Educators Resource Amy Sillman: Landline 28 September January 2019
Amy Sillman Landline Amongst the most distinctive voices in contemporary painting, Amy Sillman is exhibiting through all of the galleries at Camden Arts Centre for her first institutional exhibition in the UK. Over the last three decades, Sillman s wayward form of abstraction has pushed defiantly at the process-oriented approaches typically associated with the traditions of post-war American painting, infusing her work with a modern sensibility, a critical self-reflexivity, feminism and humour. Across all of the galleries, the depth and scope of Sillman s work is explored, ranging from the political and social to the emotional and psychological, encompassing gestural drawing, painting, silkscreen print processes, video and zines. In her expansive practice she extends painting out into the language and logic of other media and forms, and throughout the show works on canvas are brought into direct contact with animation, print and drawings, re-evaluating and complicating painting s histories and status. The title of the exhibition Landline points to Sillman s participation with outmoded forms and technologies (painting, printmaking, drawing) and suggests a commentary on painting itself as a form of communication. For Sillman, painting is always a time-based medium both in how it is made and in the experience of viewing it. In her large canvases time is registered, recorded and revealed in the layers of paint that are worked into and scraped back, washed over and built up again, creating densely layered surfaces where traces of past processes remain discernible. Some of these large oils take many months, or even years to make, moving through numerous iterations as compositions shift, change and evolve. Other paintings happen
Installation view of Amy Sillman: Landline, Camden Arts Centre, Photo: Damian Griffiths more quickly and in some of the large canvases Sillman has worked primarily in acrylic a medium that demands a different practice and approach, one that is closer to drawing or collage, as marks are laid down definitively and can only be covered, drawn or painted over. Amy Sillman (born 1955, Detroit) lives and works in New York City. Her works have been exhibited internationally in solo exhibitions and presented in countless group exhibitions at public institutions. Recent solo exhibitions include: the All-Over, Portikus Frankfurt (2016); Amy Sillman: Yes & No, Kunsthaus Bregenz (2015); Amy Sillman: One Lump or Two, ICA Boston ( ), Aspen Art Museum, Colorado and Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, NYC (both 2014). Since 2015 Sillman has held the position of Professor at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Main.
Suggested Tour Central Space Ovid, Metamorphoses In the Central Space is a collection of zines, produced by Sillman over the last 10 years and entitled The OG (standing for Original Gangster ). Sillman has described these zines as a flavour packet to her exhibitions and sees them as a device she can use to provide context to her work through different forms including jokes, diagrams, and essays among other things. Also in this space is an animation entitled After Metamorphosis. This animation is based on a work from 8AD by the Roman poet Ovid, entitled Metamorphoses. Sillman visually tracks the transformation of objects, people and animals into different forms. The transformations on display in this work mirror Sillman s working process, which she has likened to archaeology; when painting, Sillman generally spends many months working and reworking her surfaces, layering up her paint, scraping it back, adding in forms, peeling them back, then digging in to the surface of the paint to pull out or excavate forms. It s a process of continual change and discovery.

Suggested Tour Gallery 1 Amy Sillman
Suggested Tour Gallery 1 As you enter Gallery 1, you will see a video animation called Kick the Bucket and a series of works simply entitled Pink Drawings, displayed in a grid. This pairing reflects one of Sillman s more recent interests in the relationship and parallels between animation and painting, and ways of working across different formats to consider time, series, sequences and change. This gallery also introduces the notion of humour that runs throughout Sillman s work in the way that she combines abstract painting, jokes, animation and comic cartoons. Consider... Installation view of Amy Sillman: Landline Camden Arts Centre, Photo: Damian Griffiths How many layers can you see in the different works on display? How do you know when a painting or piece of creative work is finished? How do you feel these works display humour?
Suggested Tour Gallery 2 Throughout her work, Sillman introduces interruptions and change, often using figures or figurative forms arranged in awkward and unexpected poses to confront the otherwise abstract surfaces. In so doing, Sillman creates an interactivity and sense of association between the works, however she does not see this as an overall narrative. Amy Sillman Sillman gives a lot of consideration to the display and arrangement of her works. Sometimes she arranges them in grids or lines, trying to build a picture from ambiguous fragments, assembling and grouping them by form and colour. In Gallery 2 is a new series of work entitled Rebus for Camden which combines pieces from two separate series entitled Yellow Series and the Dub Stamps (more of which can be seen in Gallery 3). Amy Sillman, In Illinois, Courtesy of the artist. Photo: John Berens
Installation view of Amy Sillman: Landline, Camden Arts Centre, Photo: Damian Griffiths Consider... What do you think is happening in the Rebus for Camden series? How do the different works speak to each other or interact with one another? Select a painting in Gallery 2 and complete a mental excavation of it: consider what colours, shapes and forms might be buried beneath the top layer of paint. Are there any shapes that suggest a familiar form to you?
Suggested Tour Gallery 3 Gallery 3 is dedicated to a sitespecific display of works from Sillman s 2018 series of works entitled the Dub Stamps. These works combine screen-printing, painting and drawing in an entirely new format for the artist. The series is a continuation from earlier drawings which Sillman used as a way to channel her feelings of shock, horror and distress in the aftermath of Donald Trump s election as president of the USA. In this series, Sillman works on both sides of huge, five-foot sheets of paper on one side are stylised figures which appear to be silently screaming, vomiting and arched in spasms of pain, disgust or perhaps despair. The other sides of these paper works are dedicated to more abstract images. Amy Sillman
Installation view of Amy Sillman: Landline, Camden Arts Centre, Photo: Damian Griffiths Consider... What feels urgent to you today? What would you make an artwork about?
Activities Take a closer look at the Rebus for Camden series of works in Gallery 2. Think about what is happening in the individual pieces and across the series as a whole. Sillman has described the individual frames of these works as prodding and nudging one another. Create a list of verbs or actions that link the works or describe the way they interact with one another.
Activities Using an ipad or pencil and paper, create an endless drawing. Try and draw without planning or over-thinking your forms and ideas. Morph shapes, layer-up your ideas, draw over forms or perhaps rub out, scribble over and block out sections of the page. If you re struggling, ask yourself some what if questions such as: What if I tried to draw something funny? What if I tried to draw a serious feeling? What if this wasn t the end point?
Activities Sillman describes a zine as a fast and furious form of public/private address. Using the instructions on the insert, create your own mini-zine. Installation view of Amy Sillman: Landline Camden Arts Centre, Photo: Damian Griffiths
