2 Here are a FEW types of molds there are more You will choose one of these types of molds

3 Sprig Mold This is a one-part press mold that is used for decora/on. All details on this cup were pressed into a mold and slipped and scored to the form. If you choose to do this type of mold you will need to build a form to ahach sprigs too. You may hand build or throw. You may make one large form or three small forms. You may make mul/ple sprigs. They are easy. Don t forget sprigs can be ahached to sculpture

4 Examples of sprig molds You may find objects or make a clay form to use No/ce that these are shallow and one sided

5 You can easily make more than one form in one mold so if you are going to do sprigs you may as well choose a few objects This is how your mold will look your objects will be placed face up in clay with a wall of clay built around it. No/ce the space between the objects and the space between the objects and wall. This is good placement

11 Hump and Slump Molds These are one-part drape molds meaning a slab of clay is draped over the mold or pressed inside. Forms can be found in your kitchen. These make nice uniform dishes. If you choose a hump or slump mold you must make three clay form from one mold. You will make a SET meaning the form and surface design should relate. Consider repe//on, rhythm, unity and variety

12 Solid plaster makes these molds. Good if you want to concentrate on outer wall surface design and feet BUT if you do not take your clay off the form in /me the clay will shrink and crack Hump Mold Like a camel

13 Slump molds are preferable to hump because they will not crack BUT They are a lihle harder to make (not too bad) Slump Mold

14 Molds can get prehy complex and funky. The one on the ley looks like it was handmade whereas the one on the right looks like it came from a form you find at the store. You can do either!

15 For drape molds you are using wet slabs of clay perfect for rolling texture into surface like with the soy slab planter from ceramics 1 Nice sets!

19 Two-Part Press Molds Two sides of plaster make a threedimensional hollow form. Good for larger or thicker closed forms. Usually more sculptural but it does not have to be. If you choose to make a two-part press mold then you will need to create three clay posi/ves from the mold. You can create a set of three or combine forms to make sculpture or a func/onal composite.

20 When a slab of clay is pressed into each side of this mold, the posi/ve will look just like the bohle. It will also be hollow!

21 This is a three part mold. Molds can get extremely complex and come in many parts. Lets NOT do a three-part mold THIS TIME!!!

22 You absolutely can make a mold of a form like these. But NO, you cannot make a mold of something that will melt. Two part molds are found everywhere in manufacturing

23 Figurines make great objects to make molds from. Just keep in mind that you are not simply copying a form. You need to do something to it that makes it a crea/ve and unique object. Hands probably have undercut. Would have to mold separately

24 Aside from the head, this is made from 2-part molds

25 Everything in the buggy is made from molds. The buggy is of a non-clay material and YES, you may use mixed media

27 This teapot is a conglomera/on of molded parts. You have to look very closely. Two part molds can be made as addi/ons to form. You can see the feet at the top ley are made from molds Too thick to be a sprig mold so it must be a two-part mold.

32 UNDERCUTS - you cannot make a successful mold with undercuts. Applies to all types of plaster molds

33 The single most important thing you must do to your object is look for undercuts. If your object has undercuts you can fill the undercut in with clay. If you do that you will change the shape of your object. Once the clay posi/ve is removed from mold you can always carve clay out of the ini/al undercut. Undercut no undercut
