3 education; students who write in their respective content areas will learn more and retain what they learn better than those who don t. Courses in the core curriculum have been identified as Writing Across the Curriculum courses. Minimum standards for the Writing Across the Curriculum component are: 1. The writing assignments should total words. For example, a single report which is 1500 words in length OR a series of essay questions and short papers (example: four 375-word assignments) which total 1500 words could meet the requirement. 2. The writing component will represent at least 10% of a student s final grade in the course. Is this course identified as a Writing Across the Curriculum course? Describe the format, symbols, and principles by which a blueprint is drawn. 2. Accurately locate information about each part of a building. 3. Interpret the symbols for each of the different trades listed in the technical specifications of the drawing. 4. Recognize and identify the various building materials used in a drawing. 5. Apply the basic math functions necessary to gather correct information from the blueprints. Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the semester, students will be able to: Competency 1 Describe the basic language of the blue print industry. Objective 1.1 Describe the different viewpoints of the blue prints. Objective 1.2 Read scales, lines, symbols, elevations, sections and details of a drawing. Objective 1.3 Demonstrate the ability to draw to scale. Objective 1.4 Read an architects scale. Competency 2 Demonstrate how to read and interpret blue print drawings. Objective 2.1 Demonstrate the ability to extract specific project information including the key and scale. Objective 2.2 Describe how to read footing specifications. Objective 2.3 Demonstrate how to read foundation specs. Objective 2.4 Discuss how to read room finishing details. Objective 2.5 Recognize oblique, isometric, and orthographic drawings. Objective 2.6 Draw simple isometric sketches. Objective 2.7 identify plan views, elevations and sections. Competency 3 Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret multi-dimensional drawings. Objective 3.1 Demonstrate the ability to read multifamily construction projects. Objective 3.2 Apply the skill sets to other types of construction. Objective 3.3 Apply the skills learned to mechanical and electrical trades. Competency 4 Discuss the basics of commercial construction. Objective 4.1 Interpret prints for commercial construction.

Objective 10.1 Lay out building lines according to a site plan. Objective 10.2 Utilize the 6-8 o-10 or equal diagonals method to check the squareness of corners. Objective 10.3 Use a leveling instrument to measure angles and depths of excavations. Objective 13.2 Locate and describe the girders that support floor framing. Objective 13.3 Determine the lengths of columns and the heights of piers. Competency 14 Utilize drawings to recognize the basics of floor framing, wall framing, and partitions Objective 14.1 Describe the sill construction shown on a set of drawings. Objective 14.2 Indentify the size, direction, and spacing of floor joists according to a set of drawings. Objective 14.3 Describe the floor framing around openings in a floor. Objective 14.4 Describe the layout of a house from its floor plans. Objective 14.5 Find specific dimensions given on floor plans. Competency 15 Identify the various types of roof construction, including Hip and Valley Framing.

5 Objective 15.1 Discuss the common roof types, including the terms and roof pitches as a ratio of rise to run, or as a fraction. Objective 15.2 Identify the trusses and plans, elevations and sections. Objective 15.3 Calculate the length of common rafters and the length of rafter rails when overhang is given. Competency 16 Discuss the basics of cornice construction and how it is represented on blueprints. Objective 16.1 Describe the cornice construction as shown on a set of drawings Objective 16.2 List the sizes of the individual parts of the cornice shown on a set of drawings Objective 16.3 Describe the provisions for attic or roof ventilation as shown on a set of drawings Competency 17 Describe exterior wall coverings on a set of drawings. Objective 17.1 Describe the exterior wall covering planned for all parts of a building. Objective 17.2 Explain how flashing, drip caps, and other devices are used to shed water. Objective 17.3 Describe the treatment to be used at corners and edges of the exterior wall covering. Competency 18 Describe the information provided on a set of drawings regarding decks, fireplaces, and stairs. Objective 18.1 Explain how a deck is supported and anchored. Objective 18.2 Describe the foundation, firebox, throat, and chimney of a fireplace based upon the information provided on a set of drawings. Objective 18.3 Identify the parts of stairs, and the tread and riser size. Competency 19 Identify the information provided on a set of drawings regarding building insulations, finish moldings, floor coverings and cabinetry. Objective 19.1 Identify the insulation to be used i walls, floors, and ceilings. Objective 19.2 Identify the types of molding and floor coverings to be used based upon the blueprints. Objective 19.3 List the sizes, types and dimensions of the cabinets shown of a set of drawings. Competency 20 Differentiate between the difference in single structures and multifamily dwellings in larger developments.
