3 We use these activities during our Word Work time for Daily 5. We have used them as literacy stations in the past as well. We give each student a choice board on Monday. We explain each activity and show the students an example. Then students are allowed to choose any station activity they prefer. They will work the entire designated work time. Some students may finish more than 1 station and that is great. They all know that they MUST complete a MINIMUM of 5 activities by Friday. All activities work on the short e sound so it s ok if they don t get to everything! Station 1: Short e Book: Students draw a picture on each page of a word that uses the short e sound. Then label the picture in the space below. Challenge: Students will write sentences about the pictures they draw. Station 2: Label, Cut, and Glue: Students color the pictures that have the short e sound in the word. Then they cut them out, glue them to the mat, and label each word. Challenge: Same activity with more challenging words to spell (spelling patterns, syllables...). Station 3: Word Search: Students will illustrate the pictures with the short e sound, find in the word search, then write a sentence. Challenge: Same activity with more challenging words. Station 4: Short e Bingo: Students will look at each picture and label. If the word has a short e, then they will color it. Can they find 3 in a row? Station 5: Short e Cube Game: Roll the cube. Add sounds to the short e word endings to build words. Who will fill in their grid first? Challenge: Same activity using syllables instead of word families. Station 6: Pound, Tap, and Stamp: Students will pound the word with their fist, then tap each individual sound. After that, students will stamp the beginning sound and write the words in the boxes. Then students will write a sentence about one of the pictures. Challenge: Same activity with more challenging words. Station 7 Picture Sort: Have students sort the pictures onto the correct side (short e or long e). Have them label the pictures. Challenge: This sheet has multi-syllable short e words. Station 8: Back to Back Game: Students sit back to back with a partner. They draw a card from the bag. They give clues to their partner to help them guess the short e word on the card. Station 9: Mystery Square: Use the letters in the square to build short e words. Can you find 10? CHALLENGE: Stations 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 have additional pages that use the same activity but with HIGHER skill levels needed to complete them. FREEBIE: Make it, Paint it, Tear it! Students can use art materials, paint, or torn paper to make a short e picture. Then write a sentence to tell about their creation. Challenge: Write a STORY about your picture. Not on choice board. FREEBIE: Morning Work and Letter Writing Practice -Not on choice board. FREEBIE: Vocabulary Cards and Ideas for Use!! FREEBIE: Dictation: Formative assessment found at the end of the pack. 41 We use the cards for a variety of skill work. The game is always the same format, but we switch the skill to work on whatever our students needs are at that time. Game Play: Give each student a vocabulary card. Have them walk or dance around the room to music. When you pause the music, they will stop and find the nearest partner. They will use their cards to work on whatever skill you have assigned. For example, we have assigned rhyming words. Students show their card, the partner reads the card, and then has to say a word that rhymes! Then the other partner gets a turn. Start the music again and continue to play finding new partners each time the music stops. Skills we work on: Rhyming words (Say the word and 1 or 2 words that rhyme.) Sentences (Say a detailed sentence using the vocabulary word.) Syllables (Clap and say how many syllable are in the word.) Blending (Cover the picture and blend to read.) 2013 Created by Kindergarten Squared
