4 Collections In this unit of work we will explore the notions of collecting and develop a body of work based on this theme. The project is basically in two distinct parts, although they can be linked or be kept totally separate. This theme will create the body of your AS portfolio. The initial work with Collections will be based on drawings and visual responses to objects, artefacts and memories based upon your chosen collection. The second task will be based on further research into a collection of your choice. This aspect should contain more focused independent investigation, especially in terms of artist references. This should be a totally personal response to the theme supported by the staff. Your final outcome will be a jacket based upon your chosen theme. We will try and organise a museum visit as inspiration for your research and you may collect ideas around labelling, presentation of collections and themes found in such institutions.

6 Critical Studies You will be guided to look at a range of artists who have worked with the theme of collections or whose work could be linked to this programme of study. Artists such as Frieda Kahlo portray themselves with collected objects. Peter Blake uses nostalgic objects to cover his canvases and he reminds us of the joy of childhood. Joseph Cornell made intriguing assemblages of objects as did Niki de Saint Phalle and the contemporary Damian Hirst has presented collections of objects as art with his pills and medicine work. 8 Summer Homework Over the summer holidays try to complete the following tasks. This will be included in your portfolio of work and will help you think about your chosen collection. 1. Produce a research board on the artist Joseph Cornell. Find key information, images and support your research with samples in the style of his work. 2. Create a research board on a designer of your choice who you admire. Focus upon at least two collections. Ensure you record your own opinions and document what the collections are about. Support this research with fabric samples in the style of their work. 3. If you have chance over the summer visit an art gallery or museum, collect postcards and take photos of your visit.
