3 What is high-speed In this paper high speed is understood from km/h What should we clarify, before starting to plan and to design? Electrical dimensioning depends on - chosen feeding system - usually 25 kv, - train configuration, number of and distance between pantographs, - installed power, - time table, - line speed, gradient, - number of stops, distance between stations etc. This leads to the definition where the sub-stations have to be installed. 3

4 What is high-speed? In this paper high speed is thougt to be km/h EN 50388, coordination power supply rolling stock What should we clarify, before starting to plan and to design? Electrical dimensioning depends on selected power supply system - usually 25 kv train configuration, number of and distance between pantographs, installed power, time table, line speed, gradient, number of stops, distance between stations etc. This leads to the definition where the sub-stations have to be installed. 4

5 How to design the OLE Overhead Line Equipment, contact wire, messenger wire, auxiliary lines Given by the electrical layout scheme (feeding diagram), the conductor section in the overhead line and auxiliary lines - if any - can be defined. Now we have to assure that the mechanical tension in messenger wire and contact wire is suitable for good current collection. For the electrical dimensioning and the dynamic simulation we know several tools by specialised companies. The criteria for current collection is given in the TSI (Technical Specification of Interoperability) which refers to the relevant European Standards (e.g. EN50367, technical criteria for the interaction between pantograph and overhead line) 5

6 What about the trains? Look out for the very best pantograph for current collection You all know, that the contact between contact wire and pantograph, or - even worse several pantographs, is a highly complex dynamic system. We should invest in the pantograph also! One pantograph costs some 25'000 Euro. This makes % of the cost of the train unit, estimated at 35 Mio. The pantograph is treated as a nobody, but the 35 Mio are blocked, when there is no current! So ask your Train Operating Company to install the best pantograph available. 6

7 Simulations Check before you define the final design Simulate the interaction between contact wire and pantograph. With these tools we check the system height of the catenary, the mechanical tension in the wires, the stagger the span length and span differential the arrangement of the droppers finally the contact force at the panto strips. These forces should correspond to TSI and EN 50367, meaning that they have to be as close as possible to the target contact force in function of the train speed and that the mean force shall be greater than three times the standard deviation. 7

8 Time is money How can we start work on site, before all design details are defined? Based on this information you can start layout design. Do it early! Building the mast foundations is time consuming. The foundation work should be done together with the track bed. The earlier the foundations are built, the more accurately you can draw cross-sections, attach brackets, pre-assemble cantilevers, and the quicker the contractor can install structures and wires. 8

9 How do we approach the design? We developed a special tool: ELFF All this information will help the OHL designer to layout his catenary as a 3D model before knowing all technical details of structures and assemblies. A 3D model has the additional advantage of letting young OHL designer understand what they are doing, to learn that an OHL site is very long and very narrow, letting you see the overhead line also from the drivers cab. 9
