Chan G125b, G126ai, G127ai; CSS 1346a, 1347a, 1348a. HK$ 150, ,000 The $65,500,000 franking on this envelope was the Gold Yuan equivalent of the then Silver Yuan postage for an international registered airmail letter, Silver Yuan $0.60 (assuming a weight of 10 grams or less), an exchange rate of almost 110,000,000:1. It was only after Silver Yuan currency was adopted on 28 April that the very high value stamps became necessary to accommodate the plummeting value of the Gold Yuan. On 27 April, the cost of this letter (again assuming a weight of 10 grams or less) would have been Gold Yuan $56,000. The addressee of this envelope, Robert McClure ( ), was a Canadian who grew up in China and, after the completion of his medical studies in Toronto, he then went back to China where he spent the next 25 years providing medical services and setting up rural medical systems. A missionary as well as a doctor, he left China in 1948 ahead of the Communists coming to power and later worked in, among other places, Gaza, India, Borneo, Peru and Zaire. See lot 3547 for an envelope relating to Robert McClure. 112

A fine postliberation use of a Nationalist Provincial Unit stamp before Communist stamps became available, sent from a military postal facility, and using the Nationalist Minguo 39 convention to designate Chan S119; CSS HK$ 15,000-20,000 Although we do not have information on the specific date of liberation of Nanshanzhen, it is located almost directly between Jianmenguan (the pass which fell to Communist forces on the night of December 17) and Chengdu (the fall of which on December 27 brought to an end the Chengdu Campaign). It would thus appear to have been liberated between those two dates. The first and only Zhongjiang local surcharge was not issued until February (23 Feb.) envelope to Kunming bearing rouletted Domestic Ordinary orange Unit stamp, cancelled by Yunnan, Kaiyuan dotted rim c.d.s., with another strike alongside, and Kunming machine roller arrival cancellation (25.2) on the reverse, fine and appealing post-liberation usage of a Nationalist Unit stamp prior to Communist stamps becoming available. Chan S1; CSS HK$ 8,000-10,000 While Yunnan Province was peacefully liberated on 9 December 1949, Communist stamps for use in Yunnan were not issued until 14 February, and then only in Kunming. It is probable that the Kunming overprinted stamps had not yet reached Kaiyuan (more than 150 km to the south) by 23 February. Nationalist stamps, whether or not overprinted or surcharged by Communist authorities, continued to be used in Yunnan through 20 March
