This math craftivity works well as a 5 day project. Day 1: Have students cut out and assemble their leprechauns Day 2-4: Using the gold coin cut outs and/or ten frames, have students solve word problems from the Pot of Gold Task Cards. Day 5: Students will write their own word problem or solve the word problem from the template, Leprechaun Pot of Gold. (slides #23-29)
Leprechaun Craft Preparation Materials Needed: glue, scissors, black, green (dark and light), white, orange, yellow construction paper Optional ( pink, red, orange pom-poms for nose) Copy or trace from the templates provided. 1 9 x 6 green (dark or light) construction paper (per student) 2 peach or tan circle for face (per student) 2 peach or tan hands (per student) 2 white arms (per student) 2 9 x 2 white stripes of construction paper for legs (per student) 2 9 x 2 orange or green strip of construction paper for stripes on legs (per student) 2 shoes green (per student) 1 6 x 1 strip of black construction paper for belt (per student) 2 orange beard (per student) 3 dark green, light green, or black hat (per student) 2 1 x 1 ½ yellow rectangles for belt and shoe buckles (per student) 1 shamrock (per student) scrap of white and black for eyes scrap of orange from beard for eyebrows scrap of pink for nose or pom-pom
Leprechaun Craft Directions 1. Give one large green rectangle to each student. 2. Put the green rectangle in front of you like a hotdog. Have students cut a V shape out of the center of the bottom edge of the rectangle to make pants. 3. Pass out head, arms, beard, hat, legs and shoes. 4. Cut out head. 5. Cut our beard. Cut slits around the bottom edge to make it look like hair. 6. Glue beard to the bottom of the head. 7. Glue head and beard to green rectangle (on the top edge without the V cut out of it.) 8. Cut out hat. 9. Glue hat on top of head. 10. Cut out arms. 11. Glue arms to the back of the green rectangle with the straight part of the sleeve hanging out and the round part being glued to top of green rectangle.
Leprechaun Craft Directions (continued) 11. Cut out hands. 12. Glue hands to the back of the arms under the sleeve. 13. Use the colored 9 x 2 strip and cut stripes for the legs. 14. 12 Pot of Gold Math Craft Preparation Materials Needed: glue, scissors, black, white, green, yellow, gray construction paper, and optional dry erase markers Copy or trace from the templates provided x 18 white construction paper (per student) 1 large black pot gray and yellow coins (enough to solve problem) Directions: Have students cut out the black pot Glue pot to the top half of the 12 x18 white construction paper. Glue the word problem worksheet to the bottom half of the white construction paper. Add yellow and/or gray coins to the pot which solves the problem. (the answer)
large black pot- 1 per student for Leprechaun Math Activity
yellow and gray coins for craft and manipulatives
Directions for Math Activities Days 2-4 Pot of Gold Task Cards Word problem task cards can be laminated for an independent center or for a teacher directed small group lesson. Copy the coin template on yellow construction paper. Students can cut coins out to use as manipulatives. For younger students, I suggest cutting the coins out for them. Using the coins as manipulatives, have students solve the addition and subtraction problems on the Pot of Gold Task Cards. You may also give each student a copy of the ten frame (slide#22). We suggest either laminating it or putting it into a plastic page protector so students may solve problems by crossing out coins or coloring in the coins with dry erase markers. We have included a Task Card Recording Sheet for use at independent centers. Day 5 Making the Pot of Gold Math Craft Copy or trace the pot of gold on to black construction paper. Students cut out pot of gold. Glue on to the top half of 12x18 green construction paper. Copy coins on yellow (for gold) and gray (for silver) construction paper. Solving and Writing the Problem Give students the Leprechaun Pot of Gold worksheet (slides #23-24) or a blank template (slides #25-29) to write their own problem. Depending on students ability levels, students can either work with a teacher to write and solve the problems on the Leprechaun Pot of Gold worksheet or they can create their own on the blank templates. After students have written their word problem, they will glue the correct number of gray and yellow coins to illustrate their problem. Glue written math problem to the bottom half of the background paper. Hang word problems next to the leprechaun craft for a darling bulletin board.
