Making the Materials There are four sets of Work Places for Bridges, Grade 1. Each set contains different games and/or activities. While a few of these require nothing more than basic manipulatives, most require cards, gameboards, and/or spinners, along with record sheets. You ll find the Work Place record sheets in the blacklines that accompany the teachers guides. This envelope contains blacklines to make all the other Work Place materials. In addition, you ll find blacklines to make four sets of picture problems story problems in picture form that will be needed in Units 1 4, along with additional materials needed for some of the wholegroup lessons in Units 1 and 5. Here are a few notes to help you get started making these materials. You ll need 1 ream each of heavy-weight white and multi-colored cardstock (250 sheets per ream). Plan to run all gameboards, cards, and spinners on heavy-weight white cardstock. If an activity calls for more than 1 deck of cards, however, run each deck on different colored cardstock. That way children will be less likely to mix the decks, and will be able to sort them more easily if they do become mixed up. a paper cutter narrow and wide water-based, felttip markers in a variety of colors scissors transparent tape wide hanging file folders a box of sandwich-size ziplock bags for storing individual sets of cards 50 regular file folders spinner hardware for approximately 45 spinners (These can be purchased from many teacher supply stores or through The Math Learning Center, Catalog Number SP10.) Note You can make your own spinners with paper clips, brads, small bits of drinking straw, and strapping tape (instructions on page 3). These are much less expensive, but not nearly as sturdy. a laminator and approximately 450 feet of laminating film (Laminate all gameboards, spinners, and cards.) If you don t have access to a laminator, you can cover all materials, both front and back, with clear Contact paper. Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 1

Instructions Work Places, Additional Unit Materials & Picture Problems On pages 6 to 8, you ll find a complete list of all the Work Places and Picture Problems. This list indicates whether you need to make cards, gameboards, and/or spinners for each activity. If you do not need to make materials for a particular activity, you won t find an entry beside it. However, in many cases you ll want to set up a file folder anyway because the activity will require blacklines. If you look on page 6, you ll the first Work Place needing any work on your part, Bugs on Board, requires 3 gameboards and 3 sets of cards. You ll find these gameboards and cards here in the blacklines, and after you ve run them on cardstock, you ll cut them apart and laminate them. Although you may choose to color some of the materials before laminating them, we ve tried to keep the amount of required coloring down to an absolute minimum. You ll find a tiny crayon symbol wherever it s absolutely necessary. For example, if you look at Work Place 2H on page 7 (Who Has More Cents?), you ll see it requires 6 spinners. The tiny crayon ( ) means that you ll have to color them, the tiny scissor ( ) means you ll have to cut them apart and the tiny arrow ( ) means that you ll have to attach a spinner to each of them after they ve been colored and laminated. Here are a few other things you need to know before you get started. Game and activity cards are unless otherwise noted. Gameboards are unless otherwise noted. Single spinners are and require you to attach 1 spinner. Double spinners are and require you to attach 2 spinners. There are 26 picture problems. If there is a door that goes along with the problem, cut it out and secure it to the picture with transparent tape. Note You ll probably want to laminate all pictures and doors before you start cutting and taping. Should you color them? It s up to you. It s true they re more attractive when colored, but life is short. Is this something you could get some parent helpers or older children to do for you? 2 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1

Work Places, Additional Unit Materials & Picture Problems Instructions Bugs Picture Problem 1 door picture 8 ladybugs are out for a walk. If 3 fly off how many are left? Storage Suggestions Keeping track of your teachers guides and blacklines is easy compared to the overhead transparencies and Work Place materials. If you can devise a storage system that works for you, you re far less likely to leave your overheads unwashed and lying around, and far more likely to put the gameboards, spinners, and cards away when it s time to move from one set of Work Places to the next. We recommend that you find a long file box or a drawer in a file cabinet that will hold a series of eleven 2 -wide hanging file folders, two for each set of Work Places, one for the additional unit materials, one for your four sets of picture problems, and another for the transparencies. Work Places and picture problems Inside each pair of hanging files, place a series of five or six regular file folders, one for each Work Place in the set. (Because there are Work Places in each set, we recommend that you divide the file folders between two hanging files rather than trying to stuff all of them into one.) You will use these file folders to hold cards, gameboards, spinners, and/or record sheets. Label each file folder with the number, letter, and name of the Work Place using the adhesive-backed labels that have been included in this set of materials. When you re finished, the files inside the hanging folders will look similar to the illustration shown below for the first half of the second set of Work Places. You ll have a total of eight hanging files that look similar to this, a ninth to hold your picture problems, a tenth for the extra materials in Units 1 and 5, and an eleventh for your overhead transparencies. Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 3

Instructions Work Places, Additional Unit Materials & Picture Problems Work Places 2 2D Odd & Even 2A Button Addition 2F Pattern Block 2B Bugs in the Garden Addition 2C Spin & Write You ll get a gold star if you pre-label all your hanging folders and files and set them up in a box or drawer before you start making things. Now you ll have a place to put the materials as you make them! Additional unit materials Place a series of two regular file folders inside the hanging file, one for each Unit requiring additional materials. These file folders will hold the cards. Label each file folder with the Unit and name of the material using the adhesive-backed labels that have been included in this set of materials. Transparencies Overhead transparencies, once you run them, can be stored in file folders by unit and then placed in the last remaining 2 -wide hanging file folder. (Be sure to check them over before you file them away some require spinner hardware.) If you re very organized, you might even place each transparency in a protector sleeve and sequence them in a binder by unit. Your transparencies will surely last longer this way. If you use the sleeves, attach the spinners after the transparency is in the sleeve.) Student Work Place folders Finally, it s a good idea to have a box for the children s Work Place folders. If students get used to putting their folders away in this box, they re all there 4 Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1

Work Places, Additional Unit Materials & Picture Problems Instructions for you in a convenient package when you want to pass them out the next day, or when you want to look through them to check children s progress or record sheets. You ll also want to set up a box for students Work Sample files. These are file folders in which you can put their assessments and work samples as the year progresses. Keeping these files organized and up-to-date will make conferencing and marking report cards a little easier. Instructions for Making Paper Clip Spinners You ll need a copy of the spinner or gameboard run on heavy cardstock and laminated a brass paper fastener ( brad ) strapping tape a 1 4 section of drinking straw (Cut a narrow straw into sections as shown here. You can probably get about 24 sections out of one small straw.) a regular-sized paper clip Putting it together 1. Using a very sharp pencil or the point of a compass, gently poke a tiny hole through the midpoint of the spinner, which has been marked. 2. Poke a brass fastener through a 1 4 length of drinking straw and a paper clip. Be sure to insert the brad and straw into the large end of the paper clip as shown here: 3. Keeping the straw and the paper clip on the brass fastener, insert it into the midpoint hole of the spinner. Once it has been pushed through to the backside, bend each side of the fastener flat against the underside of the spinner. The section of straw should serve as a spacer so the brad doesn t push the paper clip flat against the spinner and prevent it from spinning. Secure the open brad with a strip or two of strapping tape. 4. Give the paper clip a test spin to see if it works. Once you ve done this a few times, it will go very quickly. less more Bridges in Mathematics, Grade 1 5
