2 Course Description The specification encourages candidates to take a broad view of fashion and textiles, to develop their capacity to make innovative products and to learn skills of pattern cutting and garment construction, to learn about creative approaches to design and therefore build up an extensive fashion and textiles portfolio. The course prepares students to enter a variety of degree level courses in subjects related to Art and Design, Fashion and Textiles. Year 1 The first year of the course is designed to broaden your skills and knowledge of textiles techniques through workshops and practical activities. You will also be improving your recording and presenting skills through using a sketchbook and taking fashion drawing lessons. You will be combining all of these new skills into a final design and make project in the last term. Year 2 You will be working on a personal investigation project that will form the coursework unit of the course and contribute to 60% of your final grade. There will then be an exam project which will be completed under controlled conditions and this will be the remaining 40% of your final grade at A level.

3 Specification aims The aim of this specification is to encourage students to: Acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding as well as language needed to create, develop and present high quality work. Understand art and design methods and principles. Use primary and secondary sources. Understand how creative focuses are inter-related and influence each other. Explore working methods linked to industry practice. Develop practical skills, techniques and processes to a standard that allows progression to further studying or training. Independently explore how meaning is communicated through creative and reflective experimentation with media and materials. Develop ways of working that emphasize practical independence, self-directed learning and how to improve practice over time.

4 Summer Tasks All of the summer tasks are designed to show you ways of exploring a given theme. This year the theme is BENEATH THE SURFACE. Sketch book 1 : Structure/Texture/colour Collect and make images that explore the theme. The sketchbook is a place for you to try out ideas and to scribble down thoughts. Take your sketchbook with you on trips out, holidays, the shops, a walk round your garden or the local rubbish dump. ANYWHERE and look for ideas all around you. As you record these experiences in your sketchbook, add in text of key words that come to mind when you are researching and/or key words that were present in your mind at the time of recording. Again, more interesting sketchbooks are created this way. Sketchbook Task 2 : History of Fashion A] How have undergarments changed over time to create new and varying fashion silhouettes? Can you find images and make drawings of underwear and undergarments that give an insight into how the fashion shapes were created. B] Choose two twentieth century designers working at a similar time who have produced fashion that interests you. Make three double page spreads of research in your sketchbook about these designers and their design methods, what was their inspiration? HOW did they achieve their design ideas? What were their key collections? Why are their designs famous at all? Suggestions for contrasting designers Christian Dior and Rei Kawakubo Jean Paul Gaultier and Calvin Klein Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto Vivienne Westwood and Cristobal Balenciaga

5 Research methodology for Fashion Take out books from the library about the designer and Artist you are researching, read them. Now use what you have learned to further your research using the internet. It is ESSENTIAL that you approach the task in this way. Visit exhibitions and galleries that link to the designer or artist that you are interested in. As you present this your work in your sketchbook (and make sure it is as visual as possible) it is important to remember that primary research is the key to an authentic interpretation. How could you interpret the theme? Begin a mind map below.

6 Expectations and Workload We expect pupils to keep to deadlines at all times. We will not consider any request for added time. Students are expected to use their study time in order to advance projects and to use equipment that they cannot access at home. We expect each student to have their own sewing and drawing equipment to facilitate working on your projects out of lesson time, please see items on resources list. Make visits to museums, exhibitions and art galleries, in order to broaden their creative experiences. To arrive on time to lessons and to explain any absences, while also understanding that any coursework deadlines missed need to be caught up. We expect every student to keep A3 sketch books to record research. This is extremely valuable as all Art colleges will require to see them on application. We expect highly individual and innovative ideas We expect the use of CAD/CAM where appropriate. At times we expect the students to prepare and deliver presentations to their group, based on research findings.

7 Outline of Essential Skills To be able to transfer knowledge and skills from one part of the subject area to another. To be pro-active and innovative in your approach to design. To analyse collected data, synthesise and then draw relevant conclusions from it. To be able to describe relevant information in detail giving clear examples. To use ICT skills to explore design software so that you can experiment with a range of different media and communicate ideas well. To know how to use the textile equipment, skilfully applying both, quality control and quality assurance. To organise relevant information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate. To be able to write legibly, using correct grammar and punctuation. To persevere until solutions are found. To demonstrate problem-solving skills. To recognise and adopt sound organisational skills. To be able to self-motivate, and become a good independent learner. To be able to undergo independent study.

10 Resources/equipment All fashion/ textiles students need to get into the habit of collecting pictures, different types of paper, fabrics, trimmings, threads, yarns, Textures different media etc. that could be used in design presentation and sampling work. You should be in the habit of visiting specialist fabric and trimmings shops, charity shops, jumble sales, online suppliers, skips, hardware stores etc, etc. Kit List You will need the following items in order to present your work, any additional equipment is your own choice and students are encouraged to explore as many media as possible. Buy a small tool box (available at B&Q type shops) with different sized compartments. Design equipment Three sketch books A4 size, ring bound Two note books, any size A small set of water colour paints and a variety of brushes Drawing/fine liner pens in a couple of thicknesses. A bottle of quink fountain pen ink in dark blue. A tippex pen. A range of drawing pencils. A pencil sharpener and a decent rubber. Pritt stick, staple and masking tape. Sponges.

11 Resources/equipment What you will need To work well you need to have the proper kit, your equipment will last you for years if you buy carefully and look after everything properly. Making Equipment DECENT Fabric Scissors, a pair that fit your hand and can be sharpened regularly to keep them top notch. Look at Morplan for a good range. Small pair of VERY sharp thread snips or embroidery scissors. Paper scissors for pattern making. Selection of hand needles in different sizes, in a needle case. Tailors chalk. A dress maker s tape measure, 2H pencils for pattern making. A thimble that fits the middle finger on the hand that you write with. A Pattern master. Fine or glass head dress maker s pins. An unpicker. Bobbins (plastics and metal)
