1 SUBTRACTION 5.NBT.7 SUBTRACTION OF DECIMALS: DIFFERENT NUMBERS OF DECIMAL PLACES Purpose: To subtract decimals having different numbers of decimal places Materials:, Blank for Subtracting s (attached), Place Value Tables for Subtraction (attached), Hundredths Number Line (attached), and markers TEACHER MODELING/STUDENT COMMUNICATION Activity 1 Blank Subtract s Activity 2 Place Value Tables for Subtraction Subtracting s with 1. Select a red square and a green square, compare the difference in their shaded amounts, and write an equation for the difference of their decimals. Ask for volunteers to describe their squares, give the difference of the decimals, and explain their reasoning. Discuss how the red square can be replaced by a green square having the same shaded amount so that the difference in shaded amounts can be determined for shaded parts having the same size, that is, for two decimals having the same number of decimal places. The following equations show the decimals for the two squares, the replacement decimal, and the difference:.6.25 = =.5 Repeat this activity for other squares. 2. Distribute Blank for Subtracting s. Shade the top two squares in the first column for.7 and.47, shade the bottom square for the difference of the two decimals, and write a subtraction equation to show the results. Repeat this activity for the decimals,.4. in column #2 and.56. in column #. Place Value Tables and Regrouping 1. Select a red Square and a green Square and write their decimals in a place value table with the larger decimal on top. What can be done to change the one-place decimal to a twoplace decimal and why can this be done? (Place a zero in the hundredths place. In the example shown here, this can be done because 7 parts out of 10 equals 70 parts out of 100.) Once both decimals have the same number of decimal places the difference can be computed just as in subtracting whole numbers. 2. Students can repeat this activity as needed with a red square and a green square. Once students are familiar with the use of place value tables, the decimals can be written in the standard form for subtracting.

2 Activity Summarizing to See Patterns and Relationships Write an explanation of how to subtract two decimals. (Place the numbers under each other, lining up the decimal points. Place zeros at the end of one decimal, if necessary, so both decimals have the same number of places. Then subtract as if subtracting whole numbers and place the decimal in the difference directly below the two decimal points.) Activity 4 Number Lines for Hundredths markers Differences of s on Number Lines Distribute copies of the Hundredths Number Lines and. 1. Using just the red (tenths) and green (hundredths), select any two and place markers on the number line for each square's decimal. Then determine the difference between the two decimals by either counting up from the smaller decimal to the larger, or counting down from the larger to the smaller. In this example, squares for.7 and.15 were selected, and the subtraction equation.7.15 =.55 can be written to show the results. 2. Repeat this activity by using the hundredths number line, squares for tenths and hundredths, and writing a subtraction equation for the difference of decimals. Game: Each student places a marker above the.0 point on the hundredths number line, and in turn selects a tenths or hundreds decimal square, and moves toward the 0 point for the shaded amount of the square. The first player to move his/her marker to the 0 point or beyond on the number line wins the game. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE AND ASSESSMENT Worksheets 5.NBT.7 #11 and #12 decimalsquares.com Rope Tug (The player with the greater decimal computes the difference and pulls the rope. Difficulty Level 2 uses Playing Cards with just tenth and hundredths.
