Bringing together 3 programmes/initiatives that were separated before: FP7 CIP EIT Budget: 70.2 b ( ) A coupling of research to innovation: o From the lab to the market Focus on challenges facing society in Europe: o e.g. health, clean energy, efficient transport Simplified access o for companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries

8 Some Issues Regarding KETs Europe has a strong position in science output EU actors at top of patent ranking in each KET But: There is a gap between the technology base & the manufacturing base Current efforts need to be complemented by o o Product development (including effective demonstrators) Development of manufacturing expertise

9 Why Public-Private Partnerships? Support to Europe's re-industrialisation through radical innovations & technological development Reinforced cooperation with industry to create growth & jobs, whilst addressing major societal challenges To strengthen European industrial leadership To leverage research and innovation efforts To strongly commit industry to joint objectives

10 Case for PPPs under FP7 rules Launched FoF, EeB and GC end 2008 A new model, different from JTIs PPPs under FP7 rules demonstrated clear benefits to industry Key role of industry to shape strategy - implementation under in FP7 Stakeholders backed these PPPs in response to Common Strategic Framework Green Paper

11 The Factories of the Future PPP To support innovation in manufacturing by developing enabling production technologies to help EU manufacturing industry across many sectors to adapt to global competitive pressures by boosting their technological base Manufacturing as a driving force in the EU economy, (21% of GDP and 20% of all jobs) 25 industrial sectors, largely dominated by SMEs Need to produce more with less resources & less waste FP7 Themes involved: NMP, ICT Budget: 1.2 billion in 4 years

13 Features in "contractual" PPP calls Involvement of industry in the preparation Industrial partners provide orientation High share of industrial experts in evaluations Single stage evaluation to reduce time-to-contract Implemented through Coordinated Calls for Proposals Specific PPP Annex to the WP adds visibility Open to everyone according to normal FP7 rules

14 Commitments from Industry PPP goals as part of the industrial strategy of the sector Public funds for the PPP to be matched by major industrial sector R+I investments in full synergy Public funds should contribute to increased leverage Adequate key performance indicators to measure progress towards the goals should be identified and agreed Industrial efforts should also consider training

16 Importance of Robotics EC recognized importance of robitcs within FP7 Total support for research in industrial robotics (DG RTD) of 90.9 m for a total of 20 projects Since 2009 every 2 years dedicated topic NMP : Automation and robotics for sustainable crop and forestry management FoF.NMP : Robots for automation of post-production and other auxiliary processes FoF.NMP : New hybrid production systems in advanced factory environments based on new human-robot interactive cooperation Robotic projects resulting also from other topics due to strong manufacturing focus
