2 Dear Collector, Welcome to our first Central and Southern Africa list of There is a wealth of attractive new material to peruse. From Natal there is a fresh range of Chalons, including varieties and a most unusual usage of the d. on 4d. Telegraph issue postally used on cover. The offering of New Republic remains strong and contains some important rarities, with many new items added to stock in recent months. This is a rare opportunity for collectors of this interesting and short lived Boer Republic as the current range is the best we have had for many years. The tete-beche pairs and inverted arms varieties are particularly desirable. South African Railway Officials made their debut in Part One in recent years and plenty of gems from this interesting and popular area are contained within this list. The d. Block of four is a particularly impressive item and is offered alongside a number of rare multiples. Orange Free state has a wide array of fresh material with particular strength in the most attractive Postal Fiscal issue of Multiples and varieties, particularly on the telegraph issues are difficult to find and the list contains a number of better positional pieces. Last but of course not least are the ever popular Boer War Army Telegraph issues which we have not had available for at least two years. Deceptively difficult to find in fine quality (particularly in sets and multiples!), they never stay in stock for long so order early to avoid disappointment! Both without external margins, and odd minor imperfections (one stamp in the second block with an ink spot), but unique and fascinating multiples, in remarkably fine condition. [The die proof of the type F3 design included the unwanted hyphen, which then appears to have been removed from every other position on the plate as originally manufactured, with R1/5 overlooked. We are not aware of such a corrective procedure being employed by De La Rue on any other plate for typographic printing. But a comparable problem was detected in 1948 with the recess vignette plate for the I.F.S. The piece shows sufficient traces of the address (as well as part Basingstoke arrival cds of NO 4 00 ) to identify it as from the correspondence between Capt Noel Llewellyn (BSAP police) and Mrs Hoare. The Rustenburg stamp with rounded corner (and the others with faults) but a fascinating and desirable usage. All the catalogue-listed, main number, shades of the Rhodesia Admirals and Double Heads are included as are ordinary and chalk-surfaced papers. Spaces are included for changes of watermark, paper and, perforation, die and type changes but excluding inverted and/or reversed watermarks, errors and shades. Stanley Gibbons has kindly approved the use of their catalogue numbers and additional images have been provided by Tracinda publications. Oval despatch ds on upper flap (which would open for display). Filing fold and slight opening faults on reverse, but a very neat and appealing usage, with any cover with the 4d De La Rue much scarcer than is often realised.
