worthy beneft for the author even f t s only enough to provde for a few creature comforts. Don t go quttng your day job n antcpaton of nstant fame and vast fortunes from the sale of your book t s not probable although, there are several Infnty authors earnng comfortable ncomes from speakng engagements wth back-of-the-room sales and promotng ther books on the Internet. Whle a good number of authors are dlgently workng the market to ht breakeven and beyond, there are stll a number of ttles that sell less than 100 copes. The lackng sales are usually rooted n the absence of promotonal efforts by the author. Motvated authors makng meanngful sales are shameless book opportunsts, ever watchful for opportuntes to menton ther 43

BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR books, ready to tactfully explot postve wndows of exposure, and f need be, makng ther own book-hook openng, Well, snce you ddn t ask, I m an author and the ttle of my recent book s... Naturally, t s best to smoothly nterject ths nformaton nto a conversaton n a non-offensve way. Books on Hand Never leave home wthout a few copes of your most recent book. It s amazng how authors mss makng sales smply because they ddn t have a book close at hand. Oh sure, when you don t have a book wth you to sell to them at the moment they re reachng for ther cash, people wll say they ll order your book, but very few actually follow through and place an order although t sure does help f you have a busness card or a bookmarker to remnd them of ther nterest n your book. Always have a supply of books on hand for those socal events and holday gatherngs, so when relatves ask about your book, you ll have copes to sell them. Wth relatves beng related to you some wll expect to receve a free autographed book from you; ncely explan that sellng your book s how you make a lvng. Then tell them you ll gladly gve them, your famly and frends, a specal dscount and knock off a few bucks to keep peace n the famly. Marketng Plans Infnty wll not develop and mplement marketng plans for ndvdual ttles. However, upon request, we wll revew and make suggestons to mprove the cost-effectveness of marketng plans prepared by the author. We beleve authors know better than we do the target market for ther book and are usually the very best canddates to do the promotng that wll get the word out prospects can t consder buyng your book f they don t know you have one, or what t s about. Infnty does offer addtonal marketng servces that nclude the prntng of promotonal materal and cuttng-edge servces that serve those authors that are lookng for somethng extra to launch ther book or to provde a sustanng effort to ther marketng program. Sometmes we wll recommend marketng programs offered by trusted thrd partes, for Infnty authors to consder. Usually we are able to negotate a reduced prce for Infnty 44

MARKET SUCCESS IS UP TO YOU authors to partcpate because frequently these are plot programs, and we have an excellent test bed of several thousand authors wth a dverse offerng of publshed books. At tmes, Infnty provdes the ntal seed books for authors partcpatng n these optonal programs; however, we wll not provde fnancal support. Whenever possble, we encourage authors to talk wth other authors who have engaged n smlar programs, and compare notes. Authors Conferences and Semnars Infnty offers superb opportuntes to network wth experts n the publshng communty and connect wth fellow authors. Tradtonally held the last weekend n September n Valley Forge, Pennsylvana, ths event has earned hgh acclam from authors who have forged nto the knowledge reservor, for delverng more than promsed. Attendees are usually surprsed to dscover the conference regstraton fee ncludes meals and lodgng for the weekend ths way we have an n-house audence to captvate wth creatve concepts for sellng more books. We do our utmost to keep the regstraton fee author affordable for ths not-for-proft event, whle generatng a workable ncome carefully budgeted to produce a world-class conference wth top-notch presenters and keynoters. The beneft to Infnty s authors who have attended a conference sell more books many of the authors who have been to Valley Forge return more than once to partcpate n ths annual event that always has current topcs of nterest to authors. Infnty earns ts proft sellng books, and our authors make those sales happen ths s especally true of authors who have been part of a Gatherng of Authors events. Infnty s proud to be afflated wth Pearl S. Buck Internatonal n delverng Author-Orgnated Publshng workshops. We are always nterested n hearng from our authors or partners about new opportuntes to spread the word about books! No publsher can guarantee the fnancal success of your book. Even books publshed by manstream publshng houses and backed by thousands of advertsng dollars may fal to produce the 45
