This Exam Section is primarily testing your knowledge of the Practice of Architecture as it relates to zoning, programming, and project management. This is an umbrella section of the exam. Other exams are more specific about their content, while this type of exam tends to be a catch-all for both the Construction Documents & Services Exam as well as the Site Planning & Design Exam. Studying for and passing those exams first may be a good way to study for this exam if taken in quick succession. You need to understand the fundamentals behind how a project is conceived at a contractual and planning level. Other conceptual ideas about practice and how a project should be run will often times be found in this exam. Understanding these concepts and how they may be applied is vital to your success here.

11 VIGNETTE SITE ZONING THINGS TO CONSIDER Overview This vignette exists in order to test your ability to understand basic zoning setbacks, their restrictions on a site, and how they affect a site s buildable design area - both in plan and section. Of the vignettes you will be tested on over the course of the entire A.R.E., this is likely going to be on the low end of difficulty for you. Assuming that you ve coordinated at least a few drawings in your office experience, the most difficult part of this vignette is simply to make sure that you have taken into account all of the problem s parameters. While other vignettes may allow for some variation, this is one of two or three vignettes where there is only really one solution possible. Follow the rules the exam provides and you ll do just fine. Basic Steps 1. Read and Understand the Parameters 2. Draw Sketch Circles to Define Setbacks 3. Draw Primary & Secondary Construction Zones 4. Use Plan to Draw Section Below 5. Check 6. Check Again

12 VIGNETTE BUILDING SECTION THINGS TO CONSIDER TIPS & TRICKS Take note that there is literally only one solution to this problem. Be sure that your site analysis of the zoning restrictions is sound in plan view before moving to the section. One small error in plan could create major errors in section - leading to a likely fail. There will almost definitely be some type of irregularly-shaped border edge to your site that you will need to draw from. Create a bunch of sketch circles of to the side (sized so that the radius is equal to the required setback). Then align a whole bunch of those circles with the edge touching the outside edge of the boundary in question. Now, you should easily be able to snap your construction boundary between a series of pre-determined center points. This will give you the most consistent and accurate construction edge. Check where your section line is given. Your solution may be right for a section, but if it s not the correct section to be using, it doesn t matter. Double, no Triple Check EVERYTHING. Again, there is really only one solution for this vignette.
