Based at Hicks Park, Record numbers of 650 registrants participated in this event making it the largest IronMaori event held outside of its Homebase Ahuriri, Napier. IronMaori is the brainchild of Heather Te Au-Skipworth and Missy Mackey who wanted to encourage Maori to live a healthier lifestyle. IronMaori Tamariki was first off the mark on 13 February 2015 with a 100m swim and a 1km run followed by the main event on 14 February 2015 for ages 14yrs+ involving a 300m swim, 10km cycle, 2.5km walk/run or 600m swim, 20km cycle, 5km walk/run. The IronMaori kaupapa is open to everyone, no matter their size, age or race. IronMaori is attracting Maori people who would usually be put off entering an Ironman. As a sponsor of IronMaori Taranaki 2015, Ngati Ruanui is helping to spread the word via participation and promotion of this awesome kaupapa Maori that demonstrates and articulates strong whanau values and encouring our uri to JUST DO IT at your pace, your race. Leading up to the event Whanau, Hapu, Kohanga and Kura were training together (and in secret), sharing their journey on Facebook and meeting for group trainings 9am every Sunday. They continue to train and share their journey as they prepare for their participation in the 1/4 IronMaori event being held in Ahuriri, Napier on Saturday 7 November 2015 and the 1/2 IronMaori event also being held in Ahuriri, Napier on Sunday 5 December For more information please go to Nga mihi to all the volunteers who gave their time freely to ensure that the event ran smoothly. 2 SUCCESSION IS THRIVING New Manager for Mountain House Sarah-Lee Rangi has been appointed as the Manager of our Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House. Sarah-Lee has been part of the Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House since Ngati Ruanui Holdings purchased it in Employed by the Iwi since 2006, Sarah-Lee grew up in Normanby and attended Hawera High. She says that as part of Ngati Ruanui, she has always had a connection with the Maunga. Being selected to manage the Mountain House is a real honour. While I am sad to leave my role in the Iwi head office, this is a new challenge that I am excited about. You couldn t find a better place to live and work. kaupapa and raising a family. She has an absolute conviction that our people deserve the best I have no doubt that is exactly what she will deliver. She has completed her Diploma and Degree while working full time for the Iwi supporting in multiple Sarah-Lee Rangi with the kitchen staff at the Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House Ngati Ruanui Tahua LTD GM Appointed In February this year Darryn Ratana Chair & Director of Ngati Ruanui Tahua Ltd announced Miri Snee took up the position of General Manager of Ngati Ruanui Tahua Limited. This new and challenging role oversees Ngaati Ruanui Healthcare, Te Puawaitanga Early Childhood Centre and Ngaati Ruanui Kohanga. Miri brings extensive experience not only in the education sector, but in the health and social development sectors as well. Miri was previously a senior Manager of Student Support and Learning Services at Te Wananga o Aotearoa Papaioea Campus. Miri is passionate about providing excellent services to our whanau - in the most mana enhancing way, ensuring ahurutanga, endeavouring to achieve mauriora, promoting ahuatanga Maori through our values by ethical compassion and inclusive leadership. In taking up this position Miri said I am especially interested in the opportunity and challenge. Developing and strategically moving forward together overcoming barriers and building strong working relationships. PAGE 2

3 POU TUARA ELECTIONS 2015 The three yearly Pou Tuara elections will be held this year. The election process commences in approximately 4 months time. A candidate Wananga is being scheduled for June to provide potential candidates with information about the role of a Pou Tuara, the date and time will be advertised in advance, so watch this space. The election timeframe is as follows: Voting packs will contain everything you need to know about these elections and how your vote will be treated in the election process. To ensure you have a vote, please keep your contact information current with Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui Trust. HUI-A-TAU On 30 November 2014, Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui Trust and its subsidiaries held the Group Hui-a-Tau and presented the annual report to nga uri at the TSB Hub, Hawera. The agenda for the day varied slightly from previous years. It saw greater participation from uri via a workshop that required feedback on whanau aspirations. Approximately 80 uri participated in this workshop where the feedback was collated and will be used to inform future planning and strategies. The Strategic Direction document titled The Vision was distributed at the Hui-a-tau to uri. It prescribes the Runanga priorities & strategic objectives. 4 HUI-A-IWI In August 2014 a contingent of Pou Tuara, Pahake and TRONRT staff travelled to Sydney Australia to host a hui-a-iwi with our Ngati Ruanui whanau who now reside there. The purpose of this hui is to stay connected with our whanau and keep them informed on the initiatives and activities being carried out at home. The one day hui compromised workshops, entertainment from our Pahake and of course whakawhanaungatanga. Themes that come from our uri in Sydney was a request for more cultural, communication and economic opportunities as: A sub-committee of uri based in Sydney was formed to maintain ongoing communications with TRONRT as well as help facilitate and achieve the opportunities identified above. 5 IRON SAND MINING High Court Appeal Dropped Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) have dropped their appeal against the Environmental Protection Authority s (EPA) decision to decline their application to mine for iron sands off the coast of Patea. This was great news; as Ngati Ruanui was the only iwi standing up in the High Court to defend the decision of not allowing the mining to proceed. Court costs were also awarded to Ngati Ruanui. TTR have indicated that they wish to apply for a new mining application, details have yet to be provided about this application. Any new application will be reviewed in the same way as the previous application, the protection of our environment will not be compromised said Haimona Maruera Jnr Chairman of Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui Trust. 6 TE RA O RUAPUTAHANGA In October 2014 Ngati Ruanui held its third Festival which encompassed a number of events. The aim of the Festival is to bring together nga uri o nga hapu o Ngati Ruanui. Facebook was alive with postings of enthusiastic uri ready to support, participate and compete with each other. The Powhiri was held on Friday 24 October 2014 at Wharepuni Marae. On Saturday 25 October 2014 Kapa Haka, whaikorero and Moteatea were the first on the agenda. Hapu participing in these categories were required to perform whakaeke, waiata-aringa, poi, haka and whakawatea. The Topics for the whaikorero were open however all whaikorero had to embrace Ngati Ruanuitanga. Hapu competing for the overall Festival aggregate were required to sing Nei ka noho. Teams ranged in age and numbers, and were judged by Patricia Ngarewa, Jenny Kershaw, Jenny Langford, Moringa Kumeroa, Maurice Walden, Henare Ngaia, Piripi King and Te Orihau Karaitiana. The MCs for the day was Rawiri Tinirau. Tautohetohe was also on the agenda for the weekend. The topics and debating were enjoyed by all. The topics were: Ngati Ruanui Graduates must hold a tohu Fracking is good Whanau Ora is a great success Should kawe-mate be only taken to the Marae Maori are good at following rules On the final day competitive and non competitive sporting events were held. This included a Sports Parade, Netball, Touch Rugby, Volleyball, Table Tennis, bouncy castles PAGE 6

7 Mini-triathlon, cards, indoor bowls and board games. Prize Giving and Poroporoaki concluded this awesome kaupapa. 8 WHAREKURA O NGATI RUANUI On 2 February 2015 Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Ngati Ruanui commenced the new year with a Powhiri widely supported by the whole community. Previously a year 1 to 8 Kura, Ministry of Education granted the ability to extend to Wharekura year 9 to 13. This represented an exciting new era for Ngati Ruanui as six rangatahi commenced their year 9 journey in the newly established Ngati Ruanui Wharekura.
