2 Teacher/Parent Instructions for BUGS & Butterflies Playful literacy and math activities about bugs and butterflies. Note: To read a blog post (including helpful photos) of these activities, click here. Note: The activities in this packet perform best when printed on cardstock. For heavy use, consider laminating as well. Note: To complete the activities in this packet, you need a package of assorted plastic bugs. Most dollar stores and discount stores carry them. To play: Follow the step-by-step directions written on each activity sheet.
3 Name ABC TRACING Directions: Starting at the top of each letter, trace it carefully with your pencil.

5 Name B u g R a c e s Directions: Roll the bug die. Put an X or trace the word above the bug that lands on top. The first bug to reach the top wins the race. spider bee ant dragonfly spider bee ant dragonfly spider bee ant dragonfly spider bee ant dragonfly spider bee ant dragonfly
6 Directions: Cut along the outside border of the die below. Then fold along the inner lines and tape the ends together to make a playing die. Lose a turn. ant bee dragonfly spider Roll again.
7 Beginning Sound Bug Sort Directions: 1. Ask children to say the name of each bug on the sorting mat: ant, dragonfly, grasshopper and bee. 2. Then, have them name the first sound in each word: /a/, /d/, /g/, /b/. 3. Give the players the stack of picture circles. Ask them to say the name and first sound of one of the pictures. For instance, Apple, /a/. 4. Have them lay the card on the bug that starts with the same sound. {Apple would lay on ant because they both start with /a/.} 5. Ask players to continue sorting by first sound until all cards have been sorted.
8 Syllable Bug Sort Directions: 1. Ask children to say the name of each bug on the sorting mat: ant, spider and dragonfly. 2. Then, have them clap out the syllables in each word: ant {I syllable}, spi-der {2 syllables}, dra-gon-fly {3 syllables}. 3. Give the players the stack of picture circles. Ask them to say the name and syllables of one of the pictures. For instance, Apple. A-pple. 2 syllables.. 4. Have them lay the card on the bug that has the same number of syllables. {Apple would lay on spider because they both have 2 syllables.} 5. Ask players to continue sorting by syllables until all cards have been sorted

12 B u g S o r t Directions: Grab a pile of bugs. Use the mat below to sort them into two groups: bugs with wings and bugs without wings. Wings No Wings

15 0 Bug Counting Mat Directions: Place one bug in each empty square. What number has the most? What number has the least?
16 1 2 3 Directions: Cut along the grey line to separate the cards. Then, invite children to play one of several ways: Mix up the number cards and have children arrange them in 1,2,3 order. Lay the number cards out in 1,2,3 order and have children place the matching bug card underneath each number. Spread the cards out face down on a flat surface. Have players take turns flipping over two cards at a time as they try to find matching pairs of number and bug cards {ex. 1 and the bee}. Each time a player finds a pair, he adds it to his winning pile. The player with the most matches when all cards have been claimed is the winner.
