1 My main Iwi people are Ngati kahungunu and Rongomai wahine Our tribal boundary stretches from south of Gisborne down the East coast to Wairarapa and across the strait into the South Island. My main Marae is Takitumu in Wairoa, south of Gisborne. Takitumu is a significant Marae in Aotearoa, New Zealand, it is the name of the sacred and ancient Waka(Canoe) of the Maori Migration from Hawaiki, Samoa to Aotearoa, New Zealand. Captained by Tamatea the father of Kahungunu and carrying Priests, Tohunga and sacred articles personifying our Gods. The waka had many names throughout the navigational journey and this was the final name Taki meaning to lift and tumu meaning burden. Takitimu Mountain Range named by Tamatea to commemorate the final journey place where the waka was damaged and wreaked from rough weather at the mouth of nearby Te Wae Wae Bay, Southland. Remnants of the waka still remain there in a cave. My sub tribes I affiliate too through whanau, family whakapapa (history) Ngati Pahauwera who live at the mouth of the Mohaka River where it enters the sea-maungaharura Range Ngati Tuwharetoa who live at the upper head waters of the Mohaka River -Kaimanawa Range

2 Ko Marlene Skeet toku ingoa My name is Marlene Skeet Tena Koutou Katoa Ko tenei pepeha Ko Takitimu toku waka Ko Mohaka toku awa Ko Maunga-haruru o Tawhirirangi toku Maunga Ko Te Kahu o Te Rangi toku Whare Tupuna Ko Waipapa-a-Iwi te Marae Ko Ngati Kahugunu toku Iwi Ko Pahauwera toku Hapu My whakapapa begins at Takitumu where my grandmother was the cultural guide for the Marae, her guardianship of that Marae, it s ancestral history she shared with all people and international visitors, her breaths of culture given to many. In the passing of my Kui (Elder) the open Marae door where she always stood was now closed for me so to speak. Never to look back at what I lost I went forward on a traversing mountain and river journey but not without storing her knowledge, spirit, recited chants of Maori faith, images of the Whakairo (Carved history of our gods on the walls of Takitumu) Today I am 52 years old an accomplished Maori River Guide with a cross over European profession as an international fly fishing guide. My husband Craig Skeet joins me as a professional guide and we engage with other professional guides to fulfil our tourism packages. Phil Belcher joins me as the Kaiwhakairo cultural guide, his importance culturally is second to a Maori Chief and it he who carves, holds traditional Maori history. We all stand with open views to share the cultures of New Zealand and Maori.
