1 Competition Brief Competition title and level Visual Merchandising Competition This competition requires you to submit a portfolio of creative window display designs, in response to the given brief which will demonstrate your skills and creative ability. Work is required to be submitted digitally via Dropbox. Six successful competitors will be selected by industry judges to realise their window designs at the Skills Competition Wales final on the 4th of December 2018 at Coleg Sir Gar s, Jobswell Campus. This competition is open to students up to level 5, the window will be judged on the merit alone rather than the student s level. Entry requirements Application All students have to register online via the Skills Wales website by 20 th October 2018, 5pm. Window Display Submission This is an individual exercise. Creative responses to the brief should be ed using Dropbox. Please ensure that your file is clearly labelled in the following format: Visual Merchandising Competition 2018 YOUR NAME and share the folder - To : KCameron@cavc.ac.uk Deadline for submission is 12 th November, 2018 by 5pm. Competition Six successful candidates will be notified by the 16 th November, 2018 by of their place in the finals. The final will take place on the 4th December, 2018.

2 Competition outline Design Brief This brief is designed to test your creativity and understanding of Visual Merchandising Window Display design and will be used to select students for entry into the final Skills Competition Wales on the 4th December, Title Theme: Sculpt and Curve Inspiration: Selfridges Window displays, Vivienne Westwood, Stephen Jones and Alexander McQueen (Sarah Burton). Additional information Based on the given theme and the above influential designers, design a window proposal for December This could be a winter window or an early Christmas display. All the elements must work together to communicate the theme Sculpt and Curve to the selected target customer, a 25-year-old fashion blogger looking for that perfect December Instagram photo. The market is fast fashion/high street. Competitors will need to imagine a window concept inspired by the theme and designers above, incorporating props and materials chosen from the list below. Submission 2 x Mood Boards; Referencing the following o Inspirational images o Colour palette o Materials and props (see list attached materials and props list for further detail) 1 x Drawing and Development Board; Demonstrating your ideas and thought processes. 1 x Window Visual; In response to the brief candidates must present their design in colour, from the front view of the window using one mannequin, materials and props chosen. (Window template provided if needed) A Written Description; A maximum of 300 words to describe the window proposal and how it fits the design brief. Candidates will need to print the window template provided A3 size and one standard fashion mannequin A4 size to achieve the relevant scale relationship. Your work can be hand drawn, collaged or processed in CAD.

3 On competition day A general pre-competition briefing will be given, exampling the materials that competitors will be expected to use in their window along with a surprise object. The briefing will also communicate health and safety and general house-keeping rules. Competitors will set up their work-station and test all equipment before the competition starts. Questions will be facilitated. Competitors will have between 10am 4pm to construct their display. The judges will have the opportunity to ask the competitors any questions for clarification on their designs. Feedback from the judges can be given to each competitor after the award ceremony. Competitors are advised to bring protective or old clothing! The detail Standard equipment and materials available for each competitor on the day of the competition 3D constructed Window box (height 236cm, width 230cm, depth 115cm) to realise the 2D design A work table Staple gun / craft knife Drill and screws Large ball of string Fishing wire One surprise prop (all competitors will need to introduce this to their design on the day)

4 5 wooden coat hangers Masking tape A3 white cartridge paper (50 sheets max) Iron and ironing board Selection of cardboard Material and Prop Selection (you need to use at least four of the items listed below) One white standard female mannequin One black t-shirt and black leggings (to be creatively embellished / manipulated on the day) One white t-shirt and white leggings (to be creatively embellished / manipulated on the day) Aluminium foil Gold spray paint Sliver spray paint Pale pink tissue paper Burgundy tissue paper 5 metres of white fabric 3 x 30cm white sphere paper light shades Vinyl matte emulsion paint pale pink and burgundy (2 Litres) 5 meters of white wadding 5 hoola hoops Marking and assessment Competitors taking part in this competition will be assessed on the following: Research: The ability to research trends, target customer and themes: to be applied to a window concept. Design: The ability to design a window concept through sketches and/or computer images. Designing mood boards: Innovative thinking and design concept development. Design and make of simple propping and graphics. Communication: The ability to communicate your ideas visually. Problem solving: The ability to work to a set brief and think on your feet. Organisation: The ability to work under pressure, manage your time and processes. Work in a safe and tidy way. Prepare product: clean and iron, for example. Handle product and props to install in a window display. Ability to handle basic tools: such as a staple gun and drill. The following marking criteria will be used by two independent industry judges, to select the six candidates from the digital submission stage and the three finalists in the live competition.

Submit all of the requirements at all stages of the competition. Ensure all work is self-generated and original. Refrain from using offensive or controversial images or text.
