1 The Conversion Game Beginning on Day 26, students will play variations on the Conversion Game for warm-ups. As part of the game, students will convert units of time, measurement, and base-ten in order to move around a game board and score points. The game has several components that require a significant amount of time to prepare. The materials needed are listed below. The game boards will need to be printed on " by 7" paper; because of the limitations of this document, they are provided here in proportionally smaller form for you to resize using a photocopier. The boards will be used repeatedly and should be laminated. Materials Conversion Game Boards, printed out on " by 7" paper and laminated one set of game boards (base-ten, time, and measurement variations) for each student group of 4 Conversion Game Board transparency for use when demonstrating the game to students Copies of How to Play the Conversion Game ( per group; the same set of rules may be used for each variation) six-sided number cube per group; tape over the 6 and write on the tape Game cards for each variation, printed on card stock and cut out ahead of time (See Cards for the Conversion Game teacher page and card templates in Unit for instructions.) Card stock or colored paper sufficient to print out enough cards for each game variation and student group Attribution and Research The Conversion Game was developed by Valerie N. Faulkner, Coordinating Teacher for Special Education Services for Wake County, NC, public schools, based on research from the following sources: Griffin, S. (25). 3 NAME: UNIT 4 LINEAR FUNCTIONS How to Play the Conversion Game There are three ways to play Conversion: converting in base-ten, converting units of time, and converting units of measurement. These rules apply to all three versions. Option Pick a total amount before the beginning of the game. The player who gets to that total first wins. For instance, in the base-ten version game, the first player to get to 5 tens wins. The goal must be decided ahead of time. Option 2 Designate a given amount of game time. The player with the highest total at the end of that time wins. It is best if you end with all players having gone the same amount of turns, so end with the last player before you determine the winner. Manner of Play Everyone rolls a number cube to determine who goes first. The player with the highest roll goes first. No other rolls matter. Play proceeds clockwise from the highest player on. The first player rolls the number cube, and then proceeds that many steps along the circuit. Note: It is best to have a number cube that shows 5 and then tape over the 6. Have the tape represent. This helps students to understand better how one proceeds on a number line. You do not move if you roll. You move one if you roll. Circuit Cards At the top of each circuit, the player collects a circuit card. These cards are located in the center of the circuit. The circuit card keeps track of how many times the player has been around the board in a conversion unit up. For instance, if you have been around the board once, or spaces in the base-ten game, the conversion card says ten. In the time game, it will say. If a player goes backward and passes the top of the circuit, they must return a circuit card to the pile. If a player has no circuit cards and goes backward past the circuit top, there are no consequences. Conversion Cards If the player lands on a half-way point, he/she picks up a conversion card. These cards are located on either side of the board. Place half of the pile on one side and half the pile on the other side, so cards are accessible to all players. The conversion card directs the player to take extra steps. Conversions may be necessary. For instance, a card may say move ½ of a ten, or it may say move ¼. The player will need to convert that into the appropriate moves on the board (5 ones; 5 ). Players pick up a circuit card if they complete a circuit. Note: If a player picks a move backward one (unit) (one ten, or one ), he/she will be landing again on the half-way mark. The player must turn in a circuit card because he/she has gone backward. The player then chooses another conversion card because he/she will be back on the half-way mark. Claiming the Win The winner must claim the win by converting his/her circuit cards into the unit of the game board. For instance, a student who thinks she has won the base-ten version because she has 5 tens cards can claim her win by saying 5 tens equals 5 ones. 6
