1 Game 2N3: Place value Strand: Number Strand Unit: Place value Curriculum Objectives Covered: Explore, identify and record place value Name: Place Value Relays Aim: To run and place lollipop sticks into Hundreds, Tens and Units hula hoops to show given numbers, and be the fastest team to make it back to its starting position. Activity Area: Hall, yard or open area. Duration: 30 minutes Integration: Physical Education: Athletics: Running Resources: 6 hula hoops 1 set of number cards (photocopiable set attached) 2 sets of Hundreds, Tens and Units cards (photocopiable set attached) 400 lollipop sticks or straws 38 elastic bands 1 large tub/container for lollipop sticks/straws 1 whistle Set Up: 1. Photocopy and cut out attached number cards Photocopy 2 of the attached Hundreds cards, 2 of the attached Tens cards and 2 of the attached Units cards. 3. Make 2 bundles with 100 lollipop sticks/straws in each, using elastic bands to hold them together, and make 18 bundles of 10 lollipop sticks/straws. Show the children that you are putting exactly 100 lollipop sticks/straws into each Hundred bundle, giving each a value of 100, and exactly 10 lollipop sticks/straws into each Ten bundle, giving those bundles a value of 10 each. Explain that the remaining 20 single lollipop sticks/straws each have a value of Put all of the lollipop sticks/straws into the tub. 5. Place the shuffled pile of cards on the floor, face down, beside the tub of lollipop sticks/straws. Copyright Ann Moran
2 6. Split the class into 2 teams and set up the hall as below: Hundreds Tens Units ooo o Hundreds Tens Units ooo xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx Each x represents one child. The hula-hoops are placed in sets of three at the opposite end of the hall to the runners, and represent the hundreds, tens and units columns. The Hundreds, Tens and Units cards are placed above the hoops, to show the purpose of those hoops in Place Value. The tub of lollipop sticks/straws and the pile of number cards are put where all runners can reach them. The teacher stands behind the hula hoops to monitor the play. Start Playing: 1. When the teacher blows the starting whistle, the first runner from each team runs to the pile of cards and takes the top card. He/She must hold the card above his/her head and call out the number to his/her team e.g. The number on my card is The runner, in this example, would take 1 bundle of one hundred lollipop sticks/straws and put it into the Hundreds hoop, to show that there is 1 Hundred in the number. He/She would take 2 bundles of ten lollipop sticks/straws and put them into the Tens hoop, to show that there are 2 tens in the number, and finally the runner would put 4 single lollipop sticks/straws into the Units hoop to show that there are 4 units/ones. 3. As soon as the teacher verifies that the runner has correctly shown the place values of the number on his/her card, the runner gives the card to the teacher and runs back to tag the next player on his/her team, so that he/she can start to run. 4. The next runner then takes a card, calls out the number and changes the lollipop sticks/straws in the hula hoops to show the new number. The play continues in this manner. 5. A player cannot leave the hula hoop area until he/she has correctly demonstrated the number on his/her card, to the satisfaction of the teacher. 6.
