A scarce and well illustrated World War I publication also containing an account of the Battle of the Falkland Islands, written by the father of the well-known television presenter Official Seals: The first Official Seal used during the reign of Queen Victoria, an impression in red wax on piece (80 x 84mm.) with paper overlay. In addition to the Royal Arms and inscription VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR. REG. F.D./FALKLAND ISLANDS, the design depicts a wild bull and other cattle with H.M.S. Hebe in the background. Rare. 2 The Franks 307 THE BLACK FRANK: 1874 (Feb. 16) double rate official envelope sent by the Postmaster, George Travis to his daughter in Lincolnshire, with the Frank and ms. 1/- at right, despatch datestamp and red Liverpool Packet transit of Apr. 1 at lower left and next day arrival backstamp, carried first on the Black Hawk and from Montevideo on the Cotopaxi. Coleman, Secretary of the Falkland Islands Company in London, with the Frank at right unusually overstruck by despatch datestamp, ms. rating 6 and Paid, and with red arrival backstamp of June 18, having been carried on the Black Hawk to Montevideo and thence on the Sorata. The manuscript note Coffin s 14 May 77 added at upper left by Coleman indicates that the sender was Lieutenant Coffin, in command of the detachment of Royal Marines which was shortly after replaced by a police force, Coffin leaving the islands on July 2nd. Volage, carried on the Black Hawk to Montevideo and thence on the Tagus, with London transit and Portsmouth May 15 arrival backstamps, also a reproduction photograph of the Volage. A unique item, the earliest recorded use of an adhesive stamp from the Falkland Islands. Ex Barton. Photo. 2,000-2, Early Incoming Mail: 1897 (Jan. 11) envelope from Cury Cross Lanes (Cornwall) addressed to Colonel Lewis of the Royal Engineers, endorsed Via Tilbury and franked at the 2½d. rate, with Mullion transit backstamp and Feb. 11 arrival datestamp, having been carried on the Abydos, some peripheral tears and minor stains. Colonel Lewis was staying at Government House, having arrived in the islands on Dec. 10, 1896 to report on whether Port Stanley or Port Edgar might serve as a naval coaling station. Ex Barton. Totmes (Sept ), envelope to Mrs. Clethero in Norfolk, franked by 1d. red-brown strip of three, one bisected, tied by cork cancellations (Barnes 1/90) with light despatch datestamp below and fine Wymondham c.d.s. of Oct. 20 at left, a further c.d.s. from the day before and Attleborough the day after on the reverse, together with the ms. notes Opened by Mrs Clethero/of Bunhall not for/her and Try Bunwell indicate that the address had first been misread and struggled to reach its intended recipient, filing folds and slight soiling.
