Religious Thimbles by Cerámica Artistica SERIES DOCUMENTATION 1

Cerámica Artistica, a company in Mexico, made bisque porcelain thimbles with hand-tinted religious themes portrayed in sculptured, high bas-relief in the late 70 s and early 80s. The thimbles were stamped on the back with two R s, one above the other. These were sold through The Collectors Choice catalogs in 1980, 81 & 82, but may have been offered other places and times as well. 2

The thimbles have a silver foil sticker inside, printed in blue, showing the mark of two R s, one above the other, and the words Roman MEXICO 3

During the years 1977 through 1982 (and possibly later), Cerámica Artistica offered to collectors a series of bisque porcelain plates, bells and thimbles. We focus here only on the thimbles. This program describes seven different thimbles, sold under two collection names. Because of the small number, both collections are included in this program. 4

The first three thimbles, issued in 1977, 1978 and 1979, were simply called 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Editions of the Cerámica Artistica Collection and all bore bas-relief representations of artwork by the same artist, T. Mizuno. The next four (one offered in 1979, two in 1980 and one in 1982) were entitled The Masterpiece Collection and featured representations of artwork by four different famous religious artists, Fra Filippo Lippi, Pierre Mignard, Robert Zund and Roberto Feruzzi. (We know there were only four in this particular collection because of the advertisement shown on slides 15 & 25 stating that this is the fourth and final edition in this collection.) 5

A 1980 advertisement in The Collectors Circle states in part: Each plate, bell and thimble in this Collection recreates a masterpiece of centuries acclaimed works of great Masters for today s collector. Each thimble, bell and plate in the Masterpiece Collection is crafted in three-dimensional, sculptured high bas-relief in fine bisque porcelain characterized by a velvety translucent texture achieved by a single high-temperature firing, completely free of the glazes used on other porcelains. Each piece is individually painted by hand and bears the backstamp R.R. attesting to its authenticity. 6
