PROJECTS PROPOSAL EXAMPLE This document instructs and illustrates what a proposal should look like. Each proposal is worth 40 points: 20 pts: Written Assignment (15pts) and calendar entry (5pts). Calendar entry not included here. 10 pts: References 10 pts: Sketches This document contains a proposal for a functional project and one for a sculptural project. There are different things to consider when writing and sketching for vessels vs. sculpture. Here are a few suggestions for your sketches. Functional: You should choose a form and draw the contour (outline) of the form. Then you repeat that form and sketch different versions of the look and placement of surface decoration. If you need to explore more than one form you may do so as long as you show evidence of brainstorming your surface. Installation art may fall under these sketch suggestions. Sculpture: With sculpture you may explore different forms and proportions. Because sculpture usually involved many parts that will be attached together, you should draw and label each part so you know what you are shooting for. You may jot down different ideas of how you think you will build the form. Make notes so you remember not to forget the little things. Installation art may fall under these sketch suggestions. Mixed Media: If you are using mixed media be sure you note that on your sketches. Begin to think about how you will apply the mixed media and what you need to do to the clay in order prepare it for the non-clay item. Remember all mixed media get put on after the final glaze firing. When writing the written part you have 2 options: Proposal Worksheet: This is a Microsoft Office Word document that you can type in your information and insert your reference images into a table. Proposal Example uses this worksheet. It is easy if you prefer typing your proposal. Proposal Fill-in: If you prefer to hand-write your proposal you may use this form. I have provided them for you. They are in the back pocket of the class binder in the class locker. If you would like to download from home Possibilities / Reminders: You may combine projects. If you choose to do that you must write two proposals. Talk to instructor about requirements. Projects can be technical or experiemental. For ex. Experimenting with surface techniques, glazes, forms etc. You must make 3 maquettes or templates for one of your projects. There are a few ways to do this. Demo in class.
PROPOSAL WORKSHEET Your Name: Kelley Eggert Proposal for (hand building, wheel, mold, wildcard etc). Name of your project (not title of work) Project 1: Hand building Project (functional) - Vase 1. What will you make for this project? If you will be using a project from the class site please state here. For my hand-building project I will be making large vessel with an undulating rim. 2. Scale? (size) I will use this project as my larger scale project and plan to build 24 high. Not sure of the width or depth just yet. 3. Quantity? (number) One 4. Building Method? Coil 5. Low or High-fire Glaze? Ideas on color and/or sheen? High Fire: Either blue Celadon or a matt green 6. Will you use mixed media? What and where? No 7. Ideas on surface treatment? (slip, scrafitto, carving, inlay, stamp, etc.) I will carve the surface with undulating forms that mirror the rim. The carving will have a lot of volume and be only at the rim. I will also pierce though the clay in areas. I will be drawing from Art Nouveau style from the early 1800 s and nature. 8. What is the content (meaning or feeling) of your work? I want the work to feel light, breezy, sexy and fun. Like a festive day at the beach in the 20 s 9. What elements will you use to get the point across? Do not simply list the elements, explain what they will look like and how you will use them. Example of elements: color, texture, pattern, form, line, appendages The form of the vessel will be tall and very sensual with a slight bulge at the belly and shoulder. The rim will be cut to slightly allude to the collarbone of a female figure and reminiscent of a necklace from the 20 s. The surface design will follow the form of the rim in voluminous lines of stylized waves. The vessel will have a very natural and flowing look. It will be glazed with blue glaze or possibly a matt green and matt white
CALENDAR Be sure to mark your calendar with all important deadlines for this project. See Project Proposal document for details. REFERENCES One reference page for form These can be ideas for the contour of your form(s) or information from the world that will inspire the form you will create. One reference page for surface These should be about glaze and surface treatment such as sprigs, carving etc. These can also be images from the world that will inspire your surface design such as close-up of texture or line. 5pts 10 pts (5pts each) **Note that each page of your references should have a minimum of 5 images for a total of 10 reference images. SKETHCES Three pages of sketches or maquettes / templates - The object you are making should have several pages of sketches or maquettes / templates. Note that each page of sketches should have a myriad of images or written information on it. One small sketch in the middle of a page is not brainstorming an idea. - You may combine maquettes / templates and sketches to fulfill requirements. One maquette = 1 page of sketches 10 pts REFERENCES AND SKETCHES ON NEXT PAGE
REFERENCES FOR VASE You should have one page of references for form AND one for surface. These could be anything that relates to your project such as texture, contour forms, inspiration from world. Google image, photos. You may need to resize to fit in box once you have imported image. Feel free to annotate your images.

SKETCHES FOR VASE Be sure to have three pages. Your sketches may look very different than mine. You sketch what you need. Notice how many notes I put on mine. Be sure to remind yourself of things or write down the different ideas you are thinking about. Brainstorm!!!

PROPOSAL WORKSHEET Your Name: Kelley Eggert Proposal for (hand building, wheel, mold, wildcard etc). Name of your project P2: Wheel Project (Sculptural) - Cat 1. What will you make for this project? If you will be using a project from the class site please state here. I will use the Composite project sheet to make a seated figure of a cat caught in a ball of yarn. 2. Scale? (size) Quantity? (number) One 4. Building Method? Wheel thrown pieces connected together. There will probably be hand built parts for the front legs and tail. I could build solid if thin or coil these appendages 5. Low or High-fire Glaze? Ideas on color and/or sheen? High-fire glaze. Possibly washes and underglaze for color with a very light spray of clear glaze. OR satin black and matt white glaze with underglaze for green eyes and maybe red for the collar. I want the eyes and collar to contrast the cat. 6. Will you use mixed media? What and where? Yes, Real cat whiskers will be used for whiskers and a tag and bell will be placed on clay collar. I may use a ball of yarn with one end hanging from the cat s mouth. Some of the yarn will be wrapped around the cat. Wherever this happens there will be depressions in the clay fur so it looks real. 7. Ideas on surface treatment? (slip, scrafitto, carving, inlay, stamp, etc.) Additions of clay and carving to create cat fur texture. May stamp stitching around cat collar or stamp images or a design into cat collar. Maybe the paw will be on the ball of yarn. 8. What is the content (meaning or feeling) of your work? Because I have never used the wheel in this manner I am going to assume that my cat will look more goofy and disproportionate than a realistically modeled cat. So, I am going to go for a more animated caricatures of a cat. 9. What elements will you use to get the point across? Do not simply list the elements, explain what they will look like and how you will use them. Example of elements: color, texture, pattern, form, line, appendages The cats fur will be kinda clumpy and highly stylized. The body of the cat will be long and off balance like goofy from Looney tunes. The cat will have a silly look on its face maybe crossed eyes looking at the ball of yarn or a smile on its face as it looks toward the viewer. The name on the collar will be something that suits a goofy cat not sure what that will be yet. To further emphasize the goofiness I could make the front paws really skinny while its body is plump.
