2 Gulf Coast GSPC Code of Ethics This code is established as a guideline to protect and advance the interests of the German Shorthaired Pointer by maintaining high breeding standards and encouraging sportsmanlike competition at all dog events. Members are strongly urged to adhere to the following guidelines: Breeding Breed only healthy adults of good temperament and qualities in relation to the AKC approved standard for the G.S.P. Breed only AKC registered G.S.P.s to AKC registered G.S.P.s and keep accurate records of matings and puppies in accordance with AKC rules. Breed only O.F.A. certified adults. Breed only C.E.R.F. certified stock with certification being done not more than twelve months prior to breeding. As a breeder, assume the responsibility for the welfare of any puppy you produce including a willingness to take a puppy back or assist in placing the dog in a new home. Health The best possible standards of canine health, cleanliness and veterinary care, including socialization with people and exposure to the outside world shall be maintained. Sales Puppies or adults shall not be consigned or sold to pet shops or commercial dealers. Purchasers should be urged to spay/neuter pets that are not to be used for breeding. Furnish buyers with a pedigree, AKC registration application, medical and immunization records, a feeding schedule, general care instructions and information about their local GSP club. Sportsmanship Members shall always conduct themselves in a manner which will reflect credit upon themselves, their German Shorthaired Pointers, and the sport of purebred dogs, regardless of the location or circumstance. 2

She was handled by Robbi Gulledge with BDK Kennels. There were 29 starters in the Open Limited with some very nice dogs competing. Indy finished her Field Championship with two wins and one second placement. All wins and placement were either in Open Limited stakes or dual sanctioned one hour Championships. Indy is out of FC/AFC Texas Cassino s Mad Cash and Hoosier Pepper. Congratulations to Indy and Robbi for a job well done. Kirk & Terry Bomer 3

6 Chemical Toxins In Bug & Flea Spray Barbara J. Andrews A 1993 a suit against Dow Chemical Co. charged that chemicals in Dursban, a flea and tick spray, caused severe damage to their unborn children. The Burke family of St. James, NY filed suit against Dow Chemical Company and Core Marketing, the company that produces Rid-A-Bug. Their suit charged that chemicals in the spray cross the placental barrier and caused severe damage to two of their unborn children. As you read this horror story, bear in mind that these toxic chemicals are still in use According to Wikipedia, the insecticide is still widely used in agriculture and "Dow continues to market Dursban for home use in developing countries. Dow claims "Dursban is safe for people" and in Iran, where it is widely marketed, that it has "an established record of safety regarding humans and pets." Perhaps we should pull our troops out and just send more bug spray! The Burkes first child was born with congenital cataracts, static encephalopathy (brain damage), hydrocephalus ("water on the brain"), and cerebral palsy, a medical term which covers a wide number of muscular and motor disorders. The wife was pregnant again before they suspected the magnitude of the problem or it's possible source. The Burke's dog Dino, came and went as he pleased. Concerned about tick-related disease, they regularly used Rid-A-Bug on the carpets. The flea and tick killer contains xylene (a solvent) and chlorpyifos; its trade name is Dursban and it is a neurotoxin. Not satisfied with do-it-yourself treatments, the Burkes decided to call in an exterminator who told them they would have to leave during the treatment. He warned them that the pesticide could harm youngsters and that Mrs. Burke, being pregnant, could also be at risk. This was the tip-off, raising horrible doubts for the Burke family. Sure enough, their second child was born with cataracts, severe brain damage, and cerebral palsy. There are many more details to this tragic story. The point is, we still don't know enough about short term exposure to certain chemicals (agent orange is a good example of scientific blundering) much less the long term effects on human health. And who is looking out for your pets? A report published in Home Mechanix reveals carpets not only attract and hold dirt, dust mites, mold spores and other micro-organisms, toxic pesticides, and even lead; they retain many of these contaminants in spite of meticulous vacuuming. In addition, wall-to-wall carpet must be cleaned with strong chemicals that may harm your children or pets. Remember, both children and pets are several feet closer to the floor and make full body contact with the carpet in addition to directly inhaling chemical content. A safer solution would be area carpeting, which can be removed and cleaned with safer products. continued.. 6

7 Dursban cont d. The development of highly toxic substances has enabled the United States to lead the world in agricultural production, but not without health costs. According to Jeffrey Brent, M.D. of the Rocky Mountain Poison Control Center in Denver, common pesticides such as Diazinon and Malathion can be particularly hazardous. Dr. Brent says that organophosphates "are more harmful to pets than fungicides or herbicides such as Chlorothalonil or Dicamba. Most herbicides are fairly harmless to most pets." Relying on product labels can be foolhardy. Ingredients may not have been tested for that use or approved by the appropriate agencies. If an ingredient is not specifically on the forbidden list, it may be used even though known to be toxic. Beware of lawn chemicals which are absorbed through your pet's paw pads. Never let your pets or children out to play in the yard when the grass is wet as this increases absorption. Acid rain can contaminate outside water buckets as well as lawn surfaces. Last but not least, approach new medicines and vaccines with caution until they have been proven in routine public use. If in doubt, do your own research on the internet because chemical and pharmaceutical companies spent $billons on both print and television advertising. Doctors and veterinarians are working desperately to inform parents and pet owners about the serious, often deadly health risks in vaccines. The chemical pesticide Dursban, long used for termite treatment, was banned and supposedly replaced by environmentally, safe natural products at the time of this writing. However, lawsuit after lawsuit and evasive action by Dow Chemical's battery of lawyers, delayed pulling these products from the market and they are still in use in agriculture and in other countries. Education is the key to prevention. Your pets and children depend on you to understand and eradicate the risks of chemical toxicity in their environment. 14 Policy For Reporting Wins, Scores and Placements: To have a win, score or placement count toward Dog of the Year standings it must be submitted to the statistician within three months of the event. Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for a Dog of the Year Award the principal owner of the dog must be a GCGSPC club member and either be exempt or help at 3 Club events. Only GSPs are eligible for Dog of the Year Awards. To be eligible for an AKC title plaque, the principle owner of the dog must be a GCGSPC club member and either be exempt or help at two Club events. All pointing breeds are eligible to earn title plaques. Dog s registered name, call name, breeder, name of title and date earned must be submitted to the statistician. Individuals holding an office or chairing or acting as secretary for any event or function (i.e., de-snaking, awards banquet, newsletter, webmaster, library, programs, rescue, Christmas party, etc.) will automatically be exempt from the requirement to help and eligible for any Dog of the Year award or title plaque. 15 Fading Puppies A Simple Solution Margo Carter, Phoenix Rising Toy Fox Terriers, 2005 A healthy, vigorous litter of pups is born. It s so satisfying to watch them as they squirm their way along the mother s body, latch on to a nipple and begin to suckle greedily. We can relax now the pups are fine and mom is fine the job is done. But wait, over the next couple of days, one or more pups develop the raspy sounds of inhalation pneumonia and quickly fade and die despite our many efforts. Sound familiar? I think fading puppy syndrome has happened to all breeders, especially those of us who breed Toys. Usually these puppies are perfectly healthy with no apparent physical problems. At the first signs of a rasp, I have looked for a cleft palate and if there is none, put the pup on Amoxicillin and tube fed when needed. Sometimes, the pup would pull through but more often, not. Fading puppies are heartbreaking and exhausting, but a fact of life for a breeder. I am most fortunate to have a veterinarian who listens. She takes the time to discuss diagnoses and treatment with me and we kick around ideas to find the best mainstream course of treatment and consider any alternatives. The last time I had a fading puppy, I had kept it alive for 5 days when I noticed it was very dehydrated. I was out of Ringer s so brought the pup in to the vet clinic for immediate treatment. We hydrated and tube fed the pup and I went home with a bag of Ringer s. I had been trying from the beginning to get the pup to nurse on mom, a syringe, a nipple, anything! but it refused to suck and had to be tube fed. The pup made it two more days. Frustrated, I stopped by the clinic after hours to discuss this latest "fading puppy" defeat with Dr. Amy. I brought up the problem of the pup not sucking and Amy told me that the swallow reflex is the first thing to go when an animal or human become dehydrated. She went on to say that, sadly, this is why so many elderly people in nursing homes die they become dehydrated, cannot swallow, liquid goes into the lungs rather than down the esophagus and inhalation pneumonia develops. Well, if I were a cartoon character, there would have been a huge light bulb over my head! How often do we check newborn puppies for dehydration? Think about it. Many times a pup crawls behind mom or she lies on one and it cannot get around her to nurse. If we see this, we pick up the pup and put it back in front with the others without checking for any signs of dehydration. The pup is wriggling, looks fine, but could very well be in the first stages of dehydration or what for lack of a better term, we call "fading puppy." Newborns can go downhill so quickly in the first few days. I talked this over with my vet and she agreed that this might actually be the answer to many cases where a seemingly healthy pup suddenly fails to thrive and just fades away despite our best efforts. Awareness of the connection between dehydration and inhalation pneumonia may help us save some of those healthy pups who inexplicably die. It takes only seconds to check for dehydration and only a few minutes for a quick tube feed which will put the pup back on track. If we make this a habit with newborn litters, we can give all the pups an equal chance at life and save ourselves a lot of heartbreak in the process. Just think how many lives, how many fading puppies we can save! 15
