1 Unit 5: Product Design Portfolio/Project Appendix 3: Design Portfolio 20% Mark Descriptors Amplification of Mark Descriptors Mark Band 1)A design opportunity described or problem identified, including a specification The problem clearly identified or the design opportunity described A detailed and relevant specification A clear understanding and full description of the design opportunity/problem situation; A detailed specification which identifies the main points; legibility are excellent; are used appropriately at all times. Candidates are expected to: Include the chosen theme; Articulate a description of the Design Opportunity including the Design Brief; Include a detailed specification which identifies the key aspects of the Product requirements to resolve the brief. 2) Research/Analysis Evidence of research and analytical skills that are relevant to the client s brief or identified problem Good research and analytical skills appropriate to the problem including clear and detailed annotation; Good use of reference materials showing connections to the problem; legibility are excellent; Show evidence of research of product designs/existing solutions justifying your reasons for selection using clear annotation; Show a depth of analysis of the research/reference materials; For example reference may be focused on materials, design, form, appeal, function, safety, performance etc of the product/stimulus; If mood boards are used as a stimulus candidates are expected to state how this resource has influenced their thinking. are used appropriately at all times. 1

2 3) Concept Sketches Graphics and annotation used to communicate ideas clearly A range of quality concept sketches that show creativity, and imagination including detailed annotation; Show a range of (three) concept sketches of proposed product designs including annotation; Show a depth of knowledge and understanding of how the products may work; Example: If the brief is to design an educational toy the candidates should describe/show how learning is enhanced. Show using sketches and annotation how the research materials have inspired, influenced and connects to the concepts; Produce a range of graphical techniques to illustrate ideas - 2D, Sectional, exploded, pictorial, scrap sketches showing details, etc ) Development of idea(s) including fabrication details Designing for manufacture showing the assembly details. Development of the chosen idea showing most of the assembly detail. Show development of the proposed product design; This should include further ideas/ suggestions where appropriate to enhance the design/s; Reference connections to research; Show using graphics and annotation how parts fit together/assembly details; Identify appropriate materials and justify reasons for use; Card models where appropriate and or 3D CAD may be used to clarify ideas, estimate dimensions, proportion, etc, of the product details; 7 10 NB: Deeper thinking skills showing attention to details of how the product will be assembled and fit purpose for use is expected for top marks. 2

3 5) Working Drawing(s) including details of jigs/templates Quality working drawing(s) showing most of the details necessary for manufacture. Produce detailed working orthographic drawing/s in 3 rd angle. This should include: Elevations of the main parts drawn to BSI; The key dimensions necessary to manufacture these part/s; A materials list; The convention for third angle; A drawing scale; The key parts balloon referenced. Include details necessary for manufactured templates, jigs and formers etc NB: The orthographic drawing may be produced either using a drawing board or by using 2D CAD. 6) An Evaluation - with suggested modifications. A detailed evaluation that demonstrates a depth of thought with valid modifications legibility are Excellent are used appropriately at all times Produce a constructive evaluation of the chosen product including reference to their specification; Comment upon testing of the product. For example how well does it work? Is it safe for the user/s? Suggest improvements, modifications that may be implemented to improve performance; Sketches, photographs, models etc, are considered good practice. NB: However candidates are not expected to produce photographic evidence of how the product is manufactured. 3

4 NB: The selection of an appropriate product to design is an important first step. The product should be designed by each student and vary in outcome in the one class; Constraints within the theme approach may be used. However the theme must accommodate a range of unique design outcomes; For example if candidates design a shop window display for watches each design should be uniquely different. Holistic assessment will be based upon each candidate s ability to satisfy the requirements of the Mark Descriptors. It is expected that the product manufactured will include a range of processes; Consideration will be given when setting the coursework standard to the controlled assessment time when manufacturing the product using hand skills. The product may be constructed using one or more materials / an appropriate material/s. The Product Design portfolio should consist of (10) A3, pages only. 4

5 Manufacturing (20%): Product Design Mark Descriptors General Description Amplification of Mark Descriptors Mark Bands The assessment of the project should be based on holistic marking, given the subjective nature of this type of work. Excellent The product/system incorporates a wide range of Processes; Excellent skills demonstrating precision and accuracy of fabrication techniques; High quality and appropriate finishing techniques. Candidates are expected to: Demonstrate manufacturing techniques that reflect the standard and complexity expected at this level; Use of appropriate materials, processes and techniques that satisfy the design specification; Include templates, jigs, formers, etc, that assist in the manufacturing processes; Show quality in finishing, accuracy and attention to detail; Produce a product that works. NB: The Principal Moderator/moderating team will set the standard of manufacturing capability based upon the controlled assessment time allocated for manufacturing using hand skills
