2 Policy Context The Innovation Union, 2010: Standards play an important role for innovation The Standardization Regulation, 1025/2012: Standards can help to bridge the gap between research and marketable products or services Horizon 2020 Contribute to European competitiveness through support to the standardisation process and standards Single Market Communication 550/2015 Standards are crucial for innovation and progress in the Single Market: they increase safety, interoperability and competition and help remove trade barriers. 3 Who we are The European Committee for Standardization The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization The European Telecommunications Standards Institute = the European Standards Organisations ( ESOs ) Officially recognized by EU Regulation 1025/2012 (AUWP from DG GROW) + 33 full members + international standards bodies (ISO, IEC, ITU-T) CEN-CENELEC

4 Links to legislation Regulation 1025/2012 reconfirms ESO (+ National Standardization Organizations) system in support of European Union policies and strategic objectives EC Directives ( 40 supported by CEN & CENELEC) define Essential Requirements indicate desired outcome WITHOUT specifying how it should be achieved European Standards developed and approved by ESOs set out technical specifications to meet Essential Requirements Conformity Assessment (CA) policy Use of European Standards is voluntary presumption of conformity (CE marking) CEN-CENELEC

15 Influencing Standardization in TC Project funded under FP7 PantoTRAIN: Pantograph and Catenary Interaction Research: proposal to extend EN pantograph homologation procedure to different catenary systems by numerical simulation has been made proposal to extend TSI HS ENE procedure by the use of simulation for pantograph characteristics has been made CEN-CENELEC

17 Driving Standardization Project funded under FP7 SustainValue: Sustainable Value Creation in Manufacturing Networks Research on new industrial models for a sustainable and efficient production. Standardization: The project developed a Workshop Agreement covering good-practices for developing business models, governance models, sustainable solutions and performance management for existing and new sustainable production and service networks. The CWA was published in summer CEN-CENELEC

19 Supporting Standardization Project funded under FP7 STACAST - New Quality and Design Standards for Aluminium Alloys Cast Products Research on the strategic role of Aluminium Alloys for the future of European Foundry Industry Standardization: The project developed a Technical Report in CEN/TC 132 TR Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Classification of Defects and Imperfections in High Pressure, Low Pressure and Gravity Die Cast Products CEN-CENELEC

20 Project Liaison Conditions: The project requesting the Liaison can demonstrate formal collaboration with the European Standardization System (usually a requirement in Horizon 2020 calls); The project representative can participate in the TC directly, thus ensuring synergies between the research and standardization work (avoiding duplication of standardization work); Consider the budget needed to cover the overhead costs which is 525EURO/year per TC Note: Project Liaison only applies to European work (CEN or CENELEC) CEN-CENELEC
