4 Drawing Assignment Dalí Doodles Supplies Needed sketchbook or drawing paper ballpoint pen markers and colored pencils photo references of Salvador Dalí... For the D drawing assignment, you will do eight line drawing portraits of artist Salvador Dalí, and then pick two of those to doodle. Let s get started! 1. Gather your pen, paper, and photo reference of Salvador Dalí (you can use one image or several).

5 2. Cut your paper to the size and dimensions of your choice, or draw a box in your sketchbook to contain your drawing. 3. Crop the reference so it is the same proportion as your cut paper or drawn box. 4. Paying particular attention to the negative shapes, or the areas around Dalí s face, begin drawing. You might want to give yourself a little point map so that you know where you are headed. Pay special attention to the negative shapes, or the shapes around Mr. Dalí. 5. Draw one line at a time, continuously looking back and forth from your reference to your drawing. 6. Do 8 small line drawings over the course of the twoweek period. Pick one or two to doodle with a combination of markers and colored pencils. Doodle while your attention is elsewhere... when you are on the phone, listening to a podcast, etc. Play with colors, marks... and see what naturally flows out of you!

6 Mixed-Media Assignment Drybrush Dares Supplies Needed 2 pieces of watercolor paper (a cold press or rougher paper is nice for this project), cut down to desired size watercolors acrylic paints (any colors) pencil, black ballpoint pen a selection of older brushes... For the D mixed-media assignment you will do two paintings. But instead of painting what and how you normally paint, you will choose its opposite. (Try it! You might like it!)

7 A Dare! Try something you might not normally choose to do. In this lesson we will all be working on different things. Use the graph to the right to help decide the subject matter, process or substrate you will use for your paintings. For example, if you love to paint trees, try painting interiors instead (the opposite end of the line). NOTE: The chart is just a suggestion; of course you can decide on your own opposite assignment. :D

8 Step by Step Step 1 Decide what your challenge is and gather the items or references necessary to work from, if applicable. Work from life, from photos, or your imagination. Step 2 Cover your paper with a layer of random watercolor marks in different colors. Fill the whole page. Use a big brush! Work wet! Work bright! Let it get muddy! Then, let dry. Step 3 If desired, sketch out your painting right on top of the watercolor layer. Use pencil or pen. Step 4 Using a dry paintbrush, mix a paint color. Before put-

9 ting brush to paper, though, wipe most of the paint off on your palette. Next, drag it lightly over the surface of your paper. There should be a mottled effect. When you start running out of paint, you can rub harder and even scrub using a circular motion. Let layer dry. Step 5 Build your colors up with 2 or more layers, letting the paint dry inbetween each layer. (Because the paint is not wet, the drying time will be quick!) Keep adding layers until you like it! Step 6 Add pen or pencil lines if desired to finish your painting (optional). Do at least two dare paintings... post online, and write about your experience! Remember: All papers and paints work differently; try to be open to happy accidents.

10 Optional Optional / Extra Credit After you ve done the D drawing and mixed-media assignments, you might want to try the following: 1. Take some time to look at your doodled Dalís. Do you see any patterns or motifs that keep occuring? Make a drybrush painting highlighting some of these elements. 2. Try the drybrush assignment with your normal subject matter or style. 3. Draw or paint anything D related, in any style or media. P.S. Please do NOT feel behind if you don t get to these! These prompts are optional.
